O’Connor was born into a circus and vaudeville family and made his first stage appearance at just 13 months old. When he was 11 he landed his first credited film role alongside Bing Crosby and Fred MacMurray in Sing, You Sinners (1938).

Between 1938 and 1939 he made 11 films before he returned to his family vaudeville show.
