Hi friends welcome back to our weekly garden walk and talks
This week i'm so excited to share with you that all of our eastern moon lilies are in bloom
These are brand new eastern moon lilies
So they're much shorter than the ones that you're going to see in the main flower walk today because I just planted them last fall
But over the course of the next two years, they are going to reach at least six to even seven feet tall
And it's just going to be a wall of gorgeous lilies back here in the rose garden and just in time
Because the roses are taking a break. And so i'm really dependent on these lilies
And also the sunflowers to carry us through until the next round of roses
Really hits its stride
Let's take a look at another
gorgeous planting
of eastern moon lilies
Oh my
The fragrance is powerful, but it's pleasant
I love the maroon on the exterior of the petals
Beautiful white interior
glowing yellow center
gorgeous brown pollen
This is one of my favorite lilies
We'll head over around here
And I can show you we have a little bit of dara in bloom
Oh, here's a good one
Isn't that lovely?
The bees are just loving this serenthi major
And you can see they're going to seed now
Here's the seed right there
I just flipped this bed from rosella's dream lilies
To dahlias and a little bit of yarrow and you can see I have a lot more space in that bed
I also just flipped a bed that was filled with silt lilies to dahlias and angelonia
This bed is just hitting its stride
This is marble arch salvia
Beautiful purple brachs
This pink flower here is sapenaria
The white flower is called orlea
And then right behind this sapenaria
We have some straw flower
This one I think is silvery rose
I have to check my seeds in the basement
Lots of beautiful light pinks and vibrant pinks
This bed is filled with dahlias
Lysianthus and amimagus and it's not really in bloom at the moment
Strawberry lemonade sunflowers
Probably another week on this lysianthus
So let's take a look at the book nook now
All of the incredible hydrangeas
Are in full bloom
I just recently changed out the flowers that were in the henry studio pots
They originally had cascading hydrangeas
and violas
And I just wanted a perennial that would attract the hummingbirds and I also wanted to add in some cut flowers
So in the tallest ones, I have a pink nicotiana a mexican bush sage
We have a pinkie pie agostachy
And then a trailing ivy geranium
We've got some straw flower and then to disguise the foliage of straw flower. I added in some purple
ornamental peppers
I have white geraniums on all our side tables
I'm excited to see how these trailing geraniums fill in
I just popped three into these large pots and i'm not sure if I needed more than that
But here we have the potomac lavender snapdragons
And I paired those with some invincible spirit 2 hydrangeas
And some dara
We've got some new lighting in the garden
And i'm really trying to get better with protecting myself from the sun
So I do have this sun hat from terrain that i've been trying to wear
That's how the book nook is looking
You can see that the nigella has sprouted and I think it will be in bloom next week
Now we're in the main flower walk
And this is where we have some eastern moon lily bulbs that I believe i've had in the garden for probably about seven years
And I think they have to be seven feet tall
That one shorter one that's going over is the regal lily
And if I could do it over again, I wouldn't plant any regal lilies and I would only plant
eastern moon
Eastern moon stays in bloom so much longer. It has a stronger stem a thicker stem
It's taller
And it just has more going on with that maroon on the exterior of the petals
I stuck with a pink purple white and lime green color palette this year
I love this sublime hydrangea
This one stays lime green. Oh right on cue
Grace is drinking from the fountain. I'm telling you guys she waits until I turn this camera on to do this
Really beautiful
Some are more of a dusty pink
Others are a vibrant pink
Lady's mantle is still blooming
along with our roseanne geraniums
Such a wonderful time of year
Always doing grass repair
You know how it goes with the dog
More eastern moon lilies
You know what? Maybe they're more like eight feet tall
They're floral giants, that's for sure
I've decided not to harvest any of the QIS larkspur this year because I'd like them to go to seed
And I'd like that seed to just be sprinkled all throughout the garden
I do have it in pockets near our stone rug
But it's just such a wonderful cut flower
And I would really like to have more
Our large hosta that we got from my parents old garden is in bloom
The amsonia is a beautiful
lime green
Gatsby gal oakleaf hydrangea
And it looks like next week we're going to have some dahlias in bloom
And I forgot to tell you what I did with the dahlias this year
So in the main flower walk I have all of my purple dahlias
Over in the rose garden. We have all of our orange dahlias
One-of-a-kind dahlias in a wide range of colors are located in the raised bed gardens
And in the driveway garden, we have all of the wonderful
pink dahlias
so
Lots to look forward to
The hydrangea annex is filling in nicely
We have invincibel ruby
Incrediball
I'm fairly certain that we planted this bare root astilbe together
two years ago
And it's just starting to come into bloom, but it's going to be lovely
And it really does well here
Under the cousa dogwood tree. There's a couple different varieties. This one is mighty pip
And it's already bloomed but I do think I have some mighty pip over in the hydrangea room
It's still looking fairly good
So let's head over there now
Now look at this. I just filmed a hydrangea tour
