Intermediate Chinese HSK 3 Comprehensible Input- Chinese Traditional Stand-up Comedy

Xiàngsheng is a traditional form of Chinese comedy that’s still very popular today, even though the Western style of stand‑up has taken over more of the market in recent years. Compared with Western stand‑up, xiangsheng follows many more rules and conventions. One day, I hope you get to follow some xiangsheng jokes as well —though they’re full of cultural references woven into the humor, and they can be quite funny, and carry some true essence of the language.
I also talk about the most well‑known foreigner in China, Dashan. He was the first foreigner to truly master this traditional comedic art, and he became astonishingly good at it. His Chinese sounds incredibly natural, with a clear and distinctive Beijing accent. He still tours today, doing both xiangsheng and standup. What surprised me even more is his passion for classical Chinese poetry and his skill in performance reading.
I have see some bits of him on YouTube lately too.
He has become a legend in China — the first foreigner to speak Chinese publicly at such a high level in public spotlight, and someone who has genuinely helped bridge cultures since the 90s.
Happy watching maybe my last video with good lighting.
