These two shades of pink are two of my nemesis colors and I say nemesis because whenever I
wear them they just look pretty off like they stand out against my skin tone in a strange way
they just really pop they make my skin almost look a little bit sickly a little bit green
and you can probably tell why like you can see these two pinks and how opposite they are from
and I have an olive skin tone so there's a desaturation to my skin that's kind of yellowy
green in some lights and these are the opposite of that these are vibrant saturated this one almost
looks neon but what if I want to wear colors like this what if sometimes colors that are
disharmonious can actually be some of the most stunning colors we wear that's what I want to
explore today because I think when it comes to color there's so much we can tap into in terms
of playing with disharmony as much as harmony but also considering ways and techniques we can
integrate all kinds of colors into our makeup into our wardrobe whatever it is so I'm going to
share with you some makeup techniques I've discovered for how I make something that doesn't
quite work work and then I also want to kind of revisit the color seasons and some things we can
take from them but also some things we can add to the color seasons to then you know expand what
kinds of colors you can play into and really just unlock more tools for your style toolbox so I'm
going to get into this tutorial we're going to talk a little bit more I'm going to show you some
examples of celebrities who've really unlocked ways to use color that I think make them look
more stunning because it is kind of dissonant there's so much to unpack here so that's the
plan for today let's get into it okay right off the bat let's apply one of these pinks I'm going
to go for the lighter almost neon one because I think it's even more strange on me whereas the
one has a bit of romance to it that I can kind of play into but this one this one's kind of weird
thank you mother for lending me these lipstick shades this one's from melt and it's the shade
alma gemella oh she's vibrant you know you can see how my natural lip tone is so desaturated it
almost looks purpley in comparison oh my god I swear my skin looks more green the more I apply
this this has to be the strangest color I think I've ever put on my face look how green my skin
looks is it just me I don't think so this is a strange color and you know what it's probably a
bit strange for many people but at the same time it's kind of awesome it is so unique and so fun
so how am I going to make this work so what kind of started a lot of this thought process for me
and really starting to get into color again was this dress I featured this in quite a few style
explorations it's called my aphrodite dress and it's blue and for many years I did not wear blue
and yet when I put on this dress please ignore how it looks with the lipstick right now
I started to unlock this idea of exploring color more because something about this blue and this
dress kind of really elevated my skin really brought out my hair color some of the vibrancy
of it in ways that simply sticking to neutrals and blacks didn't so I've been on a bit of a
journey starting to add more blue and other colors into my wardrobe but I started to consider what is
it about this blue that worked and it did become clear to me that I do have a lot of softness and
mutedness in my skin and this blue is muted for a few reasons one the actual color of it you know
this blue this blue they're not bright and vibrant compared to something like this blue when I hold
it up you can really see the difference whereas when you see it on its own you might not notice
but when you compare and contrast shades you can really see how different they look this one much
more white based a lot more vibrant and this one just so much softer and not just because of it
being these softer blues but the mix that's happening within it you know there's this
watercolor-esque monet kind of energy happening here we've got beigey pink soft yellow soft oranges
all integrated to create yes a blue dress but a general effect of just more harmony for someone
like me wearing a blue you know I have a warm undertone so blues can be a little bit more
tricky sometimes but between the tones I use as well as this mixology of other colors it just
makes it so harmonious and so beautiful and the fact that the blue is a little different than
my skin tone and a little different than my red warm hair makes it pop even more because of that
contrast so we are going to apply the same theory to this lipstick so what you want to find is
essentially colors that I call bridge points where you find something that between the color itself
and between your skin tone something merges it like a gradient when it comes to lips for example
obviously lip liners these are great tools to create dimension in lips and to shift the colors
a little bit make them deeper make them more muted so when I look at this shade this very vibrant pink
I'll think of what lip liner do I have in my collection that is kind of similar but I know
works for me and I have for example this glossier this is the shade grays so for me it's a little
bit more orange so I think this might be a good transition point I think it has enough pink in it
that it could blend into a pink so what I want to do is use this shade as the bridge point between
my skin tone and the lipstick and then we're also going to apply some other techniques after that
but this is your first step finding shades that merge that in between of the strange bright color
whatever it is and your actual skin tone but first and foremost I am going to blot this off a little
bit you know take away a little bit of how opaque and intense it is while still preserving the
essence of the color now let's go ahead and feather this lip liner into this lip shade
I haven't even blended this at all I've just applied the line on the perimeters of my lips
and can we already see how much of a difference that made just that step from the beginning
where it was standing out so intensely we're just shifting over into it already looking a lot more
wearable and then you'll want to feather that in and blend it maybe you want to reapply and realize
oh my gosh actually this is working way more we really still have the essence of this color
this vibrant really light and bright pink but it's already just sitting on my face just a little
better now the next step we're going to add more bridge points on the face for me I know that when
my skin has bronzer to it when it has a bit more red to it rather than just being stark and very
olivey it just adds this depth that generally can handle color a little more so I'm going to go ahead
and apply my favorite bronzer and in doing so I'm just adding more places of harmony on my face
