Jessica presents a comprehensive homeschooling haul for her daughter Emily's 9th-grade year. The curriculum blends traditional subjects like biology and world studies with Emily's interests in fantasy, gaming, and puzzles, utilizing a mix of science comics, educational games, and hands-on kits to foster engagement and critical thinking.
Hey everybody, welcome to the Law Dock Way. I'm Jessica and today's video is going to be
our high school homeschool haul. I can't believe I'm having to say high school. If I get it wrong
in the next few videos because we're going to be doing a whole lot of high school stuff,
I apologize in advance. That is very, very weird for me. Okay, this is the majority of what I have
bought for Emily's first high school year, so ninth grade specifically. I will be talking more
about like planning and morning basket and what we're actually going to be doing in future videos.
Today is mainly all of the things that I have purchased for this year or for our homeschool.
So I'm just going to dive in. I might tell you a little bit about some of it, but there's a lot,
so I'm going to not go into too much detail. The first thing that I grabbed is just a few
supplies. We really didn't need a lot of supplies because we have a ton. The first one is my
favorite little post-it tabs. I can never have enough of these. Emily and I use them for
everything, so I grabbed two packs of those. Then Emily really likes erasable pens, but she
also really likes mechanical pencils. So I got these Grabby erasable pens that kind of look
more like her pencils. It has more of a pencil-like look and then it just spins out.
I don't know if you can see that, but anyway you just twist it for the lid to come out or the pen
to come out. So I love the Frixion fineliners, but I'm hoping that this gives her more like the feel
that she likes while also giving her an erasable pen. So I got that for her to try. Then I also
grabbed some like puzzle books. I've been really into puzzle books personally here in the last few
months. The first one that I got and I really liked was Murder Among the Stacks and then Emily
wanted it too. So this is super cute. It's basically I think it's 50 puzzles, but as you're
doing the puzzles you're like also uncovering a murder. So for example here's what it looks like.
Each puzzle has like a chapter or a page where you read and then you do the word search and it's one
kind of like murder mystery as you go through. You're not solving, but you're doing a word search
that has to do with what you read and it is about a murder mystery and there's like five of these
in this series. So I got her the first one which is the same one I'm working on. We're going to
call that probably Logic for the year. The other one that I picked up for me and then she really
liked so she wanted another one for her is this Crime Search. This is like clue and word search
form. In fact she already has done a couple. She snagged it from me like really really quickly.
Okay so it is basically a word search and after you've done the word search there's going to be
one word left that wasn't included and that's going to be the killer and then there are letters
that are left in the puzzle that were not part of the words are going to be the crime scene
and a coded word which then you have to use this decoder to figure out the coded word which was
the weapon so when you're done you've done the puzzle and then you've figured out the killer
the location and the weapon based off of the coded word which this is in the front of the book and
you can cut it out and basically her and I are both using that as a bookmark to go along with it
and then two others that I picked up that neither her nor I have tried and I just grabbed one
for us to kind of both see what we thought about them was myrtle volume one and the lottery killer
and then I also grabbed these executive function mindset cards there are 52 we'll probably do one
a week um it's basically like for building focus follow through a mental clarity it's like for
habit building so I know you guys probably know last year we focused a lot on positive thinking
for mindset um that was kind of our main goal this year I really want to be focusing on
like like the habits and how to make goals and achieve them so it comes with like this little
wooden stand that you can put your card in and then this is kind of what the card looks like
so this one says leave your phone outside the task and then it has like this and all these
little call outs around it so your device is the strongest source of friction keep it physically
away when you need deep work and then it's got like all these little like tips so like power off
move it into another place or another room out of sight isn't perfect but it's powerful
anyway so it's like tips for how to do that so there's 52 of those um and then I guess we'll
start with books uh these are books that we'll be reading to go along with our world study
one for each continent we have secret of the andes call it courage a single shard
esperanza rising number the stars and a long walk to water okay next I have a bunch of science
comics that I picked up these are Emily's absolute favorite I went through all of the
science comics that are released like as of today or whenever I ordered a few weeks ago
and picked any of them that would like fall under biology and basically any of the ones we didn't
own that followed fell under biology I just bought them um these will be just part of her like free
reads that will she will be expected to read at some point during the year so we have science
comics plagues the brain the digestive system frogs coral reefs prehistoric mammals
elephants and deep sea creatures um okay these are like mostly reference books that I picked
up for the year we have write a romanticy so this is 99 writing prompts to craft to craft a tale of
heart and heroism the thinking toolbox we did um the fallacy detective I think it was um for two
