AI GeneratedPresident Donald Trump delivered a controversial primetime address alleging widespread electoral fraud and accusing China of the largest compromise of election data in history. While Trump claims the current system is insecure and calls for urgent adjustments, Democrats dismiss these claims as baseless attempts to sow mistrust ahead of the crucial midterm elections.
US President Donald Trump has made a primetime address to repeat unproven claims of widespread
electoral fraud, putting the blame squarely on China as the reason he lost the 2020 election.
The address so controversial, major American TV networks refused to carry it live.
Our US correspondent Catherine Firkin breaks it down.
Well President Trump has been warning about election interference for a long time and
of course he famously denied the result of the 2020 election when Joe Biden won, despite
the fact there was no evidence of that election being rigged.
But this is the first time he's used a national address to discuss the issue of election security
and he says adjustments must be made.
Every American deserves to know that when they cast their vote, that vote will be counted
accurately in a system and that is to make that system secure.
One where cheating and interference are not just difficult, but virtually impossible.
Unfortunately the system we have today falls catastrophically short of that standard.
Announcing the declassification of intelligence documents, President Trump went on to accuse
China of stealing voter information in what he called the largest compromise of election
data in history.
That information includes names, addresses, phone numbers, political party preferences
and other sensitive data that would be needed to register to vote and engage in other nefarious
activities.
And that's not all.
According to the President, US sources helped cover up this breach.
Yet those responsible for sounding the alarm instead kept the information secret and hidden.
Democrats say the accusations are nothing more than an attempt to sow mistrust in US
elections.
Donald, you've been trying this schtick for six years.
Only your little coterie of sycophants still believes these lies.
No one else.
Now all of this comes less than four months out from the crucial midterm elections and
with President Trump currently suffering dire approval ratings, he'll need more than election
security to guarantee a win.
If the Democrats do win the midterms, they could regain control of Congress.
And if they do, they'll almost certainly relaunch impeachment proceedings against Trump, reopening
a whole host of legal troubles that the President almost certainly had hoped were behind him.
