Spain was a sea of red and yellow as football fans flooded the streets to celebrate their
team's 1-0 win against Argentina. In central Madrid, thousands of supporters gathered in
the Plaza de Colón, ecstatic at their second World Cup trophy.
What we've experienced is incredible. 16 years since the last one. It's mind-blowing,
beating Argentina who didn't deserve it. They just didn't deserve it.
In Barcelona, supporters had watched the match on a big screen. Spain dominated the game,
but only scored an extra time, with a goal from Fernand Torres in the 106th minute.
The relief from their fans was palpable.
They made us suffer. We suffered. But Argentina suffered even more.
They were down the player and we could tell.
Despite Argentina's loss, there was still dancing in Buenos Aires.
And supporters said they remained proud of their team.
It breaks my heart. But it still brings people joy, even though we lost. People are still happy.
They're happy because we reached the World Cup final and gave everything we had. Absolutely
everything. Although some regretted that their star player, 39-year-old captain Lionel Messi,
didn't get to hold the winning trophy one last time.
It's sad. I would have liked him to win the final and to see him have one last moment of joy.
But I'm still really happy that he played and that I got to see him one last time at a World Cup.
Argentina had hoped to become the first team to secure a consecutive World Cup win
since Brazil in the 1960s. But it wasn't to be.
Instead, supporters consoled themselves with fireworks and partying into the night.
