Video Summary
AI GeneratedCorey Day secured a $25,000 victory at the Lernerville Speedway Silver Cup, charging from 6th to 1st. After Rico Abreu led for much of the event and a late-race accident sidelined contender Aaron Reitzel, Day utilized the high side of the track to overtake Abreu on the penultimate lap to claim the win.
3 Kilavier and Tanner Holmes in row 1.
Run over 2, Giamatti Celsi and Aaron Reitzel.
Row 3, Jeremy Weaver and Corey Day.
4th row of Tyler Courtney and Anthony Macri.
5th row is Ricky Peterson and Justin Peck.
Row 6, Brock Zierfoss and Brenham Crouch.
Run over 7, Kerry Mattson and Jacob Degenwald.
Row 8, Dason Pursley and A.J. Flick.
Row 9, that is going to be
Logan Wagner and Gage Polkerbeck.
Row 10, Ryan Newton and Tanner Thorson.
Then from the B main, Brent Marks
and James McFadden, Brandon Spithaller
and Cy Lynch, and then utilizing provisionals
Chase Randall and Danny Sams
back in row number 13.
Going green this time.
Lernerville Speedway.
We got them wrecked.
We got them stacked.
And we've got the grandstands packed.
Let's go racing up in turn number 4.
We are brief.
Underway in the silver cup.
Rico Eber jumps out with the early race lead.
Big runner on the outside for Tanner Holmes.
Not able to do anything with it there.
As Rico is going to show the way into turn number 3.
He runs the middle as Holmes plugs the right rear
to the cushion. Their nose to tail coming across
the start finish line. Behind them,
Giovanni Selzy gets the best of a battle between himself
and Aaron Reitzel. Now Reitzel challenged down low
by Corey Day. Corey Day's
going to take 4th away, but Reitzel around the outside
is going to have the momentum. And now he comes after Selzy
to turn 3 and 4. Aaron Reitzel now
back to 4th and now coming after Selzy for the 3rd spot.
They go side by side for that spot into turn
number 1. Aaron Reitzel takes 3rd away
from Selzy. Now Reitzel to the middle.
Selzy gets the grip off the bottom. He'll take that spot
back away down the back stretch. Now they swap
lines in 3 and 4. Reitzel with a slide
job attempt at turn number 4. Comes up short
and Selzy hangs on to 3rd.
Now Gio goes down low. Reitzel to the top.
A cat and mouse game back there for that 3rd
position. Give it to Giovanni Selzy
in the Chili's number 77. Now Reitzel
down to the inside. Slide job coming.
Selzy around the outside still has the 3rd spot.
Giovanni Selzy
and Aaron Reitzel both closing in on Tanner
Holmes in that 2nd spot. Holmes is
down low. Selzy's on the top. Corey Day
trying to put a bit in for that 4th spot. He's all over
Aaron Reitzel down the back stretch as here comes
Gio. Make that Corey Day down low
excuse me. Going for 4th.
5 laps down in this
35 lap race
as Rico Ebru approaches
the back of the field. Catching up
to Danny Sams and Logan Wagner.
Rico's going to have to make
some decisions on his line because his
preferred crew on the bottom is
covered in lap cars.
He'll go to the outside of Danny Sams down the back
stretch and try to put that lap car away.
Tanner Holmes sitting in 2nd. 3rd
spot still up for grabs. It's Gio down low
and Reitzel on the top. Reitzel gets a good
run down the front straightaway but not able to get by Gio
quite yet. Reitzel's car appears to be
very good on the top side of the racetrack on both ends
of the speedway as he pulls up next to Gio
down the back straightaway.
Race for 3rd is side by side. Reitzel might have
it this time by off a turn number 4
and he does at the start finish line. Aaron Reitzel
takes 3rd away from Gio.
Reitzel to 3rd and all of a sudden on the back
bumper of Tanner Holmes down the back stretch.
Rico's gotten by a couple of slower cars, that being
the 55 of Logan Wagner
and the 2 of A.J. Flick.
He's got cars side by side in front of him
now as he tries to get banana splitting between
Jacob Begginwald and Ryan Newton.
Rico goes by the 3J of
Begginwald. Tanner Holmes has
separated himself from the 87 of
Aaron Reitzel.
