Chopin (1810–1849)’s Nocturne No. 20 in C-sharp minor, Op. posth. was composed around 1830, when Chopin was still in his early twenties. The work was not published during his lifetime and was discovered among his manuscripts after his death, which is why it is known as a posthumous work (Op. posth.).
Beginning with a quiet, deeply expressive melody, this Nocturne reveals Chopin’s extraordinary lyricism and emotional depth. The music conveys a delicate mixture of sorrow, solitude, nostalgia, and hope. After the gentle opening, the piece gradually transforms into a passionate and dramatic middle section before returning to a calm and reflective atmosphere, as if portraying the journey of the human heart.
For this performance, I have chosen the arrangement by the legendary 20th-century violinist Nathan Milstein (1904–1992). Originally written for piano, Chopin’s beautiful melody takes on a new dimension when expressed through the violin. The instrument’s natural ability to sing, the subtle nuances between notes, and the expressive possibilities of the bow allow the music to breathe like a human voice. Through the violin, this beloved Nocturne reveals another layer of warmth and emotional depth.
This piece is also widely known for its memorable appearance in the film The Pianist (2002). In the midst of one of history’s darkest periods, the music represents the enduring power of art, human dignity, and hope, leaving a profound impression on audiences around the world.
