Video Summary
AI GeneratedEm demonstrates a relaxed \"scribble sketching\" approach to overcome perfectionism and creative frustration. By embracing a childlike, comic-style aesthetic using colored pencils and pens, Em focuses on intuition and the joy of creation over technical precision, using spontaneous drawings of characters and animals to warm up and reduce stress.
Hello and welcome to another video.
My name is Em and today we're going to be doing some sketching.
I have all my color pencils here and I've got these pens.
So I'm hoping to do a little bit of a comic-y looking situation and maybe we're going to
do some scribble sketching to get started.
Who knows?
Who knows where the day is going to take us?
But it's it's going to be fun.
So know that I have my Faber-Castell.
I have Faber-Castell pencils here, which are great for sketching.
And I have my Holbein color pencils as well, in case I want to do some more like coloring
in layering colors, something like that.
So let's get started on the first thing, which I don't know what it is yet.
So I think what I want to draw first is this wizard.
Is that what I want to draw first?
I don't know.
That's what I'm going to do.
I'm going to like lightly scribble what's happening and then I'm going to take it further.
We'll go from there.
I used a light color to start because I don't particularly want to show it to show very
much underneath.
And this is going to be very loose and fun.
So I want this wizard's hair to be blowing in the wind and I'm just kind of going off
of like doing it quickly.
Sometimes that's like the best result I find trying to make natural marks.
I think I could have the biggest desk in the world and I would still feel like everything
is constantly in the way.
I want him to be holding a skull because I want him to be thinking that he is an intimidating
wizard.
Is it clear that his other arm is under his cape or does it look like he doesn't have
an arm?
I don't know.
I might get rid of that part after, I don't care.
Okay so he needs to be saying something.
Okay and then let's do... let's try and erase this.
Good luck with that.
Blue is so hard to erase and I'm pretty sure, yeah, Prussian blue is the worst, most hard
to erase.
I'm going to draw a close-up of the skull in his hand.
We're going to figure out all the details and everything after.
He's like, you can't really speak to me like that.
I'm a wizard and a poet.
See the skull?
Should I make the skull to have mushrooms coming out of it and be all like of moss?
Yeah, sure.
Okay, what do we say to adding a little color here?
I haven't actually used my color pencils like this in a little while so it should be nice.
Well, nice for me to use them but I might be out of practice using them.
I'm using my favorite sketchbook ever, the Royal Talon sketchbook.
Everybody always asks and I always forget to say what it is.
I guess I would call this like quick sketching.
Actually I just love this color so much I want to put it in... put it in some other
places, you know?
Let's do that and then let's do this color I guess.
So yeah, basically the idea is just to try and quickly do some sketching to get some
fun ideas.
Maybe we'll turn one into a bigger print someday or something like that.
But for right now I'm just really enjoying like a, for lack of a better word, a cartoony
style.
For lack of a better word, a childlike sort of sketching style.
That's what I... that's what I want to say.
I just think it's so fun.
So that's what I've been sort of like exploring recently, just more about I guess me having
a good time and not that I don't always like enjoy doing sketching and stuff but sometimes
I get really like stressed about it and I want to make everything perfect and then recently
I was making some things...
I was caring less about it being perfect on purpose and caring more about just getting
the idea out and how it looks when you do that.
And I actually ended up really really liking that sort of look.
Like when you're a kid, you know, kind of hard to explain like kind of helps you if
you draw like that in a way where you just draw the lines.
Just get the idea out.
It kind of makes it so that you... well for one thing you can get the idea out more solidly
because you don't lose focus on whatever your character or thing that you're doing is.
And for another thing it helps you to... because you don't lose focus you end up being able
to do cool stuff with colors and kind of come to some...
I found that I came to some realizations about some stuff color and shape wise that
I wasn't really thinking about before because I was too distracted by trying to make everything
just so.
And it makes it look funny.
Like I really like funny... drawing funny stuff or things that are funny to me.
So anyways that's kind of where I'm coming from with that.
And yeah it kind of makes it like...
I'm trying to...
I'm trying to... sorry I'm trying to find a way to explain why I find this to be so
beneficial drawing just quickly.
Quick sketching and stuff and like scribble sketching is in that too.
Because it's... it's um... we'll all get there eventually.
By the end of this video you'll probably know.
I'm trying to find the words but it's hard while I'm trying to also like pick colors
and stuff.
Oh whoa what color should his shoes be?
