Well is it ever a hot one out there today? We don't have an ocean breeze and it's muggy.
I think the temperature would be only like 26 or something but they say it feels like 35.
It's really muggy. So I'm getting some water on the go so I keep drinking from it.
But there's something in, there's something amiss in my garden.
I've been thinking and trying to get out there and show you what I'm talking about.
These are some berries from redcurrant from last year. They're soon to come,
they're out but now they're soon to be red so I just like to make some flavored water.
These are strawberries from my garden and some limenut from my garden. I think I'll start with
that. If you heard a noise in the background by the way that's my air conditioning which is
something we don't have to have on very often here in Newfoundland. How does that, no let's do more.
I'll show you what's amiss and it's a good thing.
There is a breeze but it's coming down from our cliffs up there not from the ocean and boy does
it make a difference. I've been harvesting my broccoli, the only brassica really that I've
been harvesting for about a week and a half maybe, maybe two weeks. I'm going to stay on top.
What's very interesting this year is aside from taking it in and washing it I don't have to go
through to see if there's any bugs because, and I'll show you closer, there's been no
cabbage white moths. So my brassicas aside from slugs I have to say last year I didn't see slugs
this year they're murdering my plants but last year I had an awful lot of the cabbage white moth.
I don't cover my plants. I like to let nature do its fighting things and it works very well for me
but this year there's not a sign. So it's so interesting how our gardens from season to season
they always keep it interesting because you never know what's going to hit or not hit and
this is the first time that I've seen since we moved to Newfoundland no cabbage moths.
So I usually see the the first flush of them which is May, June and caught that one on time
too. I can't believe how fast these are growing but you'll see the leaves aside from some early
slug damage which you can see the slug slime on there there's nothing. So they missed a whole
cycle here is what I'm guessing as to the reasons. Here's a closer look I'll get these three today
as I say I'm just trying to really keep up on them and these are just slugs there's no bugs
on these whatsoever and here's another one yeah I think I'll take all three of those and oh and
that one and my cabbage so here you can see this is totally the first leaf that came out
now my lettuce is popping underneath it and it's slug damage and I just didn't even bother trying
to pick slugs off this year. Now red cabbage very seldom has the cabbage moth on them but
let me show you some more there's more it's wonderful normally I would see so much damage on
these not that it's detrimental to my vegetable itself but I usually see a lot of signs and I don't
even see the moths flying around which if you watch any of my videos you'll always see those moths
here because Newfoundland has quite uh or I do anyway quite a fairly good population of them
let's see look my black kale never gets anything on it oh I gotta get that one too
oh my goodness we're having something broccoli for dinner and there's some heads that I've taken
before so what has kept the pest away this year I believe there's probably a couple of things
we had and I've mentioned on and on probably how cold our June was
minus temperatures in the evenings so many nights and just probably wasn't pleasant enough
for the moths to go flying around which is a bonus I guess when you complain about the cold
these are little varieties I grow that mature fast I also they're all winter sown
but then the other reason as I mentioned I don't cover my vegetables so I'm hoping that the
natural predators I guess to the caterpillars mostly is birds and what do we have wasps
parasitic wasps uh spiders I invite them into my garden even my Brussels sprout leaves
which don't worry about too much because it doesn't hurt the sprouts themselves
but they look good now I don't doubt these will get hit with that second flush probably any day
and over here hidden away from the slugs is my successions for broccoli and cabbage
the succession plants are coming along that's a broccoli and this is cabbage
so I wonder if they'll make it through the second flush without anything that would be lovely if I
time it right maybe I'll do some research now I'll tell you a pest that is doing well another
one besides slugs is cutworm I think this is probably the fourth cabbage that's been taken out
so just a small win-win in the garden but it's so great to get a break from those I'll tell you now
I'm certainly going to check my lettuce for slugs that'll get a thorough run through I got to keep
up on them lettuce also well I thank you so much for watching please consider subscribing take care
and we'll see you soon