so that this place of disharmony can start to look a lot more intentional because everything else
is working out everything else on my skin is just feeling very natural and harmonious
then when something looks a bit out of place it somehow makes more sense and looks like it's
really supposed to be there you know if I decided to wear this pink lipstick and pair it with a
bunch of gray contour with a blush that was exactly this color too and then you know let's just say
an eye look that is was also this bright pink you're just gonna see all these points on my face
that are just like not working like it's standing out so much really understanding your features and
the colors that work for you always use that really as just your grounding point from which
you build a look the bridge point from which you then expand into other colors and start to play
with other you know bits of depth and textures and whatever it is and as I continue to apply
this bronzer and blend it out I'm sure you're seeing how my skin is looking less green and stark
against the pink in fact the more I apply the bronzer the more I'm like dang this pink color
is so pretty so at this point things are already looking a lot better now as you start to build the
look and add more colors into the face like blush and if you wanted to do eyeshadow I want you to
consider an aspect of color that we don't always talk about which is the energy of a color insofar
as you see a color what do you think of blue oceans calm at least like a light blue something
like this I think of vibrance and summer and spring and you know it's really the opposite of
some kind of dark moody onyric look so I want to find colors that will complement the energy
just as much as it complements my skin tone so this light vibrant really intense pink what colors
do I have for blush in my collection that also give that energy so I think of rose ink anemone
this is like a peachy tone that to me also feels very spring-like however it suits my complexion
a lot better it's one of those shades I can turn to very easily so by applying this I know I'm not
going to be working against my skin tone however I am going to be playing into the energy of this
color because this is just one of those things that's going to help everything feel intentional
and like it's meant to be there because for me when it comes to playing with color it's less so
about does it work with your complexion in terms of like is it soft muted harmonious like something
that works for me as in does it look intentional like you meant to do that that every part of the
look is working together and working to create an overall vibe if that makes sense so as I apply
this my skin is coming so much more to life than when we started out and you can see this blush
shade has a little bit of that light spring-like bright energy that the lip has but it is still a
it has more yellow to it so that it works with my slightly warmer complexion and as I continue the
look like now I'll do a little bit of eyeshadow I'm going to keep returning to these questions
what is the energy of the look and what colors can I use to support the intention of the look
as well as creating a more harmonious feeling and that you know I can really ensure that this pink
lip just is still the focus but also feels like it's meant to be there so I will take a couple of
those bridge shades like the lip liner the bronzer on my eye just work a little bit of a kind of soft
warm beige something like this into the eyelid I'm not going to do anything too intense because
this is very lip focus I don't want to compete with this I want this to be the headliner and
then in playing with this theme this little bit of a light spring-like energy I'm going to take
a little bit of peach from this palette that has that spring-like energy but these shades are a
little bit softer a little bit warmer so I know they work for me nicely I went ahead and just
applied some mascara because I didn't want to go too far with the eyeshadow look I chose a dark
brown that always works for me and then a very lashy doll-like effect that's still a little bit
subdued and now at this point you can see we have come a long way from when I first applied that
lipstick color I feel like my skin looks normal now and it feels like the pink is really just
meant to be there now at this point or you know also throughout your process you might want to
consider more stylistic details so this was really thinking about color finding those bridge point
colors I'm really playing into a lot of harmony to allow the disharmony to feel intentional and
then there's style so for example you know playing with texture maybe adding a little bit of shimmer
to something like I do love playing into a bit of my ethereal essence with looks so I might take
some highlighter and apply that have moments where there's these bits of light reflecting and bouncing
off my skin just kind of creates a look I like and feels like feels like me if you like to use
the Kitchener style essences you can also apply some things you've learned about that maybe then
I'll consider what earrings I might like to wear something that you know adds maybe some kind of
harmony in the look like I have a white dress on so I feel like this ties in together nicely and
then of course you could play with your hairstyle how that impacts the color maybe you want to put
your hair up and then doing something like that really allows like a lip color to stand out or
maybe you do want to have your hair out because it's something that makes you feel like yourself
I know that I always like my hair out and wavy so whenever I'm trying looks like this that are a
little bit different they always make me feel better when I'm really have these core pieces
of my style that are also supporting it as much as the colors I choose are supporting it and wow
look how far we've come from when I started and how different this color now translates
on my soft features it feels like it's supposed to be there so much more than when I first just
applied it right out of the bullet so at this point I just want to review some aspects that
you can learn from the color seasons and color theory and just really give you a rundown on the
extra tools that you can also consider as you then play into harmony and disharmony so when it comes
to the color seasons it really focuses on these three aspects of color there's temperature so
whether a color is warm or cool and there's a scale you know right in the middle is neutral
then we also have value which is light versus dark so think of a pastel color versus a very
dark color or white versus black at its most extreme and then we also have saturation which
is how muted and soft a color is versus saturated and bright and if you've ever been confused about
this you know when you get a color let's just say this cloth I have in front of me and it just it's