As Holmes now has to check up there as Begginwald got over
the cushion right in front of him. That's going to allow Aaron
Reitzel to close back in.
Corey Day working on Giovanni
Selzy. He goes down low now to the cushion
in turn number 2 as Corey
sits in 4th and 5th is now Anthony McAree.
Excuse me, McAree in the
6th spot closing in on Corey for the
P5 position and now McAree
challenged out back by the 7VC of Tyler
Courtney. Tyler Courtney right there
with McAree. Now Courtney challenged down
low by Justin Peck. Peck goes by the
7VC, moved Justin Peck up to 7th.
Justin Peck, the Durst Ice
rolling driver up to 7th and now closing
in on Anthony McAree for 6th.
Rico Avery trying to fight
through a couple of slower cars. Just got cut off on the
backstretch there by Brandon Spithaller.
Car around in turn 4, yellow comes out for
Daston Pursley.
Yellow flag waving for
the number 9 car, Daston
Pursley, who was running 18th
at the time with
12 laps completed of this 35 lap
feature event. Here's a look at the replay on
the drone. Bottom right of your screen,
Pursley comes off in turn 4,
just loses the handle on the Napa 9
and spins it down into the infield.
And so the most recent
winner with High Limit here at Lernerville
draws the caution.
But if Tanner Holmes can stay aggressive here
on the start, at least he showed us on the
initial start, he was able
to keep Abreu within shouting distance.
It'll be interesting to see
if he can make anything
happen and capitalize on that
quick fire off speed that he showed
on the initial start. Yeah, he did look good
at the beginning as the Chasm Safety Brocs
choose cones out on the track. Drivers
going inside or outside to determine which lane
they will start in for this upcoming double-file restart.
Coming to the green
this time by. 12 laps down
and 23 to go.
Green flag waves once again.
Rico gets a good launch
off the inside and drives down into turn 1
with the race lead. Tanner Holmes
tries the middle in 1 and 2, trying to build momentum
and catch back up to the car quest
number 24. Aaron Reitzel in third,
fourth is Selzy and now fifth is Anthony
Macri. He got behind the 14 of Corey Day
on the restart. Anthony Macri now up to
fifth. Problem for
Cy Lynch farther back in the field. Lynch has got tagged
from behind and then he fell back about
8 or so spots and so
Lynch is going to give him a lot of ground to gain
early on in this one.
Macri now coming out to the 77 of Giovanni
Selzy racing for the fourth position.
The two-time Kings Royal Champion
is trying to challenge for a podium
spot here tonight. Gets passed on the inside by
Corey Day, now Macri is back to the
sixth spot. Aaron Reitzel
appears to be coming to life. Now on
the tail section of the 13 of Tanner
Holmes. Holmes goes down low, Reitzel
on the top. They're separated by one car length
down the back straightaway.
Rico Avery closing in on the tail end of the field
once again. Reitzel down low, going to try and take
second away. He will do so across the start-finish line.
Aaron Reitzel takes second away from Tanner
Holmes. Holmes back to the inside
in turn 1, tries to circle the bottom, but
Reitzel pulls away by four car lengths down the
back stretch.
Aaron Reitzel now zeroing in on
Rico Avery, the only car left to encounter
for the $25,000 victory here tonight.
Rico runs the car
through the middle, Reitzel around the top. He
does appear to be closing in, and now Rico's got
traffic to deal with.
Cars have pulled off the racetrack yet, so all
26 are still out there. That is going to
affect Rico Avery.
Avery to the middle, trying to get around the
outside of A.J. Flick. Cannot do so
there in turn number 2. Last time
by in the top two, separated by 1.1
second. Aaron Reitzel took two tenths out
of Rico Avery's lead the last time by.
Rico this time runs a 15.26
and a 15.26 as well
for Reitzel, so nearly identical lap times
for your top two drivers.
This time by, going to be 15
laps to go in the 35th
running of the Silver Cup, and Aaron
Reitzel is closing in on Rico Avery.
Race for third, getting good as well.