Hoping to come to some realizations.
I don't know what the realizations are yet but I've already had like...
I've already had one.
A realization where I was like oh this is so fun like I should keep doing this and I
ended up getting a lot of good ideas from doing it in this way and so yeah.
So just looking forward to continuing with that really.
But what I'm wondering right now is should I do the black pen?
This kind of seems like something that would be good for the black pen.
It's funny that his hair is just going straight out.
Well that's the way it is.
Sometimes you just have to accept it.
The skull.
What's a skull color?
What's a good skull color?
That's a good skull color.
That is like perfect skull color.
Moss color.
Let's give a little of this too.
It's kind of like if you have the mushrooms on it like you just picked it up off the ground
and then decided that he wanted to be called a poet you know?
Which like suits his character I feel.
As I get looser it's going to be easier for me to make decisions just because this is
the first one.
I'm just getting warmed up here really.
So we'll do that.
And where is our moss color?
A little moss on there.
Yeah you definitely just pick that up off the ground.
He did not obtain that skull through any sort of intimidating actions or anything like that
if you get my meaning.
I think he has a pretty cool robe.
But like his robe is like new you know?
So he's not really been using it very much.
He just got it so it's a little too shiny.
A little too new looking.
The practice- the more practiced wizards sort of have a little bit of a tatter.
Sheens come off of it.
Okay well I don't like that one darker spot.
I shouldn't have done that.
Whoops.
I have found this prismacolor neon yellow and I've just been absolutely obsessed with it.
I love it.
Well yeah I'm going to put the- I'm chill.
I am going to use the pens.
I guess I'll try this one.
Tiny tiny alert tiny alert.
Too big pen.
That could have gone better.
It's okay we can still see them.
It's so fun just to like let go.
That's what I've really been trying to do.
Life is too short to be freaking out as much as I do.
Also I'm getting my wisdom teeth out next week and I was like you know what?
Do all four.
Go for it.
They were like okay.
I mean I definitely don't want to you know do that experience twice.
But now I'm getting kind of worried about like the pain and stuff now that it's coming
up soon.
Well not much to be done about that I suppose.
Just gotta go and do it.
And I'll be happy when it's done.
Get it over with right?
Okay I am worried about doing the tiny features of the wizard's face with that.
So I'm going to use this Micron pen which is always tricky to use on top of- it's always
tricky to use on top of colored pencil but there's not really- it's the tiniest one I
have for how stable my hand is right now.
It's actually a great pen.
I can do the other lines with the other one though.
And I'll do the little hand and stuff with the other one too.
This one's actually like a bit too thick I don't know.
Actually it's not.
It's just that I have to get used to it because warming your hand up to colored pencils and
warming your hand up to pens is different so I should probably do a little bit more
with it and then I'm sure by the end I'll be used to it.
I'm trying not to touch this.
Is this dry?
I don't know.
I guess just what I realize is that when I look at people's art like what I really like
about it is that it's- you can tell that they're just letting the sort of intuition kind of
take them where they need to go.
Well I hate the dotted lines.
I kind of hate that I put a line in there at all but not much can be done about that
now.
Anyways, people who just let it go more they tend to- the art that they make just looks
really natural and really good to me.
Like I can tell.
I can tell that they've let it go.
And I wish that I could have that too, you know?
I'm just going to do a bit of shadow.
Another thing I love about comic-y looking stuff is that black shadow, dark shadow.
This is the worst pen to be using for this, as I just said.
Should have listened to myself a little more there.
Okay.
I'll do that.
Tiny bit around the nose and I'm not going to test it with the eyes I don't think.
None of this matters.
I guess I'll do the inside of the eyes or the skull too, why not?
Okay.
I think that's fun.
I remember why I rarely use this one.
It's because it's so thick.
It is kind of thick.
And it's hard to make it thin so I think I'm just going to switch to my other pen.
Oops.
Okay, for the next one I want to do orange and I want to do scribble sketch.
Let's just see where this goes.
I don't even- I don't even know, you know?
Sometimes I don't even know.
Okay.
There's that.
I'll use this nice brownish color.
It's such a nice day outside today.
So I think I'll draw a little- I'm not sure yet.
I don't know why I keep talking when I don't know what's happening.
Like a little gnome-y sitting in the sun but it could also be the little chef making another
paint.
I'm not sure yet.
Usually I don't erase when I do scribble sketching but I'm feeling very pressured right now actually
if I'm honest.
