In July 2024, Keir Starmer led the Labour Party to a resounding general election victory.
After 14 years of Conservative rule, he was viewed as responsible for turning his
party's fortunes around after taking the reins from Jeremy Corbyn.
You voted for it and now it has arrived. Change begins now.
Just two years later, the former lawyer is leaving Downing Street.
Viewed by some as a poor communicator lacking in charisma,
critics say he squandered his party's parliamentary majority through his
indecisiveness and a series of unpopular policies.
One of his first perceived missteps was scrapping the winter fuel payment
for all but the poorest pensioners, an unpopular move he later reversed.
But his biggest regret will likely be nominating Peter Mandelson
as ambassador to the United States before having to fire him
for his links to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Had I known at the time what I know now or knew in September, I'd have never done it.
And that's why today I've apologised for the fact that I appointed him
in the first place and I believed his lies.
Facing a rising extreme right, Starmer decided to toughen his tone on immigration,
alienating many in his own party.
And in local elections in May, Labour still performed disastrously
against Nigel Farage's Reform Party.
On the international stage, his relationship with US President Donald Trump deteriorated
after he refused to enthusiastically back the Iran war.
But Starmer helped to reinforce the UK's relations with the European Union
and was a vocal supporter of Ukraine.
The UK commitment to Ukraine will not waver.
And it was really important as I stepped down that I told that to President Zelensky.
Deposed by his own party, he's passing the keys of Downing Street to Andy Burnham,
the former mayor of Greater Manchester.
Starmer fans argue he reduced NHS waiting lists
and increased spending on public services and the military.
But he also leaves the UK with a struggling economy and ongoing political instability.
The country has seen seven prime ministers in the past 10 years.
