I'm lost without your love. Don't know how you got a hold. Love so deep that's on my soul, and I thank you for it.
No way a blind man could ignore it. I've been missing you lately. How you put it down and stay on it?
Look, when she's not educating her children, she's busy in the studio making some soulful melodies with an authentic Detroit sound.
So you just heard Alexis Allen's hit, Do You Know?
That's featuring Mina Mahone this morning. She's joining us here in the Fox 2 studio.
Alexis, how are you this morning?
Hi, thank you so much for having me.
You have a very nice smile, I might add.
I appreciate it.
Look, I remember a time when we would look forward to Tuesdays listening to new music.
Yes.
I know we don't have that now because we have Apple Music and TikTok, but we're introducing people to some new music this Tuesday.
Let's go.
Alexis, let's talk about your story here.
So we've got the Golden Sphinx.
Yes.
We've got Collabs in Seven. So these are two projects that you've recently released.
Yes.
How did they come about?
So Golden Sphinx is a project that's dedicated to my children, my son Josiah Lee.
He is two years old, and you see him on the back of the cover.
I'm just going to show you guys.
There you go.
Yeah, that's him.
Looking nice like a pharaoh.
Yes, like a young pharaoh.
So it had an Egyptian theme.
It features Guilty Simpson, Fat Cat, Dopehead, and L.E. San Diego.
It's produced by DJ Cage.
And then this also, Collabs in Seven, is my seventh solo project.
And it has collabs with Detroit hip-hop.
So Mina Mahone, you have L.E. San Diego, you have Ant Live from Boom Bap Kings, you have Black Lion Society.
You can show it over here.
There we go.
You have Conflict and Sara Lee of hip-hop.
And you have Goldie Foxx and C. Dale.
So everybody's on here.
You guys should check it out.
There's three visuals on YouTube right now for this project.
There's five visuals for this project on YouTube.
So check me out.
Check it out right after you watch this segment here.
Alexis, you mentioned your work with a lot of other Detroit artists.
Yes.
I think one thing I love about this city is so many artists work together.
And they're willing to jump into these projects.
So what does that say about Detroit for you?
And what does it mean for the rest of the music world to say,
Hey, look, Detroit, we stand together.
We put our music out together.
It's the Motown sound.
Detroit, we're family.
You know, it's a family vibe.
Whenever we have events, whenever we come together, do jam sessions, every time it's a vibe.
So I love creating with my people.
I love highlighting their talents as well as my own.
We're better together.
You win when you're together.
Yes, you do.
You're also teaching the next generation.
So how did you get involved in paying it forward?
So I started teaching when I was 19 at Marygrove College for the kids college.
That's where I got my undergrad degree from.
And I got the bug after I did the Super Bowl.
Then I moved to New York, and I taught in every borough in New York for about 10 years.
I got to perform and travel.
And I just love giving back to the children.
Look, Alexis, I love how you just slid in after I did the Super Bowl.
Because I do want to ask you about that.
So Super Bowl 40 was here in Detroit.
You had an opportunity to perform in the pregame.
Yes, the pregame.
With Stevie Wonder, Josh Stone, John Legend.
How did that come about?
Oh, my gosh.
So I had an audition at Marygrove College.
And I had just started dancing.
I wasn't even going to go.
And my teachers encouraged me to go.
And I went.
I made the first round.
I got the call back.
Went to the second round.
There was a room with like 500 dancers in there.
And I kept getting picked every time people got cut.
Until I was in rehearsal.
There you go.
What advice would you give anyone who maybe is in that position now?
Oh, my God.
Believe in yourself.
No matter what naysayers say.
No matter who you feel like has the opportunity for you.
You make opportunities for yourself.
So believe in yourself.
Go ahead and reinvent the wheel as many times as you need to.
Someone will recognize it.
You recognize yourself.
Once you believe in yourself, everyone else will.
Alexis, it's a pleasure.
Best of luck.
Continued.
Let people know where they can find you.