And so this pressure is completely manufactured by my own brain as always.
Does that make more sense?
I don't know.
There.
Okay.
Now maybe you'll be able to see a little bit better.
Oh, let's put some grass.
I'm going to get some grass around here.
That's obvious enough to me.
Something about the hair is a little off to me.
It's a little off.
I don't know.
Not close enough to the face perhaps.
And you know what?
I think I kind of want to do a little bit of a lighter blue on here just to fill in
in between where the scribbles are.
I feel like I just made it look like a muddy little thing but- muddy little dress.
It's okay.
Okay, let's- sorry.
That's why it looks like that.
Totally forgot to put the grass in where it's all supposed to be.
I have like such a problem with like filling in a bunch of color at once.
I just- there's something where I'm like I want to just do the sketching.
There's something in my brain where I'm like I really don't want to do that thing
and then it's super hard to make my brain do it after that.
I think it's going to look cute though.
Let's put a tiny bit of this in and a little bit of the neon yellow into the grass there.
So yeah, just know that I'm still warming up, okay?
I like doing patches of grass in sort of a lumpy way or I don't know.
What do you call that?
Not like blades of grass really.
Oh shoot, I wanted to do a little mushroom.
I was going to save it.
Okay, we'll do some little mushrooms and a big one right here.
What's the bottom of a mushroom going to be?
I don't have anywhere to put my hand like on the edge and it's not touching the paper.
That's a problem.
That's a problem for me.
I just have a hard time keeping it steady that way.
Awesome, love that.
Let's see.
That's exactly what happens.
I'm trying to do some little puffs in the dress to show kind of what's going on there.
Okay, that's that.
I'm going to take this purple color and I'm just going to put it in here a bit more.
I think I have too many colors.
I think I got to work with a little less maybe.
Maybe chill out a bit.
Okay, whatever.
Doesn't matter.
Just a little sketch.
Okay, so I think I'm good on the scribble sketching for now.
I think I want to try one where I'm just like trying to draw.
And I'm going to draw a little frog.
Yeah, so I think I'm just going to draw this little frog here sitting on, uh, what's it called?
Well, you know, a toadstool.
And I guess he can be looking up.
The legs are funny, I like that.
I was at a point where I was really able to do it well a week or two ago and then somehow
lost it.
I don't know what happened there.
I'm trying to get it back where I was able to just start going.
Must have been really well warmed up and stuff there.
But that's okay.
You can always get it back.
Aww.
Can you see that?
Shadow here.
Okay, that's it.
That's it for that.
Like I don't really want to spend a long time doing them.
It's really just about getting some funny ideas and getting like warmed up and stuff.
Um, mustache and beard?
Well, of course.
Let's do some arms like this.
And some legs like this.
I don't know.
I like this.
I like how this guy looks, so I'm gonna maybe add a little bit of color.
Okay, I like this funny guy.
I should probably stop putting the same colors all around, but it's okay I think.
I mean, of course it's okay.
It doesn't matter.
Oh, I like this blue for hair too.
Should I put pen on this?
I'm not sure.
Maybe I'll put this color also in the clothes because I feel like they're just a bit too
bright.
I'd like to mute it down a bit, I guess.
This color usually goes nice with greens.
Let's see.
I don't really have much to say today.
Aww.
Yeah, this is why I never really know about the pens.
Maybe I'm just not, I don't use them as much, but I sometimes don't know that they're really
bringing too much to the table for things like this.
Is it better if I just use a darker pencil?
I don't know.
But it does give a comic book-y look, and I like that.
You know what they look really good with?
Markers.
I can't wait to do another marker sketching video.
Okay, I really like this little guy.
See those shadows on his legs, I guess?
This pen's really good for going over the, um, for going over the color pencil, actually.
Alright.
And there we go.
That's it for that guy.
I don't want to spend much time on each one.
I think I already said that, so I'm just kind of doing whatever.
I need to loosen up.
I am having, like, such a difficult time chilling out, and it really frustrates me.
Just let the lines go where they want to go.
It's not a big deal.
Trying to make a bunny.
Bunny!
I love bunnies so much.
I think they're, like, the cutest animal.
And they're so soft.
Let's make a bunch of tiny bunnies beside.
I don't know why I did the legs like that.
Cheers.
Dear Jesus Christ.
I like that little guy a lot.
I like how that turned out.
