Vovinam Phan Don Team Competition: Do We Still Need It?
Do we still need the Vovinam Phan Don Team Competition?
In this video, I share my personal opinion about this Vovinam competition category, its original purpose, and why I believe it may no longer represent the technical principles of Vovinam in the best way.
I understand why this category was introduced. It gave developing Vovinam countries the opportunity to participate in a team competition using a limited number of basic counterattack techniques.
But today, Vovinam has developed significantly around the world.
So, is this category still necessary?
My main concern is about the way Phan Don techniques are performed in competition.
Phản Đòn are counterattack and defensive techniques. In my opinion, they should represent realistic situations, with realistic movements, timing and reactions.
The beauty of Vovinam Phan Don is their simplicity. When trained correctly, these techniques can be effective and, in some cases, can even be applied in fighting.
But when the main focus becomes synchronization and showmanship, do we risk losing their real meaning?
Vovinam is based on the balance between hard and soft — Cương and Nhu. I believe this principle should always be visible in the execution of every technique.
Personally, I would prefer this type of team competition to be judged more on realism, effectiveness and technical application, and less on synchronization and spectacular movements.
⚠️ IMPORTANT CLARIFICATION
The athletes shown in this video are only used to represent the competition category.
They are excellent, high-level athletes who gave very good performances, and I congratulate them on their skills.
My criticism is not directed at the athletes or the teams.
My criticism is only about the competition category itself.
This is only my personal opinion.
You may completely disagree with me — and that is absolutely fine.
👇 What do you think?
Do you like this Vovinam competition category?
Should it remain as it is?
Should it change?
Or should it be removed from international competitions?
