I really just had so much sympathy for her.
This is somebody that really, really wants to create an honest life for herself
and it feels like she's thwarted at every single turn.
I was intrigued by her moral journey and, yeah, I just had a really big heart for her.
I mean, I don't hope that people steal from children and set things on fire.
That's not necessarily my hope for young girls.
But I do hope that they understand that they have the strongest voice in writing their own story
and it doesn't matter what other people tell you that you are.
It's whatever you believe that you are that matters.
You know, every woman I've ever met in my whole life
has had this moment in their life where they had to save themselves,
whether it's from a bad relationship or a financial hardship or some sort of disastrous situation.
So when I read a character like this, like in Marissa's book,
this character, Lucky, is just the master of her own destiny
and she overcomes such incredible odds to survive.
And that's what I really connected to when I read the book for the first time.