These tiny bunnies are calming me.
Let's do one more here, maybe?
I'm gonna make these little bunnies, like, stars or something.
I'm gonna try and take this pen and hopefully be able to outline the bunny.
It's not really the big bunny.
It's the little ones that are so tiny.
But this is pretty tiny.
This pen can get pretty tiny, so maybe it'll be okay.
Okay.
I don't even know what this is.
Now I would like to do a bird.
I guess a really round one.
That seems to be where it's going.
Oh, yeah.
I want this bird to have very large eyes.
What's your favorite bird?
I really like those.
I like robins.
I love seeing a robin.
If you see a robin out in the wild, that's probably a good sign.
That's what I think.
There's lots of robins around where I live.
And I know in England they have ones that are so cute.
They're like puffy.
Okay, so it's gonna have a mustache, I guess.
So pigeons are great.
So let's do a pigeon.
Pigeon with a mustache.
Disguise.
Where should the legs be?
What's a funny position for the legs?
I guess that's just how it is.
Gotta let it be the way it is, right?
Okay.
Pigeons have this.
I always love the way that they have this.
They're actually quite pretty.
They have grey and then green.
No one really appreciates them very much.
We'll do green there.
And what can I do?
Oh.
We'll do like this blue.
What's it called?
Smoke blue.
I knew it was called something like that.
But yeah, they have like a holographic-y kind of thing happening around their chest.
And it's so pretty.
And they're smart.
I love a carrier pigeon.
I would love one.
Put your phone away.
Use a pigeon.
That was so stupid.
Go analog.
Use a pigeon.
Sorry.
Okay.
What do pigeons' eyeballs look like?
I don't know, but something's telling me to do this.
Yeah, it doesn't really feel correct, but that's what I'm gonna do.
I guess we'll put a layer on the mustache like that.
Darker color for the mustache.
And so, yeah.
I guess what I have to say about pigeons is that they're always misunderstood.
I hear a lot of people hating on them a lot.
And they're just living their best life.
They were brought, you know, into these kind of city situations via becoming carrier pigeons.
Okay?
Doing work for us.
So, I'd say it's okay for them to be walking around and taking bites of hot dogs and stuff.
It's not their fault.
So, I'll go like this.
And, hmm.
Thing is, if the mustache is right here, I'm like, do I want to put a little mouth on right here?
Because that kind of ruins the whole mustache thing.
Because it's supposed to be like under a nose, isn't it?
I kind of want that to...
If I kind of identify a mouth there, it's gonna ruin the effect I feel.
So, I'm just gonna leave it.
Okay, well, the pigeon has made me feel a lot better.
Looking in the viewfinder, I'm like, it doesn't look like much, but it's made me feel better.
So, let's just keep going with that.
I'll take a bit of this dark green, actually, and put it in here, too.
Just to darken it around a little bit.
They have it a bit on the top, too, right?
I think so.
Whatever.
See what happens if I have to put my hand on the desk?
It gets so shaky.
I'm not gonna do the ink yet, because I'm not sure yet.
I don't know if I want to.
Something is making me want to kind of do this, though.
That's the tough part about doing the scribble sketching, is that
if you want to go further with it...
Like, today, it's hard for me to start without using it.
I've now become reliant on it.
But...
It's hard to go on top of it, because it ends up...
I don't know.
Being muddy.
Okay, there we go.
There's a specific color I'm looking for.
I know what's in here.
I think it's this.
I would like to draw a caterpillar.
I want to draw, like, a big creepy one.
I've been into drawing caterpillars recently.
Not sure really why.
Just felt like it.
They always creep me out, but they are kind of cute.
I don't know.
I'm undecided right now.
I don't like the lumpiness of them.
And squishiness.
Yeah, it's the squishiness
and the way that they kind of
compress to move sometimes.
Let's do a warmer green, maybe?
Feeling a bit better now.
Feeling like looser.
Like I might be ready
to do some other stuff too now.
So that's good.
Worked.
So, got these like
creepy little legs at the start there.
I've been looking at them a lot
because I
was trying to draw one
the other day for something
else, and
the one I was looking at anyways
had these little legs at the top
and then they have sort of
rounder little legs
more at the bottom that are pretty much
covered by the body.
Always kind of remind me of Nausicaa.
And they have cool patterns on them too
so let's try to do some of the pattern.
Just trying to remember here
from the one that I saw, it was green
and had
black kind of
striped things
on top.
