The military aircraft that crashed near Moscow is likely a Su-57D fighter jet , according to Defense Express .
Analysts based their conclusions on publicly available information. Specifically, Russian media reported that it was a Su-57 fighter jet that crashed. The Russian Ministry of Defense, however, only confirmed the loss of the aircraft, without specifying its type, but noted that it was a combat training aircraft whose pilot ejected.
Against this background, journalists came to the conclusion that this was a Su-57D, a two-seat training version of this fighter. The publication noted that the aircraft first took to the skies just two months ago, on May 19. It likely was still undergoing flight tests. This may be indicated by the location of the accident—not far from the Kubinka Air Base. Although this base is not a test base, Russia occasionally uses it for such purposes.
Furthermore, according to the publication's analysts, the Su-57D could have been performing a demonstration flight for a foreign delegation, as the 237th Aircraft Demonstration Center is located nearby.
Russia's Defense Ministry, through state news agency TASS, said a combat-trainer crashed during takeoff, that the pilot ejected, and that there was no destruction on the ground. Officials did not confirm the aircraft type or the cause. Russia's bloggers went further than the officials. Milblogger Romanov wrote that "a number of questions" should go to the crew of BARS-Moskva, a mobile air-defense group guarding the capital. Another Russian channel, arrowsmap, said the jet's own air-defense crew shot it down and asked whether a shoulder-fired missile had felled a fifth-generation fighter.
Those bloggers also warned that pulling such crews back would leave Moscow's skies open to Ukrainian drones. Ukraine had no role in the loss, and none of the friendly-fire claims carried official confirmation.
Russia has confirmed that the Su-57D is a fifth-generation fighter. If so, the publication notes, it is the only representative of this generation to have a separate combat-training version. After all, the American F-22 and F-35 fighters, for example, do not have a separate two-seat version. Meanwhile, the Chinese Chengdu J-20, a contender for fifth-generation status, is designed for air-to-air combat control in its J-20S version.
"It's worth noting that Algeria was the only foreign buyer of the Su-57, receiving the first of the 14 fighters ordered no later than February 2025. However, the Kremlin continues to try to sell this fighter to India and has offered specifically the two-seat version. There have also been reports of interest from Malaysia," the publication added.
The Su-57 is Russia's most advanced fighter, built by Sukhoi and first flown in 2010. Russia took its first serial jet into service in 2020, in small numbers. The type has a rough record: one of the first serial aircraft crashed in Khabarovsk Krai in December 2019, before the military even received it. Ukrainian drones first damaged two Su-57s at the Akhtubinsk airbase in June 2024. In spring 2026, drones reached more of them at Shagol near the Urals, where Russian unit-cost estimates run to $100–120 million each. Russia has since kept the jet away from missions over Ukraine. More often than not, Russian air defenders are yet another threat to their own pilots.
Russia's air defenses shot down their own Su-27 over occupied Crimea in March 2024, killed a Su-35 pilot with an S-300 over occupied Tokmak in 2023, and opened fire on one of their own helicopters near Moscow in 2025 after mistaking it for a drone.
Poor coordination between Russian aviation and its air-defense crews has cost Moscow its own aircraft again and again. Losing a scarce fifth-generation jet the same way would say more about the air defense meant to shield Moscow than about anything Ukraine did that day.
