The journey focuses on tasting traditional local delicacies and interacting with the city's famous wild deer, highlighting the balance between the animals' gentle nature and their excitement for treats.
Hello everyone! Welcome to Sukushi Tokei!
Today we are in Nara and this is my first time here so I am
so excited. We're going to start the day here at Higashimuki
shopping street and then make our way to Nara park.
Anyway if you like videos like this don't forget to like and subscribe
and let's get into it. Oh my god that's so cute oh it's a deer oh
and there's other little deer in the background too.
I love that that's adorable. I have green tea mochi and what's cool
about this is you can choose the level of the
strength of the green tea or you can get roasted green tea, hojicha.
I did both so I got the highest strength green tea so it's meant to be
really bitter and I also got hojicha as well. I'm so
excited for this. The colours are
incredible so I'm just gonna bite the first one which is the strongest level
of green tea level five. Itadakimasu!
I don't know if it's because I'm just so used to green tea at this point but
that didn't taste as bitter as I thought it would be.
It was actually kind of sweet but I think that's because it has red beans
and cream in the middle so I think it kind of cancels out how
bitter the green tea could be but that was amazing. I love how chewy
the outside is and how soft the inside is. It's actually
quite heavy as well and I think that's probably due to the
red beans inside but it is delicious. I love that you can taste the
richness of the green tea. I definitely think it was a good option
to get the strongest level I just don't think the weakest level
would have been rich enough for me. So let's try the
hojicha one. I can't flip it because it's so heavy.
I love that. I love that you can tell how roasted
the tea flavour actually is. It really tastes like hojicha
and I just love how soft it is and the filling in the middle.
It's perfect. It's really heavy.
So the tea used to make the mochi is actually
yamatocha and yamatocha is actually over 1,200 years old
so it's super authentic and traditional. This deer is so cute. I love the cartoon
versions of the deer. I think they're so so cute. He looks so
happy.
Zenzai. I've always wanted to try zenzai. I think we should do it. Let's go.
I'm so excited because I'm having mochi
zenzai for the first time in my life. I've wanted to eat this
for so long and finally today is the day
so I'm super excited. It also came with hot tea
and shio kombu. I'm so ready for this but before I start eating
how beautiful is the deco of this shop. I love it so much. It looks so traditional
and cozy and I'm so excited to be here.
That's lovely. The mochi has absorbed some of the red beans
and also it's been toasted before it was put in here and so you can taste
the sweetness of the red beans in the mochi
and also you can taste the fact that it's been toasted
and it's so comforting and soft. It's delicious.
So the red beans in this are actually from Hokkaido.
I love this so much. It's basically a sweet
soup and we don't have anything like this in the UK at all
which is why I think I've been so excited to try this.
It's so good. It's really really magnificent. I can't believe
the richness of all the flavours in this. It's
so good and it's really warming me up because it's absolutely freezing today.
So here we have shio kombu and I'm really excited to try this because it's
another thing I've never had before.
I love that.
That's great. I really think, I mean I'm sure this would taste salty
anyway but after having the sweet red beans and the mochi, eating the shio
kombu, it's almost enhanced the saltiness of it
because what I ate previously was so sweet. I
really like that. It kind of puts me in a never-ending
cycle of wanting to eat the shio kombu and then drink some more of the
zenzai and then the zenzai is going to be sweet so it's going to make me
want more of the shio kombu and I'm just going to be going back and forth
the whole time. So now we're finally on our way to Nara Park
and I cannot wait to see the deer. I'm so excited. This has been on my list of
things to do in Japan for such a long time and I almost can't
believe today's the day that it's happening.
There's actually a sign in the middle of the road there telling drivers to watch
out for deer so I think they must come out into this
area. I can't believe they're already here. I thought they'd just be in like a
separate area in the park or just like crowded in
an area but they're actually out on the street. It's crazy.
They're so cute. Look how cute they are.
Look how beautiful you are. I can't wait to feed them.
So we've arrived in... hello. Anyway so we've arrived in Nara Park
and as you can see there are deer absolutely everywhere
and I thought they would kind of just be hanging out in one area.
I was wrong. They are everywhere but yeah they are wild animals so there is a sign
out front that basically says you do have to be careful because if
they want to they can attack you. But so far they seem
to be really comfortable around people so that's great. Apparently the deer have
been in Nara Park for over a thousand years
so they are truly native to this area and I can't wait to feed some of them.
They're waiting for me to get food. They keep coming towards me
and then they pretty quickly figure out that I don't have any food for them yet
and then they walk away. They're so cute. I felt something tugging on me and I
realized one of the deer had my bag in its mouth. I think the deer
really love this bag because it got bitten and now there is deer
dribble all the way down it. So something about
this bag they really really like. Nearly got attacked by a pigeon.
I don't have anything. I'm sorry. Not yet. I will soon. I promise.
I promise. You're so beautiful. I'm in love.
