The King County Fair is officially underway and you can check out great food, fun rides,
awesome shows and you can even check out some animals. FOX 13's Abby Oconey got a sneak peek.
Hi everybody. One of the highlights of the King County Fair is of course the animals and we are
previewing some of the very fun competitions and highlighting all of the work that goes into them.
I want to bring in now President and Vice President of a local 4-H club in Maple Valley.
We've got Dylan and Ariana. Thank you so much for joining us. Hey we're joined by some of your
animals. Tell me about the goat competition. Okay so this is Luigi and that's Mario and they are
pack goats. Some things we do to prepare them for competitions is in my backyard we walk over little
seesaws because for the competition they have to go through a trail course including going over
water, backing around obstacles and then staying parked. Yeah. Yeah we touch them, desensitize them,
play with their feet. I honestly can't believe how laid back and chill they are right now.
How challenging is it to do the training? Not very. They're pretty chill. This is their
sixth year at fair so they're pretty used to it. They know the routine.
Yeah. Yeah. So Ariana what's your mindset going into the weekend and your highlights too?
Okay so my mindset is to have lots of caffeine and to just do my best with my animals you know.
We work really hard with them throughout the year and just kind of just doing what we know
is really important. You know you can't expect a whole lot from them because it's stressful for
them, it's stressful for us. So just kind of just making sure that they're calm, they're safe,
they're healthy is always my biggest priority. Some of the preparations that we do, as Dylan
said earlier, we do like seesaws, we do music, we do lots of different things. This goat was actually
shaved before fair too. The haircut is looking fabulous by the way. He looks very nice today for
fair. Hopefully he'll keep looking nice throughout fair. But yeah that's great. Lots of stuff
happens. Hey you guys also work with rabbits. What goes into that? So with the rabbits,
rabbits is actually my main project. I do 4-H rabbits and market rabbits and throughout my
rabbits I feed water. Dylan and I are actually national competitors with rabbits as well
so that's we don't only do fairs, we also travel around the country doing rabbit shows.
This year we're going to Reno and it's just it's really fun you know. We obviously they're
very hard to do. Lots of care goes into them. We spend a lot of hours outside in our barns
taking care of our rabbits, working with them, handling them, posing them constantly. Breeding
is definitely a really big part of rabbits too. So just making sure that they're being well taken
care of and all that stuff and school is also a really big part of that too. Oh there's so much
learning that goes into 4-H and rabbits and but it's definitely worth it. Well y'all have been
working so hard for so long. It's wonderful to see your animals so well behaved. Good luck with
the competitions this weekend. Ariana and Dylan here with 4-H in Maple Valley reporting in Enumclaw
Abbey Oconee Fox 13 News. So David why are they so tame? That's what I was trying to ask. Because
that's the wild rabbits you have in your yard. Those are raised from little baby rabbits. They're
nurtured and loved and cared for and then they snuggle with you. They're the best snugglers.
Should not see the bunny did not even move. I said wow what a great pet. You didn't do 4-H as a kid did you?
Oh you were neglected. Thank you David. Nothing like taking care of an animal. Thank you so much for that.