I mean I'm not trying to draw like a real one from memory
but I'm just, you know, I want to make it
sort of accurate to what a real one would look like.
This is just a cartoon one
let's say.
So then it had some stuff like that
and it had like some orange bits on it
too. Orange
things.
Antennas
I guess.
Scribble, let's just keep it scribbly.
I don't even know if
it's doing much for us to
you know, veer away too far
from the scribble so let's just do one that's scribbly.
I think I
wouldn't mind a bit of yellow down here.
Oh, this yellow I always forget
it mixes with blue colors and makes
like a neon green which
isn't really what I was looking for so let's
switch it up a bit.
We'll go with this, whatever.
And then this on top.
Full scribble sketch for this one.
Uh
what should I do for this
part? I don't know.
If I see them in public I guess I would
say I do get really creeped out by them.
I just don't want
to see anything
squish and move like that. I do not like that
look. It scares me.
Same snakes, anything slithery
or even remotely
slithery creeps me out.
That's not to say I don't respect
them as a creature of the earth
you know. I just think that they're
creepy and I
am kind of scared. I get kind of like
I don't know, a weird feeling when I see them.
Okay. Well I like the blend
of colors. I don't know why my
book is squeaking so much.
Okay. Okay, that's actually
fun. I like the colors. I haven't been able
to get the colors. Maybe it
was just the adding the yellow I have been
neglecting or not
doing. That was kind of
makes, it really adds something
to add that yellow at the bottom. Makes it look
very caterpillar-y.
I have space for one more thing here
and then we will
be done this whole page. Oh
you know what I have had in my mind
for a little while. What can I do it with?
Can I do it with this? This is stupid
terracotta. Was it sanguine or terracotta?
I suppose this will work.
Anyways, as I was saying
this one is going to be hard because I
am sort of
my hand is touching the desk.
I think we know that that's a problem.
What I have been wanting to draw very badly is
a like
rat or mouse.
Really wanted to
draw a like mouse or
I don't know if this is a mouse or rat yet.
Smoking a cigar.
Not sure how I want this.
Where should the eye go?
Somewhere like here.
We will do the tail in a sec. We don't need to
worry too much about the tail right now.
Yeah I guess
messy is a good word. I like making them
messy looking.
I know it's not everybody's
thing but I just
that's what I like doing sometimes.
Sometimes I like making them look not messy at all.
I enjoy looking at
sort of more abstract
or kind of
I don't know it's just like fun when it's
loose like that.
When I see other people's art that's like that
there's like a
joy in it. You can see it.
Should we go for it with
the... yeah why not.
There we go.
That's a rat.
That's gotta be a rat right?
Which ones have bigger ears? Mice have bigger ears.
But rats have
the long nose I think.
Okay.
Oh so actually it doesn't matter at all.
So chill out. Okay so that's
that.
I just last minute decided that I do
want to use a black pen.
I just feel like it's not showing
as much as I'd like it to.
You know like the
I think this one would be good for the comic book
kind of look that I was
talking about at the start that I was kind of
wanting to try out. So I did a
couple like that and a couple
I have no clue what's happening.
Like the bunny.
But it's just another way of
how I kind of loosen up and do warm up
sketches and try to get
ideas I guess. It's just
fun. Alright.
I was thinking about doing the caterpillar
in the pen but I'm not sure.
I think it's fine.
I don't. It's cause I've done it
before where I've tried to do something like this
just on my own and when I put the
pen it didn't really work out very well.
And I think it's fine as like
a scribbly guy now
so don't really want to mess with that.
I also just wanted to
take a moment to show this a little closer
cause I do. I quite enjoy.
I quite enjoy that. That's the kind of thing
I'm looking for right there.
Okay so here's our sketch page
for the day.
The wizard. Okay I loved the
I like the comic-y
nature of it I guess.
Little girl
sitting in a field
of mushrooms. I like that.
I really like this little guy
and
this guy is probably my most favorite.
I love the blue beard and I like how the black
lines turned out so that's good.
And this funny pigeon
and then some kind of
sketchy stuff at the bottom. I think
that's pretty funny too actually.
So yeah that's just I guess like a
variety of sketches. I'm like struggling to
think about how I'm even going to call this video
cause it's just I just
did whatever came to mind. Anyways I hope
you enjoyed it and I hope you
had fun and got
something out of it and I guess I'll see you next week.
Okay bye!
