AI GeneratedA tour of \"The Alder,\" a unique custom-designed tiny house located in Holmes County, Ohio, within the heart of Amish country. The home emphasizes intentional living, reconnection, and modern minimalism, offering a high-end guest experience with a focus on natural light and thoughtful architectural details.
I finally made it. This is the alder. I have been messaging these hosts for actual years for me to
come here, and we're here today. I absolutely love this tiny house. It gets a very high rating. The
unique custom design to it really speaks for itself, and it's just a fun, refreshing design
of a tiny house, and I want to be showing you everything here today. We're up here in Holmes
County in northern Ohio, beautiful Amish country. This is one of the largest populations of Amish
in the entire world. There's so much to do in this area, and we're here at the alder. Let's
check this place out. Tell me a little bit about the alder and maybe the inspiration behind this
build. It's definitely unique. Well, we had a really good experience building it as a family.
We were inspired to build tiny homes, and so we looked at ideas and some books and magazines, and
we came up with this idea, so we built it, and yeah, it was an answer prayer to us,
and one thing you'll notice once you're here is we actually don't have any TV,
and that's one of the things where we wanted to be intentional about providing a space
where our guests could come to reconnect. We have some books and games here, and yeah,
we've been really blessed with that, with the comments that they make, the reviews,
and also we have a guest book there where they sign in. They're very personal. Oh, yeah. We're
just humbled by those testimonies. What's the square footage of the space? Do you know?
Just under 400 square foot, including this loft. Arriving at Woodridge Stays, we're here in Sugar
Creek, Ohio, Amish country, so you'll be passing farms, you'll be passing horse and buggies, and
that makes it really fun for tourists because there's a lot to do. But to find your home,
they stick out really nicely among all the other homes here. These are very different. We're going
to be touring the alder today. We arrive onto the back part, and the exterior is gorgeous. I love
the custom shape of this. The butterfly design roof, I think is what you'd call it, and the
exterior is actually stucco, white stucco, which is really, really unique, and the front has
beautiful, beautiful glass. We'll be getting there in a second. We walk onto the back side, though.
We have this outdoor deck space, a grill, some seating options here, and of course, we get
beautiful views in front of us. The deck continues all the way up to the front side where those
windows are, and you can enjoy your time out here. But if you want to walk inside and check
out the interior and why I like the space so much, let's walk inside this door on this side.
Walking inside, I am immediately blown away by this tiny house. It is so unique. The floor plan
is nothing like we've seen before. The design choices, it's just all custom, and I think they
did such a fantastic job. I'm here on the main floor. There's a loft above me, and it just has
everything we need. Everything is here, and I'm excited to just get into this tour. When we walk
inside, we're in the living room space, all open, very tall ceilings in here, and thanks to this
huge glass wall, we get amazing natural light. You can see the light beams are just shining
right on the kitchen, the living room, everywhere in here is shining on me. We get beautiful views
of the field. There's horses right over there. They're playing with each other. It's amazing,
but these windows are also tinted, so I'm getting direct sunlight right now, but they're definitely
tinted because it's not like I'm stepping outside or anything, and the space is surprisingly cool.
So I'm here, and it's about 95 degrees. I just checked on my watch. I don't know why I did that.
It's hot here. There's two AC units in here, and it's cool because you would think this would be
a greenhouse effect with these windows, but they're tinted and of course insulated, and that
whole nine yards plus the AC, it helps a lot. So I'm telling you, you'll be comfortable, and if you're
in here in the winter, if it's snowing in northern Ohio, we have a beautiful fireplace over here in
the corner. It doesn't take up much space at all. It's floating, literally hanging from the ceiling.
It's about 20 feet in the air. Very, very cool. Also, one thing I forgot to mention are the blinds.
You can close the blinds on the windows if you need to, so that's a nice little benefit, of course,
on all the windows as well. Anyway, this is the living room space. Nice wood flooring. This couch
is incredible. It's West Elm, and that's very expensive in itself. This is a multi-thousand
dollar couch. It also converts into a bed, so if you need a second bed, we have one right here,
but that's a very comfortable couch. If you're looking for a white couch that's also a bed,
check out West Elm. Over here, we have the kitchen space. Now, you might think this is just a
kitchenette or something. It's not. This is a full kitchen. Now, this is one part of it. The other part
is back over there on the other side of the wall, but here we have your sink with the window in
front of us, floating shelves. These are real oak floating shelves. A lot of floating shelves are
fake or plastic. Of course, we have storage below. Nice countertop, but here's what stood out to me.
This was the first thing my eyes laid upon when I walked in here. These blueberry muffins,
they are baked fresh every morning for the guests by the hosts. It's a family business,
so the daughter bakes these every morning, and I cannot wait to dig into these. I'll keep those
here for now. They leave a little welcome book there and some flowers, of course. Fantastic.