Maybe five days ago
This is invincibel lace
It's been really hot and also dry and windy
But it's already turned from pink to green
So this is invincibel lace
Which was pink in that last video and now it doesn't look too different
from hoss halo
But the blooms are smaller
And they're going to be this green color
for the remainder of the growing season
A lot of people ask me about the hydrangea that we've propagated
Many years ago. It's right here
It only has one bloom on it
And I can show you the mother plant when we get over to the driveway garden
Now we arrive at my favorite room in the house
the hydrangea room
beautiful pinks
Lovely moths
creamy whites
A hint of lime green
Primarily smooth hydrangeas in this garden
I believe I have two maybe three panicle hydrangeas
But this garden is really a celebration
Of our native smooth hydrangea
Mini mavet
limetta
Here's mighty pip right here
invincibel spirit too
Hoss halo always is filled with pollinators
Here's one of our panicle hydrangeas
invincibel spirit here in the distance
And then invincibel ruby is lining hummingbird way
invincibel ruby is really nice if you want a smooth hydrangea
That stays pink for a long time and doesn't get too big
That's the one I would recommend for small spaces
I suppose that this incredible hydrangea is slightly obstructing the view
towards the library
But that's all right
And you know what? I think I need friends is a stronger focal point coming out of hummingbird way
It's nice to have the stone rug here
But i'm just not getting a focal point for some reason and i'm thinking what we might need to do
Is two more larger pots a grouping of three pots right here
with maybe coordinating dahlias
Let me know what you think about that
But this is how the backyard is looking
in late june
Now let's head over
to the driveway garden
Come on, gracie. Where are you at?
Hey princess you want to lead the way?
Sorry friends. I've just got my gardening tools and my coffee out and about today
Had to stake up some more lilies
And there's always snips around
See more eastern moon lilies right here
Americana white geraniums and the pots
And you know what friends they are going brown pretty quickly on me
They're very sensitive in terms of water
They really don't want to get wet. Do they?
Well, I probably picked the wrong geranium
For someone who lives in a wet climate
live and learn right
Storm-proof hydrangeas
around the bistro garden
This is a stone that I found in our front yard when I was creating this garden last year
Now our house was built in 1944, I believe
So I don't know what happened in 1968, but I found that buried
In the front yard
And isn't it so much fun to see what popped up in the bistro garden?
This plant is a wonderful cut flower. Hey grace
And it's called jewels of opar. It's not in bloom yet, but it has this wonderful succulent green foliage
It's going to branch out
But I love that lime green color in the bistro and I love that. I didn't have to plant it
Last week in the driveway garden
We had pink flight and rosella's dream in full bloom. Sorry if you can hear grace in the background. She wants to come out
Had to put her inside for a second
This week we have purple prince and gaucho blooming
So here's a look at purple prince
This is an ot lily with subtle
pleasant fragrance
And then right here we have gaucho lily
Which is a big white oriental lily with a lovely raspberry center
and nice freckling
Let me take you over here and i'll show you where the mother plant is for that hydrangea
This hydrangea was here when we moved in
And all I did was take a tip cutting from this hydrangea
I cut right below a node right here
Stuck it into water and within about a month it had produced roots
And once it produced roots at that point, I stuck it in potting soil
And if you're interested in watching a video on propagating hydrangeas
I do have one and i'll go ahead and pop that in the description section down below
Before I say goodbye for the day. I want to fill you in on another garden project that we're going to be working on this fall
Last year I told you that there were some areas in my backyard that I didn't like showing and that I was kind of
embarrassed about
And the one area that I want to tackle this year is the area that you see when you immediately enter our property
Now where I was standing previously is what I normally show you
But here's what this area actually looks like when you pull into the property
It's not a very welcoming view is it now we have a lot of necessary things going on
We have power running over to the flower stand. This area is really compacted because there's also
Trenching and pipes and electrical work that goes back to the garden library
And so I don't really want to dig down in this area
But I do want to create a beautiful stone pathway that leads you to this gate
And then we can dig a little bit right here
And right here because the trench runs basically where the grass isn't growing and then back through grace's garden and over to the library
But we're going to create some beautiful beds
right here
Fill those probably primarily with evergreens
I think I want to stick with evergreens over here and then whatever we plant along the side here
Needs to be able to be run over with our recycling and trash bins. So we're going to tackle this area
That well, it doesn't look very nice now, but hopefully by next year it will look beautiful
So thanks so much for joining me for today's garden walk and talk and I will see you back here next week
I think it's going to be a really hot one next week. It looks like a couple days
in the hundreds
See you soon friends
Bye
