Built in 1634 by King I Gusti Agung Putu of the Mengwi Kingdom, Taman Ayun Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage site known as the "Temple of the Garden on the Water." It served as the royal family’s main ancestral shrine and a unifying symbol for the region's people.
The temple's name roughly translates to "beautiful garden." Historically, King I Gusti Agung Putu established it as both a royal family temple and a place of worship for the surrounding communities, saving them from having to travel to Bali's larger, distant mountain temples.
The complex is celebrated for its sophisticated architecture, which incorporates traditional Balinese multi-tiered shrines (meru) and features subtle Chinese artistic influences. Surrounded by a wide, peaceful moat and lush lotus ponds, the grounds are divided into four progressively elevated, concentric courtyards. These terraced courtyards reflect the Balinese Hindu cosmos, with the innermost and highest courtyard acting as the most sacred space for ancestral spirits and deities. After centuries as the crown jewel of the Mengwi Empire, the temple underwent a massive restoration in 1937. In recognition of its cultural significance and breathtaking design, it was officially designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012. Today, it remains an active, revered site for local Hindus and one of Bali's most well-preserved historical landmarks.