That's the kitchen space. The coffee is locally sourced as well, and over here, we have a seating
option and some games in the basket. They leave these TV trays as well. I am a big fan of eating
while... Oops, that fell. Anyway, I'm a big fan of eating while sitting on the couch. I know some of
you guys probably think that's Neanderthal-like, but that's what I do, so I'm glad they have those
here because there's no dining option here, so you'd have to sit down on one of these seats to
eat. Anyway, let's continue to the back half. The home continues back this way. This is where we
walk inside, and your other segment of the kitchen is right here in front of me. It's interesting how
it's divided against this wall. They probably had to do that because this wall probably supports
the bed frame up top, and the host was saying this is just two squares kind of catty-cornered
on each other, so that probably just had to be there. But on this side, we have the cooking
element built into the countertop, mini fridge below, more storage here as well, the microwave
above us, so we have a full kitchen. I guess there's no oven. You won't be baking your meatloaf.
Anyway, this is one of my favorite things. This is the most simple element for hanging your clothes
I have ever seen, or your jackets. It's just a metal square mounted to the ceiling, and they
have six hangers here. You can just hang up your clothes. It takes up no space at all. It's so
minimal, as well as a fruit basket right here to hang up your fruits. I love that. I love the simple
elements in here because the design of the home is speaking for itself. We have white walls,
white cabinets, a lot of places that would be kind of boring. In here, you want the windows. You want
the outdoor elements. You want the angles and all of the dimension to speak, and that's what's
happening here, and I think it is fantastic. I really like this spot. The cool thing they leave
here are two brochures, one for the Acacia and one for the Alder, that you can take these with
you. That's the design. That's the whole point of them, so it's just a little thing about the
space you can take with you, give to your friends if you want to come back and stay at the other one.
It's a good reminder. I love that idea for Airbnb hosts. Anyway, continuing back here, we have a
washer and dryer. We've been seeing these more recently. I used to say it's really rare to see
washer and dryers in tiny houses, but I've been seeing them more and more recently. That's a nice
addition. It's almost standard in today's world. Very nice, LG. I think I have this exact model
in my house, the stackable LG ThinQ line. Anyway, this is what caught my eye. The storage built in
under the steps. Look at this drawer. It's triangular, and we have more storage down below
as well for your towels and such because you will need towels in the bathroom, which is right behind
this door. This bathroom is pretty skinny, but it has everything. The toilet on the left side with
the floating shelves above you. We have the vanity here in the middle. This vanity is micro, so we
have the shelf above it for your soap and such, and then we have the tile shower on the other side.
We have everything you need there, and then we can walk up these steps, real wood steps, real wood
handrail, and up here is the bedroom space. Ow! And up here is the bedroom space. Watch your head
here. The angle slopes upward, so if I stand on this side, you know, of course, I get more space.
If I'm crawling into bed on the handrail side, you got to watch your head. We do have the bed up here.
I really like these linens and the color they chose. Up here, we do have another AC and heating
unit, so you will be getting good air while you're up here. This window along the wall enables for
good viewing while you're up here as well, but overall, this is a simple bedroom. It's just the
loft with your bed to come up here and hang out and sleep. I really, really like this layout. Is this
the largest area in the country for Amish country or a second largest? I know this is a huge area.
Tell me a little bit about that. So, if you compare Amish County with Lancaster County, they're neck
to neck with each other. There's a point in time when Holmes County was the largest in the world,
and then I think Lancaster is ahead right now, but it's close. The area is very community-minded,
so people work together. If somebody has a need, maybe their barn burns down or they have a
hospital bill, they pitch in and help each other out. A lot of people say it's a slow-paced lifestyle,
and it is what you make it, but one of the things that guests will notice, tourists will
notice when they come into the area is that most of the stores are closed on Sundays. It does give
it a relaxed, slow-paced view. All right, so what do I rate this space? I'm going to give this
a 9.5 out of 10. I think this is amazing. What's missing? A nice water feature, maybe a hot tub,
a pool, something like that. The host was telling me they will be adding a hot tub and a dividing
feature from the Acacia later in the future. Uncertain what the date is. If you want to book
this place, it's on the Airbnb. Check it out. I asked the hosts when the best time to visit is.
What's the best time of year to come? Peak tourist season is actually in October. That's where all
the leaves are turning color, they're bright, and it's pretty nice. Wow, so this is the perfect time
to be booking for the fall stay here. I don't get any kickback if you guys book this place or not,
so I'm not trying to sell you on it exactly. I just think it's a cool spot you should come
visit though. Anyway, if you guys would like to see the Acacia, let me know down in the comments
below. It's timber framed and it has a 40-foot beam inside from the west coast. I'll see you
guys in the next one.
