On January 20th, a wall of dust lifted off the dry bed of the Great Salt Lake, rolled south across Farmington Bay, and didn’t stop until it had stretched all the way down into Utah County. You can watch the satellite footage. A yellow smear of airborne sediment, drifting straight over two and a half million people. Straight over neighborhoods. Straight over schools. Straight over the house someone signed for last week.

And here’s the part that should make you sit up. That dust isn’t just dirt. Researchers at the University of Utah pulled samples off that exposed lakebed and found arsenic. Lithium. Lead. Levels of arsenic that exceed the EPA’s residential screening limits for the soil under your own feet.