years and so I grabbed this one which is kind of like the next one in the series we have super
simple biology the biology visual learning guide dinner and 30 minutes for teams so um Emily will
be expected a minimum of once a month to basically pick a recipe and prepare it for us so I thought
that would be a good addition to what we already have um the game master's guide to fantasy map
making so technically she wanted this because it's a really great addition to like her dnd
I got it because I have plans for our language arts this year that include basically it's going
to be fantasy based so I got this so that she could create her own fantasy map and kind of learn
how to do it better um I did go ahead and grab editor-in-chief level three for her so this is
the last level she was really like these over the years um and she wanted me to have this one because
she didn't want to like not have finished it um everyday amazing this one looks really fun because
it's just like random facts for every day of the year so I'm hoping that we'll have some really
great rabbit trails based off of that and then I couldn't decide which of these I wanted to do
this year so I went ahead and got both we'll probably do one this year and one next year
so I have 42 artists everyone should know and then also 42 works of art everyone should know
um okay next I have books lots and lots of books so my plan this year for fantasy is that's
basically what our English one is going to be is fantasy based um so all of her free reading will
be fantasy books is her favorite genre anyway um so basically she'll be reading fantasy books and
her free time um assigned reading whatever you want to call it and then over the course of the
year she will basically write um her own fantasy story book whatever you want to call it which is
why we'll be using the um guide to romanticy to help her write and then the map making book and
then I basically got her a bunch of books that she can choose from none of these will be required
some of the actually almost all of these are young adults so make sure you look at them before you
like go grab them um I use common sense media for the most part they're these are all like I'm okay
with them um I know there's going to be some where me and her may need to discuss some things
and I just wanted to give her a good kind of array of things to choose from so we have the golden
compass legend born a whole new world the cruel prince red queen six of crows gilded the burning
sky the house of marion night weaver aragon fireborne twilight lightlark king of scars
house of shadow and ash seraphina throne of glass shatter me city of bones six crimson cranes
the prison healer heartless shadow and bone and powerless now emily's birthday is next week
so most of those are actually her birthday gift I'm doing 14 books for 14 so that's where a lot
of that came in but I just wanted to show them because they were part of our homeschool this
year also I checked common sense media for the first book in these series I did not go any further
than that because I only bought the first book so I know that there's a couple of these series
where um she may not be reading the rest of them I'm just not sure yet so just because I mentioned
one does not mean that I automatically I'm like oh gonna let her read the whole series we'll see
as we go I also um have been enjoying Emily and I started a mother-daughter book club kind of thing
where we like read the same book and it's been really fun um she will pick one of those for her
picks every time because fantasy is her favorite genre so that's always gonna be what she picks
but I wanted some other genres to add in my favorite genre is like rom-com and murder mystery
thriller kind of thing so I grabbed a few of each of those that I thought she might also like that's
like young adult and approved and I grabbed them for her too so we could kind of have more than
just fantasy to read from because we each pick a book and then we like battle out to see whose
book wins so I got Agatha Christie's and Then There Were None, Two Can Keep a Secret, A Good
Girl's Guide to Murder, We Were Liars, That's Not My Name, The Body in the Woods, Truly Devious,
Twelfth Night, Dating and Dragons, Check and Mate, and Better Than the Movies so that just gives me
some books to pull from that I've already read enough on Common Sense Media to know I'm okay
with her reading so there's that. Okay next up we have games. I pretty much bought games in three
categories for the most part and three categories only to limit myself. I either bought them to go
along with biology, world history, and geography because those are like our two big things we're
doing this year or they were two-player because I wanted to add a few more two-player. The only
one that does not fit into that category is this Power Quiz Animal World. This is a trivia-based
game. What I liked is that these questions increased in difficulty and they actually seem
like there would be someone here that even Emily might not know. That's hard to do when it comes
to animal stuff. We like to do trivia over dinner so I grabbed that to add to our rotation. Okay
for our world we have around the world flux, we have the world game, and for history we have
chronology chronology whatever chronological so you're gonna like put the cards in chronological
order without knowing the dates and then you turn them over. It's kind of like timeline except a lot
more things and then like for biology I have biomes, nature, cellulose, a plant building game,
and then genotype which is like a genetics game. I have some other ones that we'll be using but we
already own them so these were the only two I needed to purchase from Genius Games to go along
with biology. And then for two player I have anatama I'm gonna assume is how you say that
it's kind of kind of looks like a Japanese chess type of game.
