On Christmas Eve, 1971, seventeen-year-old Juliane Koepcke boarded a flight from Lima to Pucallpa with her mother, hoping to reach her father in time for the holiday.

Lightning tore the plane apart in mid-air. Juliane, still strapped to her seat, fell roughly two miles into the Peruvian rainforest below.

She was the only survivor out of ninety-two people on board.

Injured, alone, and living on a small bag of candy, she spent eleven days walking through dense jungle, drawing on survival knowledge her zoologist parents had taught her at their research station years earlier.