pink is it a cool pink is it a muted pink you know maybe in comparison to your skin tone it
looks bright but then you hold it up to another person's skin tone and it looks dark or beside
another color it looks like something else because everything influences our perception right
something that may look warm beside one color may actually be a lot cooler than you think so
one nifty tool I like to use is in any kind of editing program like Canva which is free for the
basic tools or PicMonkey is just using that little dropper and then you can really look at where a
color lands on a color scale and you know this is for those of us who like to nerd out a little bit
about color and really understand it but this can be a really fun thing just to do in some downtime
like find some of your favorite lipstick shades what happens when I put that into the program
and select it where does that color land you know you can do the same thing with pictures of yourself
because you know your skin tone impacts how colors translate you could pick up on a color and really
see oh okay so that's what that color is it I can see that it lands a little closer to gray
than it does to white I can see how maybe a color has a lot of white added to it it's very
high up there on this little palette or oh wow that color is kind of darker than I thought brighter
than I thought whatever it is this can be just a fun tool to really understand these very basic
qualities of color that really determine whether something is harmonious and really understand the
qualities of it that make that color translate a certain way and why it translates a certain way
on you you know a lot of the time I had picked up colors like even that first lip liner shade
I'll just go ahead and swatch that again and I picked this up thinking oh you know that's like
a light peach uh but no like now that I've really been exploring color and understanding you know
gray added versus white added this is pretty muted no wonder it works for me it isn't a very
white based kind of coral it's much more deep and looks more like a toasted apricot and the reason
I am harping on a little bit about understanding color is because when you want to maybe order a
dress online being able to you know maybe even take that dress and put it into a program and
see how it lands I can help you understand like what the what qualities the color has because it
may not be apparent right off the bat especially based on how it looks against someone else's skin
tone or a lipstick color or maybe like me you're in this point where with your wardrobe you do want
to start adding more pieces and for me I like this idea of playing with fun colors sometimes
that don't look necessarily harmonious but I do want to have just as I have in my makeup collection
a lot of colors that do work that are just so effortless I can grab and put on so then when I
opt for those more bold bright colors I can find ways to make them more intentional because I can
pair them with other aspects in my closet that are harmonious exactly the same way I did with
the makeup so when you think about playing with color think about those three very basic aspects
of color but what I want you to think about too is playing into harmony and disharmony and consider
that a scale just as much as light to dark as a scale just as much as saturated to soft and muted
is a scale think about harmony and disharmony and how much you want to play into that when it comes
to how you play with color maybe you just want to hit this middle ground where rather than wearing
you know a very bright pink like this you actually fully mix it with a lip liner shade so none of
this very vibrant pink is coming through you want to still have a little bit of the essence of that
color but you'll take a lip liner shade and mute down your whole lip first and then dab just to
that color maybe you want to swing in a direction where disharmony is something you
want to lean to even more so you don't want to have those bridge points of tonality in the lip
you want to go for that really bold lip but then you know use other tools like the rest of your
complexion to then play into that really intense disharmony and then like I mentioned I think
thinking about the energy of color is also important and this would be less of a scale
and probably more like a circle like a mood circle I think there's something in certain
therapies where it's like what is this mood what is this emotion and think of how color can
translate as that and think of it as just another tool to explore color in your style and you know
something feels moody and dark something feels vibrant and alive invigorating something feels
soft and calming these are all tools that we can harness with color just as much as those
three aspects that color theories focus on now here's just a couple celebrity examples of how
styling can work into disharmony just as much as harmony dove cameron is someone that comes up a
lot on color theory and how she really doesn't work within her color palette and I've seen
re-edits of some of her fashion and how you know bringing it into her lighter softer features
makes everything look more harmonious but with her dark hair and those more edgy looks
paired with her softness of her features you know I see these full lips and you know round cheekbones
you get this really interesting effect in that you know the darker colors are more intense more
gothic but then paired with the lushness of her features the softness of her features
it I think it creates this very unique expression of her style and I think she looks really kind of
more striking because she's working into disharmony like it it really unlocks something another
celebrity that comes to mind is Anya Taylor-Joy I've seen a lot of critiques of her more bleach
blonde hair and the kinds of colors she wears because she has a little bit more softness
in her natural coloring but I personally think the very intense blonde hair leans into
her essence that's very ethereal very otherworldly and if she had a more natural kind of hair color
it doesn't quite give the same effect and then I do often think of this look of hers it's one of my
all-time favorite looks I've ever seen because everything is so light and icy but then you have
this bold red lip like that is not color harmony that is disharmony and that is just a way you can
really just create such a beautiful effect with color and with playing into disharmony that
disharmony scale I talked about just as much as harmony and everything that works for you those
are just a couple examples that come to mind maybe I'll do a follow-up video soon because
this is a topic that I really love to explore and I think we can tap into so much creativity with our
makeup and and not just creativity like I'm not saying you have to have really artsy looks but
