European nations agree to form an anti-ballistic missile coalition.
Kiev is also calling on them to start producing a Ukrainian defense system,
partly to shield the country until its own Patriot missiles are ready for deployment.
NTD's international correspondent Arjen Pasdar has the latest.
European leaders are meeting in France on Monday, discussing how to defend the continent from
ballistic missiles. Ten European nations, including Germany, France, Italy, the UK,
Ukraine and others, announced they're forming an integrated anti-ballistic missile coalition.
A statement by the French presidency reads that the goal is to establish
common operational requirements, joint technical working groups, clear governance mechanisms
and a roadmap towards the coalition's first operational capabilities.
French President Emmanuel Macron says one of the reasons such a coalition is needed
is the threat posed by Russia, which often attacks Ukraine using ballistic missiles.
Also at the meeting in France, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is calling
on European nations to work together in producing the Ukrainian missile defense
system called Freya. Zelensky says Europe needs more anti-ballistic defense.
Together we can build such a system. I hope that within the next 12 months,
we will see Freya up and running. This way you can't complain that we're not giving them enough.
President Trump recently allowed Ukraine to produce Patriot defense systems,
but experts say it might take up to 18 months for Ukraine to have its own missiles.
Macron says France is now also allowing Ukraine to produce French-designed cruise missiles,
precision-guided bombs and air defense interceptor missiles.
We have finalized licensing arrangements which will enable these capabilities to
be produced much more rapidly with our Ukrainian friends and on Ukrainian soil.
This marks the first time France is agreeing to allow Ukraine to start production of French
military capabilities. The move comes as Ukraine agrees to buy fighter jets from France.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov comments on Monday's meeting in France.
This is a coalition of warmongers. This is a group of countries that doesn't want peace,
wants the war to continue and is deluded into believing that it's possible to
inflict a strategic defeat on our country. He added that Russia will closely monitor
the outcome of the meeting. Arien Pastar, NTD News.
