Created by Jesse Negron, HYDE picks up Mr. Hyde’s story, from the Robert Louis Stevenson novella Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and imagines a world where Mr. Hyde has defeated Jekyll. Now unencumbered by interruptions from his alter ego, Hyde can finally freely explore his dark tendencies with uninhibited abandon. The 2- volume graphic novel series finds Mr. Hyde in his new domain, the sewers beneath London, where he experiments on others, using the corrupting serum to create even more “Hydes.” Each volume in the series will contain two chapters with over two hundred pages. Johnny Depp will have input on all aspects of the property and create the character of Hyde. The graphic novel HYDE chapter 1 of 4, which will ship on Halloween this year, is currently available for pre-order at mechanicalcake.com.
Dear gentle reader, it is time that I tell my side of the story.
On Halloween Eve, a relentless melancholy enveloped me, for I realized I was the only
living thing walking amongst the dead. I saw that every grimy corner of the city was filled
with listless, lifeless automatons, and I wondered why do they not all just kill themselves?
What do you want? I want a beautiful dress. Shall we play some bridge? Mother,
can't play bridge, you have no hands. To avert my mind from turning upon itself,
I fashioned a fearsome broom. Keep your trap shut, mousy boy. Back to business.
I'm onto something. Did you think I missed that dog? Yes, I know, I know. I know what you're
saying. You think I'm stupid. No, shush, it's not enough. I'm a little more,
of course, it's dangerous. Stop it! I was struck with a glorious vision,
and the spiders thread into the trench of hell. Contrary to the crass depictions,
I found it to be a magical place, bursting forth with profound beauty. The lower I dared travel,
the more love and sublime it became. I saw the kingdom of plants, wherein the more there was
fornication, copulation, the greater the abundance, variance, and radiance.
I saw the kingdom of you, say, of man, plus he had mother, wherein the more savage and brutal
the survival dance between predator and prey, the more exquisite and genius and noble the creature.
Then I saw the kingdom of man, each revealing a different London. In my left eye, I saw a city
mired in the bleak misery of perpetual cruel stasis. But in my right eye, I saw a city glowing
with the eternal fire of ingenuity, bathing in a light creation. It was then that I knew I was ready
to work.