Corey Day all over Tanner Holmes
in a turn 1. Tanner Holmes goes down
low. Corey Day almost over the banking
there. Holds on to the race car and maintains the
fourth spot. Now Rico
trying to get through some of the slower cars. Ran the middle
of the racetrack there and pulled away from Reitzel by
six tenths of a second. A good
lap there for Rico to put distance between himself
and the Richardson's racing number 87.
Rico closing in on
Danny Sams and Logan Lagger. Those two cars
ahead of him get very close. Now Rico's over the cushion.
Rico hopped the cushion and turned forward.
Here comes Aaron Reitzel down the front straightaway.
Rico goes down low. Aaron Reitzel to the
top of the racetrack. The top two in series point
standings. Going at it for a $25,000
paycheck. Reitzel to the
inside. Going to be side by side. Potentially
off a turn number 4 for the race lead. Here
comes Aaron Reitzel. Rico leads the lap.
12 laps to go at the
Silver Cup, and Rico's trying to float
the middle. Avery
through the middle. Pulls away from Reitzel once again.
And Corey Day's trying to get on the front as
well. Payday from out of nowhere is right
there with Aaron Reitzel off a turn number 4.
Corey Day to the inside of Reitzel
for a second. He'll try and make the move
to the inside and turn around. Now Reitzel's over the cushion.
Corey Day goes by for a second.
Into P2.
He was 1.2 seconds behind the
24 of Avery though. This time by
10 laps to go for Rico Avery.
Corey Day now.
Oh, caution. Reitzel with a problem.
Aaron Reitzel with a
problem in turn number 4. Sounds like he
hopped the cushion maybe off the wall.
Chase, that's exactly
what happened. Looked up as Reitzel
slid up over the cushion
through the middle of 4. The car
bunny hopped on him and just had
simply no time and nowhere to go
as he nosed into where he's
parked on the wall. Here's Comp Cam's replay
for folks back home watching on Flow.
He had just hopped the cushion in 1 and 2
right before this and
hits it again. We saw Rico do that a lap or two
ago and barely gets
in that wall but was up on the bike there
and a mistake
we do not see very often from Aaron Reitzel.
That is going to take him
out of the third position.
Well past the halfway point
so any guaranteed time in the work
area is foregone and
any guaranteed time these teams would have
anyway is simply to
replace a flat tire
and there's a lot more than that to do
here for that second place championship
driver, Aaron Reitzel. They'll go to work
on swapping out this front end but they're not
going to have enough time down here. Yeah, we're going green this
time by. Single file start coming up.
It's Abreu followed by Day, Holmes,
Macri and Peck. McFadden
is 22nd to 9th right now in the
21. Green flag
back in the air for the final 10
laps of the Silver Cup.
Rico Abreu with Corey Day
now hot on his heels into turn 1.
Abreu runs the bottom, slips it up off
the inside of the racetrack and turnover June pulls
away from Corey Day down the back straightaway.
Day now in
his happy place right up alongside the
cushion here at the Lernerville Speedway.
Two distinct lines
between your top two drivers.
Day up on the top
side. Separated by 8 car lengths.
There's going to be 8 laps to go this time
by and Corey Day is absolutely
in full sin known in turns 3 and 4.
The cushion a lot
thinner down there in 1 and 2. Cannot be
quite as aggressive but you can really
really pound it down here in 3 and 4.
Rico continues to circle
right through the middle portion of the racetrack.
We'll check the lap times. A 14.7
for both drivers at the front of the field.
Corey Day not able to close in.
They may get to the back of the
field by the end of this thing. This time by
and there will be 6 laps to go for
Rico Abreu.
Corey Day certainly closed the gap. Just took
4 tenths out of Rico's lead that time by.
Day up on the top.
Closing in on Rico Abreu down the
back straightaway.
Traffic going to be the deciding factor in this one.
Rico through the middle. Corey Day around the outside.
Their nose to tail down the front straightaway at Lernerville.
Corey Day once
again back to the top of the racetrack. Now
turns it down the hill off of turn number 2.
This time by there will be 4 laps to go.
Lap traffic now
in the mix as Rico gets tight on the cushion
right there in turn 4. Corey Day in his back
pocket down the front straightaway.
Corey Day once again to the top. This may
be the opening he needs. Rico stuck behind
a slower car. Rico not able
to get by the 24D of Danny Sams.
Rico through the middle.
