Well, you know the saying don't mess with Texas, but mother nature didn't get
that memo. Major storms hitting the state, leading to water rescues,
flooding and at least one tornado. Fox weather's Brandi Campbell gives us a
look at what folks there are dealing with. Well, we're taking you to the
Texas Hill Country where residents tell me they haven't seen flooding like this
in over a decade. We're here in Bernie, Texas, where you can see water is just
taking over this road. This is usually a stream that looks nothing like this,
but it is flowing strong here. And this is just one example of what they've
seen here due to Wednesday's flooding. You can't. We can't go down the short
block anymore for a while.
Yeah, we gotta go. I mean, so that work and I was trying to get home before all
of the road closures hit, but it was already bad enough to where I had to
just park somewhere and wait it out. South Central Texas has been in the
bull's eye for heavy rain this week, triggering catastrophic flooding in
several communities in a 48 hour time span. Bernie, Texas, had one of the
higher rain totals after storms dumped more than 15 inches of rain runoff sent
local creeks and streams raging across major roads. Cibolo Creek, which flows
right through the heart of town, crested just under 23 ft. To put that
into perspective, it's nearly six times higher than its average depth of just
under four ft from over the last two weeks. Vehicles were seen submerged
even as water went down. The city says a few rescues were performed to save
people that were stranded. Resident Don Fonza shared this from his
neighborhood where they couldn't leave until the water receded. Drains are so
so full that the water had backed up on this back street. I really wasn't
taking that serious until I just started to walk around the neighborhood
and seeing we can't even get out of our neighborhood. So it's very important to
follow those warnings. I've never seen it to this extent before.
Again, I've only been here since 2014. So maybe the older residents might have
experienced something else. Meanwhile, a tornado impacted san Antonio. You can
see damage at this busy shopping center called the rim. The entrance of this
movie theater took a hit. City officials say this nearby apartment complex
suffered the worst damage after part of his roof was ripped off. Thankfully, no
injuries or deaths have been reported in san Antonio, and the same goes for
Bernie. Now, due to the level of flooding seen here, the mayor did sign
a disaster declaration saying they will be requesting help during and after
this flood event. For now, in Bernie Texas, I am Brandi Campbell Fox weather.
Okay, that's what they're dealing with now. More than 2.5 people are in the
path of these storms, and there have been about 40 water rescues already.
