Another developing story here today.
Houston Texans co-founder and senior chair Janice McNair has passed away at the age of
89.
Fox26houston.com's Randy Wallace reports on her legacy of generosity.
Janice and her husband Bob moved to Houston in 1960.
They raised four children and gave hundreds of millions of dollars back to their community.
The McNairs were generous philanthropists, making education and medical research the
cornerstones of their charitable giving.
In total, they contributed more than half a billion dollars to charity through their
various foundations.
When Bob had died in 2018 after a long battle with skin cancer, they had given more than
$500 million to charity and then it got close to 750 million.
And they were very giving, and Janice always has done that, so has her son, Cal, and his
family.
And I'll tell you what, she's gonna be missed by so many people, her family, her friends,
her fans.
What do you remember about Janice?
Just how caring and loving she was, almost like a grandmother figure for a lot of the
players, made it feel welcome each and every day you seen her passing by.
She would stop and talk to you, just always had just great joy about herself.
She and Mr. McNair were seminal in their giving towards the university.
They've helped us in so many different ways, both with building construction, programmatic
support.
And then when we launched football in the NCAA Division I in 2012, they made a gift
that allowed us to build our stadium on campus.
They just were so impactful for our university in so many ways.
When I had my fundraiser benefiting the hurricane that came to hit my hometown, Louisiana, and
she drove her own car up there, delivered a check to come and support.
She just always has a smile on her face, the sweetest lady.
Terribly sad news to hear of her passing.
We have a statement from Texans head coach D'Amico Ryan's that reads in part, we shared
the same vision of bringing the organization to new heights, and I will continue to work
every day to accomplish that goal.
My thoughts and prayers are with Cal, Hannah, and their family during this time.