Solstice which has little needles so she's excited about that.
Obelisk I also like how small those two are they're great for traveling.
Spirits of the Wild Awakening, Azul Duel, we have original Azul but I thought dual would be a great
addition, and then Everdale Duo. Okay I have a couple hands-on things for biology. We are buying
a kit from somewhere so this is just a few additions to it. The first thing I have are 25
prepared biology slides to go with our microscope. I'm gonna make some sort of microscope like
recording page to go along with those. And then I got a rapid test soil test kit just for like some
fun hands-on something when we do like the ecology portion. And then this is gonna be like such a
weird idea but it seemed really fun to me and so this is something we're gonna do. I got a complete
water test kit. It'll be testing for 16 different parameters basically you're trying to see if the
water is safe to drink. We live in an area where like there's a lot a lot of water and we go to a
lot of places and we collect water. So everywhere that we go Kevin always gets water in a drinking
bottle or like a small something because he uses that water to watercolor something from that
location and then I've started doing it too. So like when we went to the lake recently we used the
lake water for the watercolor that we did of the lake. So I thought since we're doing it anyway
like every time we go on a trip it's always like let's go to a waterfall, let's go to a lake, let's
go to the beach, let's go to the spring, let's find water so that we can collect it. So I thought
since we were doing that anyway it would be kind of a cool experiment for her to do like all year
long for biology. So we're gonna be using these water tests. This was a hundred of them and she's
gonna be just testing the water and keeping like a log of it. So think like a nature journal but
with water. So she'll write like I'm gonna make a page for her like where we were, what the date was
and then she will record the testing and then I'm probably gonna put like a would you have drank the
water from here kind of thing. We may even extend that some and do like life straws and stuff and
see like when you use those does the water become drinkable. But for now our goal is basically just
to use the water as like a nature journal. And then I also got her these 40 science models
for the plant cell and the animal cell. I didn't buy any of the animal 40 models because we have
some and also I'm debating on getting her some dissections instead like I'm kind of going back
and forth. I don't know whether I'm going to get her dissections or 40 models or if I'm going to
get her a mixture of both. So I may still pick up another 40 model. The last things that I got were
just a couple things for like our morning basket time. So this is like hands-on stuff for her.
The first one I grabbed was this Happy Plants Lego. This is actually probably going to be her
first day of school gifts. She really thought this was adorable in Target so I grabbed it for her.
I also got her a Diamond Art Club box. This is one that Amazon had. It was the fairy tale set
so they're just like small little fairy tales. I will say the quality of the set was phenomenal.
So these are the fairy tale diamond art that she will be doing. But like the drills and the
tools and everything for the set I was pretty blown away. So she's going to be really excited
about that. I picked her up a new coloring book because you guys know she loves coloring.
This one is Meowster Pieces which is hilarious because it's like cats in the famous masterpieces
so she'll think that's funny. She's going to love that it has Starry Night on the front.
That's her favorite piece like ever. I also got her a new sticker by Number. This is a Whimsical
World. This one is really really well done. Like it's beautiful. Foil stickers.
And then we fell in love with some mini lifelines and so I got her one of these large ones.
Basically it is a bunch of dots. Like it's a bunch of letter circles and you use these markers that
come with it that by the way hook to the back of the book so it's amazing because you don't lose
them. You can see right here and you just dot all the letters and it ends up becoming a picture.
So it's similar to like sticker by Number but it's dots. This one is metallic so they're like
metallic pictures and this is a dark blue black paper so it's gonna be a lot of fun for her.
And then the last one I got is this air dry clay kit. It is I think it's 12 different
cake themed ideas but each one is its own little like like little mini kit. So
here is the clay to use and then inside the cover here when you open it is the directions for how
to make this and then you just have like a small tool set that it came with to use.
There's 12 of those in here so she can make all these little food items and I just thought that
would be a really great quiet time because she doesn't really have to like dig through and find
a lot of things. She doesn't have to worry about finding the colors like it's all kind of done
and brainless for her because I find that that is normally our biggest struggle with her trying to
find something to do while I'm reading aloud is like making the decision which is why she pretty
much colors all the time because trying to figure out what is she going to create if she does clay
like if she doesn't already have an idea going in it almost feels like um like a struggle so that
way it's done like she just picks one and it's it's pre-made like she doesn't have to think about
it she just does what's on the directions so that's why I grabbed that. So that is everything
that I purchased for our first year of high school and I'm hoping that we are going to
have a fantastic year because these are some amazing resources.