Does not like the cushion in
turn number 4. Corey Day not able
to get by him. All the lap cars are down the inside.
Rico through
the middle once again. Corey Day
just one car length behind for the race
lead. This time going to be
2 laps to go between Rico Abreu
and Corey Day.
Corey Day absolutely locked
in on the top side of the racetrack in turn 4.
But Rico's car gets
to the middle very nice that time. It does it around the outside.
Corey Day going to take the lead down the back
straightaway. Coming this time
by. Corey Day to the race lead
of Lernerville Speedway.
One lap to go. Can Rico pull off
another crazy one here in this one?
Now look to the inside of Corey Day in turn 1.
Day around the outside to get by the slower car.
Checkered flag this time by.
Into 3 and 4 for the final time.
It's going to be a $25,000
win. Lernerville Speedway.
Rico Abreu second.
Tanner Holmes third. Anthony Macri fourth.
And Justin Peck in fifth.
Corey Day just picked his pocket
with two laps to go
to get the $25,000
Silver Cup win.
Abreu second by two-tenths
of a second. Tanner Holmes third.
Anthony Macri fourth. And Justin Peck in fifth.
Tyler Courtney, Giovanni Selzy,
Carey Mattson, Tanner, make that James McFadden
and Tanner Thorsen the top 10.
Brenham Crouch, Brock Zierfoss,
Jason Pursley, Brent Marks,
Ricky Peterson, Chase Randall,
Si Lynch, Jeremy Weaver, Brandon Smitthaler,
and Gage Polkerbeck.
A $25,000
check.
Not a bad payday.
As he climbs up top,
your winner here tonight, all the way
up top, Corey
Day.
Top wing.
And he is going to climb
around the front of the race car
and talk to Tony Laporta as a
high-level winner once again. He sure is.
Ladies and gentlemen, he can hear you. That's your winner,
Corey Day.
All right, I want to give you this because
I've been forgetting to hand these out lately. That's your
Chasm Safety Technologies win
sticker. You can put that on the tail tank
or really anywhere you want because with that
drive tonight, you earned the right
to put that sticker wherever you want.
Man, so many things to unpack
about that race. The track.
What was it like? We saw Rico
stumble over the cushion. Aaron Reitzel
stumbled over. I don't know if we ever saw you stumble
over. What was the top
side of this Lernerville Speedway like tonight?
Yeah, it's just really tricky. It's super
thin down there. We're right on the edge and
there's guys running the middle below you the whole time
throwing dirt up to where you can't really see
the edge, so you're just guessing
off the feel of your right rear and it's hard to
make speed that way. So, yeah,
Rico just messed up enough
there. I think in 3 and 4 he got tied
and then he went to the bottom
being defensive in 1 and 2 and left me a lane.
So, yeah, just
if you'd asked me at lap 10, I'd have
told you there's no way we're running
even on the podium, much less winning that thing.
But, you know, I got my wing
back and just calmed down
in the car and tried to
get the most out of it wherever it was good
enough. And, yeah,
we ended up winning somehow.
6th to 1st. You just said something very interesting
that I'd love to know more about.
You said you had to calm yourself down.
35 laps is on the longer
side of features for sprint car racing,
but around a place this fast, it's not exactly
a lot of time. Man, it's a lot
to unpack, but I want to know more about that.
Calming yourself down, what goes into that?
Do you realize at a certain point maybe you're not
driving the car the way you want to? What do
you tell yourself? How do you know you need
to calm yourself down? Yeah,
absolutely. I don't want to give away all my secrets, but
yeah, just you
find yourself running way too much throttle in the middle of
these races and spinning your tires a lot more than
you really need to. And in reality,
if you just took a breath and rolled off the
right pedal and smooth your hands out, you're probably gonna
go faster. It just sometimes
sounds and feels like you're going faster the other way.
So, caught a caution at the right time
to be able to do that. And just hats
off to Shane. I honestly felt
terrible all night long from
qualifying to the dash. I thought
my qualifying laps were gonna be 10th
and they were somehow second.
And then I felt terrible in the feature there until about
lap 15. So, just hats
off to him for working hard on it all night
and getting it right. Thanks to Brody,
Lawton, Jett, my girlfriend
Ashlyn, Jason in Preston at home,
Kenny, just
everyone that supports us.
