Welcome back to Avalanche Digest.
I'm Copeland Jones.
We've got a lot to talk about today.
Lysel signed an extension the other day.
Kel McCarr extension talks have gone a little quiet
and Patrick Kane is no longer an option
for the Avs it seems.
Today we're gonna talk a lot about Kel McCarr.
I know it's the big ticket right now.
Everyone's anticipating the contract extension.
We've also got Arturi Lekanen to talk about
a little bit here and there.
But the Avs have gone really quiet
since the end of the free agency frenzy.
And Kel McCarr's contract is still,
there's no updates.
There's nothing being said about anything.
It's a little concerning.
So let's dive right into things.
But before we do,

Alrighty, so we're gonna move into
our talks about Kel McCarr.
So Kel McCarr's extension,
this is from Elliott Friedman
on their 32 Thoughts podcast.
I'll bet you he does not max out
that they'll go to him
and they'll be like,
we can pay you whatever you want.
I think he takes a big number,
but I don't think he takes everything he can.
This is something we've known for a while
and I don't think he's gonna take the max contract,
but I think there's one big thing
that's kinda holding out in the contract talks
and that's Quinn Hughes.
I think Kel McCarr might be looking to see
if Quinn Hughes is gonna make a move
for a big contract
and he's gonna think,
Quinn Hughes gets $18 million,
I need to be making more than him
because I'm better than him,
which is true.
Kel McCarr's better than Quinn Hughes,
I know I might get flack for that in the comments,
sue me, so what?
But Kel McCarr probably,
if Quinn Hughes signs for 18,
we'll probably see Kel McCarr go for 18.5.
I think he's just gonna be a little bit higher than him,
kinda like when McKinnon took 12.5 or 12.6,
which was just higher than McDavid at the time
and I think it still is higher than McDavid
because McDavid took a team-friendly deal,
but now here's what we saw from the rumor report
about Patrick Kane.
Patrick Kane has narrowed it down to Buffalo and Chicago.
It's a tough decision for him.
I didn't really understand
the Patrick Kane hype for the Avalanche.
I didn't see how it was gonna work.
I mean, we could probably have moved somebody,
maybe Arturi Lekkonen,
but also Patrick Kane isn't young anymore,
so I just didn't see how that was feasibly gonna work
for this team and we'll see how it goes down the line.
Patrick Kane may sign with his old team again,
but I think the Avs team is pretty much set
for the time being and on that topic,
Lysell re-signed the other day.
I believe it was on the 13th.
He signed a one-year deal for $850,000.
Now, that's going to put us just over the cap right now.
I imagine the Avs are probably gonna move
some lower-cap hit guys off of the payroll,
but right now, our lineup is looking like
Lekkonen, McKinnon, Natchez, Schwartz,
Nelson, Landeskog, Kelly, Kadri, Waugh.
I believe Kadri and Nelson might honestly be switched.
I think Kadri plays at a little bit
of a better center role than Nelson.
Nelson, I think, would be a good winger
if he was able to transition,
but he is pretty solid at face-off,
so I guess not moving him there makes a lot of sense.
Fourth line, we got Leroux, Svechkov, and O'Connor,
and then Brinley, Jolson, and Lysell in the press box.
So, here's what was said on the fourth period website
about the Kahle-McCarr situation.
This is about Minnesota Wild,
so let's make this a little bit bigger for y'all.
The Minnesota Wild are weighing their options,
expecting a three- or five-year term when the dust settles,
but we may not necessarily see it come in soon
after the free agency doors swing open.
By the way, this was shown right before free agency started.
This website was made available like June 29th or whatever,
but all this stuff still reigns very true.
One extension we certainly will not see on July 1st
is Kahle-McCarr's next contract with the Avalanche.
According to the fourth period website,
it's also saying,
the Carr and the Avalanche just started dialogue
on a new deal and serious negotiations haven't even begun.
And I imagine, since this was before July 1st,
I imagine they have started talking about it,
but the fact that we haven't gotten any update whatsoever
probably means that they aren't even close,
so they're not really focused on it right now.
Kahle-McCarr may be focusing on his off-season right now,
or they may not really even be in touch that much.
Joe Sackett will get a deal done.
I just, as a fan, it may seem a little uncomfortable
not knowing exactly when or how
that extension is gonna be signed,
but there is zero concern from either side.
They said it will get done.
That's a big hope for us.
We'll see how that goes.
And here's another tweet.
This was a little bit more recently on the 14th,
saying, a deal with Quinn Hughes isn't really close,
but everyone's saying a three-year,
$18 million contract is a layup,
so why is it not done yet or close?
What's the holdup?
Friedman even said a three-year, $18 million contract
was his prediction for Quinn Hughes.
And if we get a three-year, $18 million contract,
I think we're gonna get a Kahle-McCarr,
six, seven, eight-year, $18.5 million contract.
It's gonna take a big chunk out of our cap space,
but we do have the room for next season right now.
Right now, we're looking at $32 million
in cap space for next season,
but we've still got a sign lacking in
if we are going to go down that route.
So we'll see exactly how that goes.
Today, they just announced the opening night
for the Colorado Avalanche.
Hockey's gonna be coming a lot sooner
than we anticipated.
September 30th at home.
It's a Wednesday.
We're starting right in the,
I believe there's like four or five teams
that are playing in September.
We are one of them at home against the LA Kings.
I saw some posts earlier about why in the world
the house playing the Kings again,
that we've had opening night against the Kings
three out of the last four seasons.
I think the only time we didn't,
I believe it was Chicago, the one season,
it was like right after we won the cup.
If I'm mistaken, that may have just been the home opener,
but season opener is September 30th
against the LA Kings at home, 8 p.m. mountain time.
That's gonna be late for me.
Oh my goodness.
I'm in Houston right now.
So we'll see how that goes.
Season's kind of coming up.
We've got two full months left
until regular season starts.
Preseason's probably starting in about a month,
month and a half.
I don't remember exactly the dates for those,
but hockey is on its way back already.
It feels like the season just ended,
but we're almost there.
I look forward to this next season.
We'll see how this Avs roster
really holds together coming up.
And the full scheduled release will be tomorrow.
So look out for a video tomorrow.
Tomorrow we'll have that ready for all of you
that don't forget to subscribe.
