ROME - Borghese Gallery

Nov 4, 2023
The Borghese Gallery is an Italian state museum, located in the Villa Borghese Pinciana in Rome. It still houses a large part of the art collection begun by Scipione Borghese, cardinal nephew of Pope Paul V, who also built the villa itself.
The most important collection of sculptures and paintings in the Borghese Gallery dates back to the collections of Cardinal Scipione (1579-1633), son of Ortensia Borghese, sister of Pope Paul V, and Francesco Caffarelli. However, the events of the following three centuries, including losses and acquisitions, have left significant traces. Cardinal Scipione's attention was focused on all expressions of ancient, Renaissance, and contemporary art, designed to evoke a new golden age. Not particularly interested in medieval art, he instead passionately explored ancient sculpture. However, the cardinal's ambition favored the creation of new sculptures, especially marble groups that could be compared to ancient works.
It displays works by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Agnolo Bronzino, Antonio Canova, Caravaggio, Raphael, Perugino, Lorenzo Lotto, Antonello da Messina, Cranach, Annibale Carracci, Peter Paul Rubens, Bellini, and Titian. It is considered unique in the world for the number and importance of Bernini's sculptures and Caravaggio's canvases.