I love all of them. But I am a bit scared because I've
seen other people feed them crackers and they do get really excited
when you have the senbei so I'm a little bit nervous.
What is going on? Oh my gosh. I feel bad because I've been walking
around and they clearly want senbei and I don't have any. There
is a deer peeing behind the camera. I'm sorry.
So yeah they keep coming up to me. I don't have any senbei
so I feel like I've been teasing them for too long. So the deer senbei is
actually only made from rice bran and flour and that's not
their main source of food. They typically graze
on grass and acorns so the senbei is like a nice little treat for them
which is probably why they go so crazy whenever they see anyone with any.
So let's go and get some.
I have to very sneakily show you the senbei.
The reason why I'm hiding it is because as soon as the deer see this
they're going to go absolutely crazy. So I need to be very very careful.
It's got paper. Wait.
Oh my god. This is actually crazy. That's it. No more. No more.
I know you're cute. I'm sorry. You should have come this way. That's it. I don't
have any more guys. That's it. I'm sorry. They are scary.
They're still so cute though because even though they
kind of pull on you a little bit it doesn't hurt. They're really nice. I
still really like them but yeah whenever you have senbei
they go a little bit crazy. So the senbei was taken in like 10 seconds so I'm
gonna get some more and hopefully I can make it last a bit
longer this time. We've had to be really strategic so we've
snuck off to a quiet area where we can't find any deer
and we have the senbei. No one's noticed yet
but we're trying to figure out how to do it so like not a hundred come at once.
I'm really nervous. It's only a matter of time before they figure out we're here.
I really want to feed some of the smaller ones because the bigger ones are
the ones that are more confident and they come
right at you and I feel like they get fed a lot because you can't avoid them.
So I'm hoping to be able to feed one of the smaller shyer ones
but we'll see. Okay so I'm thinking we should find a small one
by itself and kind of approach it. I'm so scared.
So since it's quiet it's a perfect time to tell you that we actually have wild
deer in London, in particular in Richmond Park. So it's
kind of similar to this except you can't really feed them or go anywhere
near them. They're a little bit more shy. Not like
these guys. These guys here are very confident.
So I see a deer over here by itself and I'm wondering if that's the deer I
should try and approach because even if I get over there and I
manage to give it some senbei it's gonna take a long time for the
others to realize because we're right at the other end.
I think this could work. There's only one way to find out.
Do not call your friends. Just you. Please don't summon your friends. Oh
you're beautiful. He's so polite. You're so polite.
You want to come home with me to Tokyo? Oh okay now you're being a little bit rude.
I don't have any more. Is that? Yep that's my scarf. Thank you.
Are you coming with us? She's coming with us.
Come on. So I've got two more senbei crackers here
and I'm hiding them. Someone's noticed. Oh god it's over.
They're all coming. Don't be nice. Do you want my Suica card? I don't
think so. Are you planning on taking the train?
You want to be friends? She's like only if you have senbei.
You're lovely. Oh my goodness. I mean I don't want to give you all of this because
that's naughty. All right go on then. They're actually
really gentle when they take it. You want some more?
No one else has noticed. Aren't you lucky? Last piece? Okay.
Oh wait no I have to give to this one. All right
share. There you go.
They are really gentle when they're not all storming you
and they're patient you only get like one or two. They are really gentle when
they take the cracker. I don't think they'd bite.
I don't think. Except my clothes. They've bitten my clothes but they
haven't tried to bite my hands or anything.
Yeah they definitely bite your clothes so if you come here make sure that
you're wearing something. You don't mind that it gets dirty
because they will bite your clothes and pull out your clothes and stick their
heads into your pockets. But when you're actually giving them
senbei they don't really seem to want to bite your hands. I think they're
smart enough to know that you're giving them food. So one
really interesting thing that I noticed was
when you buy senbei at one of the stalls the senbei is out.
It's displayed but for some reason the deer don't try and like
steal it or take it off the store at all. So I think they're smart enough to know
that they're not allowed to do that. So I think the owners of the little
stands that sell senbei have either trained the deer or the deer
just recognize that they're not supposed to eat that.
Which I find amazing considering how crazy they could get when
you actually have senbei in your hands. Well that is it for today's video you
guys. I have had so much fun feeding the deer
here at Nara Park. I will say you definitely need to be
strategic with it though. As you saw when I walked in with the
crackers out they all completely mobbed me but then after
when I came up with a strategy it definitely
was so much more fun and the deers are actually pretty nice.
Anyway if you spend money on the crackers
so it's about 200 yen and you get a decent bunch of them
part of that money actually goes to the maintenance of the deer here at Nara
Park. So by buying the crackers not only are
you treating the deer but you're also donating towards their care
as well. Anyway thank you so much for watching today's
video. I would love to know what your thoughts are in the comment section
below. So let me know what your favorite animal
is in Japan. Thank you so much for watching and I will see you in the next
one. Bye!
