It's a passion that runs deep inside and these WISD boys and girls are at the annual
summer golf camp at Tierra Santa to sharpen their skills. Character building, teamwork,
patience, golf you have to practice a lot of patience. It all comes after spending time
putting, chipping and driving. What they realize is some other skills are used,
skills they've already learned in the classroom. It's a combination of both math and science.
We got about 150 from here to go across that lake. A perfect scenario is at hole number three. Jason
is out there with other campers analyzing and strategizing how they're going to drive the ball
over this lake and on the green. Usually I have a really bad slice so I'll probably aim it left
over here because I have a slice that heads right but this time I hit a draw so it's like still
kind of fair and I could play it. Before they could even think about accomplishing that they
must get the concept of driving the ball. That's what Joni Deleon hopes to master by the end of
camp. It's a math equation so let's say that I want it to hit far away so then I do the equation
so then if I want to hit it far away I need to get a good grip and hit really good. Jeremiah
has improved his stroke using geometry and physics. This his second camp he's learned the
sport is about angles and force especially on the green. I kind of like saw like it took a little
bit like down it's going down here a little bit so like I'm like okay so I'm not gonna hit it like
hard but like not too soft. I feel good like it was like my first time like hole in one. Jesse
Connor is on his way to seventh grade and a player we'll be hearing about in the future.
Having played golf since the age of three he's got the mechanics and fundamentals down
but there is one area he's working on before he competes at the middle school level. Great shot.
I'm improving on like more of my emotions when I'm like get down on myself half the time patience
and try not to like get in my head all the time because when you hit a bad shot you just get up
your head and then you play bad the rest of the course. Nevertheless it's a fun-filled experience
that gives our students an outlet until the bell rings for a new school year. I just appreciate
Tierra Santa and our great coaches and tutors for for providing this community building for
all these kids. For KOSTV, I'm Mike Gonzalez.