That one felt really good. I'll be honest with you, I
was surprised when I saw the
Sander Engineering Team Transporter
park in the back 40 of the pits
here at Lernerville. Obviously, we saw
you all four nights at Eldora for the
Joker's Jackpot, the King's Rail weekend,
but was coming here with High Limit always
on the... Was that always on the schedule?
What went into making the decision to
be here tonight? Yeah, I had it on my
schedule. I knew it was probably gonna be
a little dependent on how our Eldora went. If we
had a terrible week, I wasn't gonna
come race around
here and have maybe another
terrible night, but we had a great Eldora.
So, yeah, it was an easy decision to come
do this one. I was not able
to do this one last year, so wanted some
redemption. Yeah, not able to do it. You were
sick. You had to scratch from the event.
And then finally, so many of us in the dirt
track racing world are watching and
loving what you're doing on the pavement in the NASCAR
O'Reilly Auto Parts Series. But I mean,
how much do you miss this, man? You're so,
so talented at it. You seem to have
so much fun. You put your car places so
many others won't. How bad do
you miss this kind of racing weekend,
week out, night in and night out?
Yeah, I miss it for sure. I kind
of left at a point in my career where I
thought the year after would have been a really,
really good year for me. So
it is hard sitting on the couch and watching most
of these races and wondering
what we would be doing if we were running this
deal full time. But
you know, I can't complain
at what I'm able to do. Rick Hendrick
and Jeff Gordon and everyone at Hendrick Motorsports
allows me to come run sprint cars
just as much as I want to or as much
as my schedule allows. And
I'm just glad it's going well for us
this year. You'll always be a high roller. Great
job. Thank you. Ladies and gentlemen, one
more time. Your winner is Corey
Day.
Don
Martin Memorial Silver Cup goes to
the hands of the driver from Clovis
California. He doesn't get to race him
as much as he'd like, Chase. But when he does
man, he puts on a show in a sprint
car. He certainly does, Tony. Thank you
very much. We'll take a look at our contingency award
winners tonight. James McFadden is the rod and
supply hard charger. He went 22nd
to 9th for a plus
13 effort there after
having that big wreck during the heat race.
Our race reading Foundation rookie
of the race, Tanner Holmes in the third
position and the Jake's golf carts
fastest lap on lap 15
a 14.294
second lap time for Rico Abreu
Abreu starts on the pole position, leads
a lot of that race.
I talked to Corey Day about the top side
of this racetrack, and he said it was tricky.
You stumbled a time or two
if there weren't the mistakes on the top.
Do you think you could have held day off?
I mean, if I would have moved
up, probably and got my car to maneuver
better. I just three and four was really
struggling on the top, and I migrated
back down after those few
mistakes from my part.
But other than that, like in traffic, I just
really got up out of the bars and numb and
really wiggly through the corners
and snapping around. So, you
know, that that's his style racetrack right
there to rip the lip. And
I think that when you really look at
our program here and getting it
getting our car to run off of the cushion
you know that those races
you know, you gotta give and take there. So I wasn't
gonna keep making the same mistake over and over.
I feel like over the years, you know,
running for a championship here,
you have to be able to react very
quickly and maneuver, you know, and
get where my car is comfortable for me,
and that was middle of the bottom of the racetrack
for sure. Yeah, points racing and keeping
yourself in the championship point lead,
especially when your nearest rival, Aaron
Reitzel, wrecks out of this one. That's
points racing for you. I'm curious.
Corey catches up to you inside of ten to go.
He gets really, really close with like five or
six to go from inside that Tony Stewart
racing number 24. What can you hear?
How aware are you that someone's
closing in on you? Yeah, I mean, I was just really trying
to focus on where the lap traffic was running,
and if I could run off their right rear
through the center of the corner and knew that
you know the top was gonna come in
as you're racing, you're watching how
clean those lanes get. And, you
know, lap cars are making hay way up
ahead of you, and you're trying to focus
on those maneuvers. So, you
know, anytime that you race
a high limit sprint car race, you have
the best sprint car drivers in the world here,
and they're maneuvering around
and figuring out where their car
is really comfortable. So, you know,
those races, that's what happens
when you start searching or if you don't run a lane
that's faster and you commit to the middle of
the bottom and, you know, you just
run second sometimes. A perfect
breakdown of his night from your defending
series champion and remaining
point leader Rico
Abreu. Love to hear him break
down a night of sprint car racing,
and he has got the
applause of still a lot of fans here hanging
out with us. Tanner Holmes started
second. You finished third. You
had great fire off speed at the very
start of this race.
