Today is a monumental day as we cement the legacy of two of the greatest teams in Blue Jays history.
Teams that brought back-to-back World Series championships to the city
and country in 1992 and 93. Blue Jays fans are you ready? All right here we go.
What an honor. I am very humbled.
I want to say to the great fans of Toronto, thank you very much. I am proud
to have been there and this is not about me. It is about all of us because we all did it together.
Game two for the White Sox and Blue Jays coming up. Shane Bieber is trying to get on some kind of a
role like a lot of his teammates. It's now or never and he's making his just his fifth start.
Remember coming back from an injury had not pinched its game seven of the World Series.
You know it's going to take a handful of starts a little better at times in that last start before
the break in San Diego but still could not get out of the fifth inning. And you're looking at Sam
Antonacci the leadoff hitter for the White Sox. He was not with the White Sox when the Blue Jays
were in Chicago in early April. He got called up made his major league debut in the middle
of April and he has been a real spark plug. He's hit on the ground his second and one hopper picked
up by Ernie Clement. He'll throw to first and Bieber's got his first out of the star. That'll
bring up Munetaka Murakami. That fastball is there but we're going to have an early challenge
in this game. Is it ball three or strike three? It is strike three. So a first strikeout for Bieber
and the Blue Jays two down and the pitch right on right to Miguel Vargas. That one laced into right
center and it'll get down off the wall. Vargas rounding first. He's headed to second. A stand
up two out double for Miguel Vargas. Yeah just another terrific approach by Vargas.
The two out RBI chance for Colson Montgomery. The three two pitch he got it. Struck him out
on the back foot slider two K's and a scoreless first for Shane Bieber. Davis Martin 29 years old
he's in his fourth big league season and the ERA is up to 341. I say up to 341 after his last start
he gave up five runs and four innings to the Red Sox. Much better earlier part of the season.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. up now. Two out space is empty. I'm some green as they say out and right
fights it off for a two out base hit. The two out hit for Guerrero and that'll bring up the D.H.
George Springer. Springer swings and tags one to right but Braden will haul this one in
and Davis Martin gets out of the first without allowing any damage. Murakami batting against
Bieber. Fourth inning starting pitchers have been good. Bieber has allowed one hit. Martin has allowed
one. A one two. Murakami with a high fly ball into the left field corner back at the wall. It's off
the top of the wall. Bouncing now in the short left field Murakami with a big turnaround second.
He'll put the brakes on and stay right there. A lead off double for the White Sox in the fourth.
That'll show you the kind of power that he has. That was a towering fly ball. He's had a chance
to get out high off the wall. That brings up Colson Montgomery. Top four nothing nothing. Sox have a
runner at second with one out. 3-1 low and Bieber issues his first walk. So two on for his nemesis Benintendi.
This has popped up. Into foul territory goes Kaz Yokomoto for the second out.
Shane Bieber looking to strand that lead off double. First and second two down.
Zero zero in the top of the fourth. His pitch to Kyle Teal. I look back and again the one two and
he got him down and in. Chased a slider from Bieber who strands a couple by picking up his
fourth strikeout of the ball game. Guerrero narrowly missing hitting his first home run here
for the Rogers Center this season. And you can see there's a little bit of come on man but there's
also probably a lot of satisfaction in having a swing like that. You know the home run power. Maybe
I took a little bit of his power away with the jacket he put on me. Here's George Springer who
caught your ceremonial first pitch up the middle and that's going to get through for a base hit
and it'll score Guerrero with the first run of the ball game.
And George Springer coming through with the hit up the middle and it might be Vlad.
This is just a ground ball but just past the reach of Montgomery and inner center field
that gets the Blue Jays on the board first. Shane Bieber back out there for the fifth.
Braden Montgomery. There's a bouncer inside the bag at third. It'll get into the left field corner.
Jose Lajer sends Montgomery to second. He's got a stand up double second straight inning. The
White Sox have led off the frame with a two base hit and they have three hits all double so far
in this game. Got to turn that into something. Can't keep letting them off the hook. Peters the
batter. Ground ball to the right side. Backhanded by Guerrero. The throw to Bieber. A close play.
They get Peters but he moves the runner to third. With a runner at third one out and the number nine
hitter Chase Midroth at the plate and the 0-2. Swing and a miss. He got him two down. Got him on
a slider. Shane Bieber has five k's in there two down. But again a tough hitter with the plate
right now in Sam Antonacci over two. Ground ball up the middle. Jimenez has it. One to first in time
and Bieber pitches around a lead off double. And with two on and one out Ernie Clement is
looking to drive in a run and extend his eight game hit streak. 1-2 offer. Popped up left side.
Colson Montgomery will haul it in. Two outs and Nathan Lucas will bat here looking for his first
trip to the base paths today. He's 0-2 with a strikeout swinging and a ground out to third.
Martin offers. Murakami will pick it up and step on first. An excellent job by Davis Martin to get
out of trouble. 1-0 ballgame. Runner on first. No outs and Miguel Vargas up the pitch is tapped
back to the mound. Bieber's on it. Throws to second for one. Clement to first. Double play.
1-4-3 and Ernie Clement had to adjust and then jump throw over the runner stretching and tossing
to turn it. Makes a perfect throw to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. for two very quick outs here in the
sixth inning. Bieber looking to get through six frames. No runs allowed right now. Two down that'll
bring up Colson Montgomery. And a full count on Montgomery and he got him. Bieber gets him to swing
over the top of a slider. Strikeout number six on the afternoon and it is six very impressive
scoreless innings for Shane Bieber here today. John Schneider turning it over in the bullpen to Jeff
Hoffman. Well it's lined up for the Blue Jays with Hoffman potentially Rodgers and Varlin but this is
a tight game with no room for error. A long hold here by Hoffman and a ground ball pulled sharply.
A sliding stop. Clement on to first in time. In time for the out making a nice play in shallow right
to make it a scoreless inning for Jeff Hoffman. He pitches around a leadoff walk to the Blue Jays
take a one nothing lead into the seventh inning stretch. Here is a guy who has worked a lot of
eighth innings for the Blue Jays this year. Right hander Tyler Rodgers. Tyler pitching in his 46th
game of the season. All very good numbers both lefties and righties and he's been on a nice roll.
And that is a sneaky way to get the tying run on here to start the eighth inning. Yeah not ideal
for Tyler Rodgers and the Blue Jays but beautiful bunt from Chase Midroth. And now they will run one
of the fastest players in all of baseball for Midroth. Luis Angel Acuna is into the game.
Runner goes. Pitch is taken outside to throw down the tag and they got him. Alejandro Kirk
throws out Luis Angel Acuna at second. That is a big big play. Well a great hold by Rodgers and
this is how you control a running game. Mix up your holds give your catcher a chance. Alejandro
comes up and he throws a strike. Ninth inning here one nothing Blue Jays trying to snap a three
game losing streak. Here's Louis Varland. Fresh off an all-star appearance. And now a fastball
shot back to the mound. Underhand toss to first. One down. Here's Colson Montgomery. Got him. Two
down. Such good break on that curveball and when hitters have to gear up for 99 and 100 this is
sharp and late breaking. Two down. Here's Andrew Benintendi who hits a fly ball to right field.
Not deep at all. Here comes Nathan Lucas and the Blue Jays will win it. One nothing. The final
score in this one is they win on back-to-back World Series day in Toronto. Yeah it was a great
day for the Toronto Blue Jays overall. Shane Bieber was great. The bullpen was fantastic.
And how about George Springer and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. combining for the only run in this
ball game. If the Blue Jays are going to make the World Series they need those two
guys to start producing and that's what they did today.
