Self Rescue： The Oberrothorn Traverse

The Oberrothorn Traverse: Three years ago we tried it an failed. Will we make it this time? You may remember that, many years ago, while hiking in Switzerland, we decided to attempt what we thought would be a spectacular ridge scramble below the summit of the beautiful Oberrothorn peak. However, shortly after scrambling our way onto the ridge, we quickly realized that the rock was too loose and the moves too technical to proceed any further without proper trad gear. We vowed to return one day with the proper climbing equipment and summit the high point of the traverse, and have been dreaming of the day we return to Zermatt to attempt redemption. Today is that day. After all the planning and preparation, will we make our years long dream? Or will we fail yet again? As a side note, the hike up to Oberrothorn peak itself is one of the most beautiful hikes in Zermatt and is on our list of our top most beautiful hikes in the world.