We're still coming to a lot of places. You're
learning. This team's out of Pennsylvania.
Just how much communication goes
in to another night racing
with high limit. Totally. Yeah. No, I'm
obviously relying on my guys a lot to kind of
give me some pointers at these different places, you know,
that they've been to or they've ran well
at. And, obviously, it helps. I get comfortable
right away. You know, tonight I've only been to learn
about one time before, but felt 10
times better than my last start here. So it was
just nice to have a lot of clean air all night
and then also to be up here with Rico and Corey
and just kind of see how the race kind of
came to be through 35 laps.
Felt like I made some good decisions. And then also there
was times where, you know, you end up in the wrong spot
or you get to lap traffic, and you just
really got to place yourself in the right spot to
win these things. And I feel like we're still learning
how to do that, how to be up front and
really just build consistency. And over the
last month, I feel like these guys have given me a good hot
rod to do so. So it's been fun to drive the boot
car. Yeah, it looked like you really did a good
job of piecing together the night from the start of
the feature here to parking it on the front straightaway
in third position. Another strong result.
Great to see out of you. Yeah, totally. You know,
we have a lot of racing ahead still. So
just taking it night by night. It's nice to be
here on the podium. So just want to give a big shout out
to Tom Boock, my team, Jerry
Pettigrew, a great supporter of us, and
my entire family, my girlfriend. She's
actually probably sitting in an airport somewhere on the way here.
So just shout out to all my friends and family
back home. They obviously root me on, and it's
great to be here. Tanner Holmes started second
ends on the podium with a third
place result here tonight. Remember, Chase,
this car, Boock Motorsports
parked it in Whiskey Myers Victory
Lane at the Lernerville Speedway
just over one year ago.
Personally, of course, was the driver, but
we talked about it when Tanner Holmes won
back in Harlan, Iowa.
You know, you've got a great crew
teaming up on this Boock Motorsports
number 13. Sean Strasbaugh is
a world-class crew chief, and he does
great work with young drivers, and it seems like he's
got a new one every single season.
Tanner Holmes is the current
driver that he's building and grooming to
get to the top level of wing national
sprint car racing. It's a busy,
busy week here for Interstate
Batteries High Limit Racing. Ransomville,
New York, what is it about?
Three and a half, four hours away, we're going to start tearing
down and make our way to New York State.
Absolutely, Tony. That is where
we're at tomorrow on the state line on
Friday. As we see a
race recap here, Rico Avery
led early, he led often, but at
the end, it would not be him
standing in Whiskey Myers' victory lane
as he had to fight through a lot
of lap traffic here in this one. Aaron Wright
still looked like he had a car that could contend
with Rico for the win. He got by Corey Day
earlier, then he would get by Giovanni
Selzy a few laps later, move into the third spot,
and then here in just a few moments, he
also gets by the 13
of Tanner Holmes. Corey Day would start to pick
off cars very slowly, but
surely. He got by Macri there, moved into the top
five. Here's the move from Reitzel
right across the nose on the 13
of Tanner Holmes to take over second
place, and then at around the same time,
Day would get by the 77 of Giovanni Selzy,
and I believe the issue
for Reitzel is coming
up here as Day would then get by the 13
of Tanner Holmes to take over the third spot.
Reitzel makes the mistake there,
and a corner later on
that same lap, he goes into turn
four, hooks the cushion, gets over it.
There's a little pogo stick on the right front there,
comes to a stop, and he would end up in the 23rd
spot, and then Corey Day
would get a huge run around
the outside of Rico Ebru to take the lead
away. You can see his crew guys were
pumped. Jet Barnes up there
as well, the West Coast
driver for Jason Myers Racing
helping out tonight, and there he is on the right
as he came across
the line as a winner once again
with Interstate Batteries Highlander Racing
at the Silver Cup.
