
Why Irish Stone Huts Survived 1,400 Years While Modern Homes Crumble in 50
On a bare rock in the Atlantic, monks built houses of stone. Nothing bound them together, not mortar, not cement, not a nail or a beam of wood. They stacked dry stone by hand, eight hundred feet above a sea that throws storms at the cliff for half the year. By every rule we build by today, those huts should have come down inside a single lifetime. They are still standing. Some of them have kept the rain out for more than a thousand years. The house you are sitting in was built to last about fifty. The concrete and steel we pour now is rated for fifty years, maybe a hundred, and in a hard winter, sometimes less than twenty. That leaves a strange question hanging over all our progress.
Today we are going to take one of these huts apart in our heads, stone by stone. Why a building held together by nothing at all outlasts the steel and cement we invented to do it better. How a roof of loose rock keeps Atlantic rain out with no mortar and no gutter. And why the cleverest thing about these huts is not what the monks put in, but what they left out. We will end up on the Dingle Peninsula, at a stone church called the Gallarus Oratory, and out on the island of Skellig Michael. It starts with the ground.
