Let's get started.
When most people think of the Thai royal family, one name comes to mind immediately.
King Maha Vajiralongkorn, known as Rama X.
Over the years, his life has been associated with numerous scandals and controversies, attracting constant attention from the media and the public.
But his younger sister, Chulibhorn, is often seen in a very different light.
She is beloved across Thailand, and is known as a woman who has dedicated much of her life to serving the Thai people.
But behind this image lies a life filled with more pain and heartbreak than most people will ever know.
Princess Chulibhorn was born on July 4, 1957 in Bangkok, the youngest daughter of King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit.
From a very young age, she faced serious health problems.
She was diagnosed with congenital hemophilia, a serious blood disorder that made every injury dangerous.
She also suffered from severe facial paralysis, and some of her facial muscles were beyond her control.
These conditions were believed to have been caused by the close blood relationship between her parents, who were distant cousins.
In addition, she had almost no friends during her childhood.
Even though she was a princess, no children wanted to play with her.
Despite this, Princess Chulibhorn excelled in her studies and consistently ranked at the top of her class.
After graduating from Kasetsart University in 1979 with a Bachelor of Science in Organic Chemistry, with the highest honors,
she continued her studies at Mahidol University, one of Thailand's most prestigious research institutions.
In 1985, she earned her doctorate in chemistry.
She was the first princess in the history of the Thai royal family to ever receive a doctorate.
Despite her many achievements, one part of her life remained painfully empty—love.
Because of her congenital health conditions, many noblemen were discouraged from dating her,
and she struggled to find someone who would choose her for who she was.
Eventually, she met a man named Virayud Tishyasarin.
He was not a nobleman, but a commoner.
Some reports say he was an officer in the Royal Thai Air Force, and that they met during a lecture.
Other reports say he was a member of her royal guard.
Whatever the exact circumstances, the princess fell deeply in love with him, and their relationship developed quickly.
They eventually decided to marry.
However, the marriage faced opposition from her parents, King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit.
Later, it was revealed that Virayud had already been married.
Surprisingly, the princess did not mind, and was willing to wait for him to divorce his wife and come to her.
Virayud eventually did so.
King Bhumibol, despite his reservations, despite the differences in their rank and backgrounds, gave his blessing.
And he went even further.
Knowing that Thai royal custom required a princess who married a commoner to give up her royal title,
he broke that precedent entirely.
He granted his youngest daughter special permission to keep her title and her royal privileges even after the marriage.
On January 7, 1982, Princess Chulabhorn married Virayud in a magnificent ceremony at the Grand Palace in Bangkok.
Chulabhorn wore gold brocade lined with burnt orange silk.
Virayud wore his white officer's uniform.
In the early years of their marriage, the couple appeared happy.
In October 1982, they welcomed their first daughter, Princess Reba.
Two years later, in 1984, their second daughter, Princess Dita, was born.
As time passed, however, the marriage reportedly began to deteriorate.
Chulabhorn and Virayud were said to argue almost every day.
Because Virayud had limited education, while Chulabhorn was a highly educated and elite woman,
the two reportedly held very different views on many subjects, and disagreements over everyday matters became frequent.
Virayud's personality also reportedly changed over time.
He had believed that marrying into the royal family would earn him the king's favor and help him advance quickly in his official career.
However, after the marriage, his career remained largely unchanged.
Aside from being respectfully addressed as Prince Consort by the palace staff, the marriage appeared to bring him few practical benefits.
After a long period of frustration, Virayud began to behave abusively during disagreements.
He was also said to spend nights away from home seeking entertainment,
and when Princess Chulabhorn complained about his behavior, he physically assaulted her.
Princess Chulabhorn endured these difficulties for years and repeatedly attempted to preserve the marriage.
However, she was ultimately unable to restore the relationship.
Heartbroken, she chose to divorce Virayud and raise their two daughters on her own.
In October 1996, in a videotaped interview broadcast on national television, she told the truth.
We really cannot stay together anymore. He is hot-tempered and does not try to understand.
Most of all, he uses physical abuse. I have always tried to reconcile with him.
But when it reached the point of physical abuse, we could not remain together.
This relationship caused Chulabhorn great pain.
She was unable to recover from the psychological trauma for a long time after the divorce.
Several years later, she met Chaishan Loshararenkul, a chemistry professor from Chulalongkorn University.
Unlike her previous relationship, this connection was based on shared interests,
and for a time many people remembered her as appearing happier and smiling more frequently.
However, fate seemed determined to continue testing Chulabhorn.
After a period of passionate romance, the professor suddenly disappeared from her life without warning.
It was later revealed that he had become a monk.
Despite the heartbreak she endured, Princess Chulabhorn did not allow personal pain to define the rest of her life.
Instead, she devoted herself to serving the people of Thailand.
She established the Chulabhorn Foundation with the goal of improving quality of life through science and technology.
After recognizing the high rate of cancer in Thailand,
she also helped establish a cancer research and treatment center to support medical research and improve access to care for patients.
Over the years, Princess Chulabhorn has faced several serious health conditions,
including systemic lupus, erythematosus, an autoimmune disease that can affect many parts of the body.
As her health declined, her mobility became increasingly limited.
Today, at the age of 69, she relies on a wheelchair for mobility and requires assistance when walking.
Despite these challenges, she has continued to visit slums and welfare homes in Thailand,
donating money and supplies to people in need and offering support to countless individuals.
Her work has helped many Thai people regain hope and courage in difficult circumstances.
After the divorce, her former husband began a new chapter in his life.
Public records indicate that he remarried in 1997 and later moved to Virginia, United States, where he operates a Thai restaurant.
He is also reported to maintain a good relationship with his two daughters.
Princess Chulabhorn's story reminds us that suffering, pain, and heartbreak do not have to define a person's entire life.
What often matters most is how a person responds to those challenges and chooses to move forward.
