Now let's talk a little bit about how values provide us with purpose. Purpose in our end
outcome is essential, but purpose in every action leading to our goals and our mission and our
vision is quintessential. Purpose is easy to see in the grand goals and the great gestures and the
overarching outcomes, but it's not as easy to see in the small steps, the tiny tasks,
the individual increments. As we infuse each step of our process with meaning and purpose,
our process, our progress can become much more rewarding and much more effective through the
process. But where does this purpose come from? How do we create and instill and infuse purpose
into our actions? Purpose, deep and meaningful purpose comes from foundational principles and
foundational core values. And these core principles and values are inherent to our
own unique individual identity, but also ubiquitous and universal to everyone.
It's an interesting juxtaposition to consider. My unique identity is tied to core principles and
values that are universal to everyone, but also unique to each individual. Let's dig a little
bit into the meaning of core values and principles. One core principles that we all share is that our
lives have meaning and purpose both to ourselves and to others. We can provide ourselves, we can
improve ourselves, better ourselves through active efforts and through actions we can uplift and
improve and support the lives of other people. There are several names, descriptions that we
could use to describe this core value. Service, selflessness, charity, etc. etc. We each have a
unique blend of the universal core foundational values from which we can draw to develop our own
individual mission and purpose. None of us is exactly the same, although we all have the potential
to be uniquely individual and to bless the lives of other people. Finding purpose in not only the
large visible outcomes and goals, but also in the seemingly invisible and mundane granular creative
choices. This purpose will infuse our efforts with energy and continue to elevate our unique endeavors.
Now values also help to provide a framework. These universal core foundational values
give us a guidebook. This guidebook has all sorts of guides in it. Guides that give us a clue as to
our purpose here and how we can have a positive impact on others. Guides that can help us to teach
what our strengths might be and what some of our weaknesses could be as well.
For many of us these core foundational values give us information that can enlighten us
as to where we came from, why we are here, and where we are going. It's important to connect
with our guide as we are endeavoring to become and to be. Without a sense for who we are and
what we are here to accomplish, we may be hard pressed to ascertain what our true purpose is
and what we can do to affect positive change in our lives and in the lives of those around us.
You could refer to this as a connecting to our higher power. My higher power is the Savior
Jesus Christ. My personal belief in Jesus Christ as my Savior and Redeemer provides me with a solid
and abiding and unyielding framework through which I have a deeper sense of self-identity
and self-worth. Not only does this understanding of who I am as a son of heavenly parents and
my connection to my eldest brother Jesus Christ provide me with identity and understanding,
but this understanding also gives me a framework on and around which I can utilize my individual
agency or choice ability to creatively become. For each of us, our individual family,
cultural, and religious beliefs may lead us to a different concept of a higher power.
Regardless of your own religious or non-religious affiliation, belief, or creed, there is within
each of us a sense of the divine, a sense of being part of something that is greater
than just our individual life experience. Draw on this sense, this belief, to assist you in
creating and to discovering your own values and core foundational beliefs. These values
will assist you as you think and refer back to them to develop a framework more like a sandbox,
and they will inspire you as you consider what your overarching keystone purpose is here
and what particular steps you need to take, what the unique action items are that are necessary
to accomplish, and what it is that you are striving to and striving for in your quest for being.
The goals we use in our efforts in being and becoming, although not requisite to be hard and
fast, necessarily require bounds and limitations. To put it painfully simply, I cannot aspire to be
as a human to become an airplane, no matter how much I want to be able to fly. I would love to be
an airplane, but because I believe that I have a divine purpose which is likely to become more and
search and serve, I have been given a physical body. My transcending my body to become an F-35
is absolutely not something that is appropriate and falls outside the realm of reasonableness.
Granted, this is a silly oversimplification, but the consideration is appropriate for our
intents and purposes. My current potential has limitations which fall within my eternal identity.
I can improve within my own individual sphere to a point. This, however, is not to say that I cannot
aspire creatively to become, through a series of disciplined goals, choices, and adaptations,
to eventually become a pilot and then utilize the F-35 to fly. Not that I really have any
dreams of doing that. The point I'm trying to make is that we, each of us, has a framework within
which we must remain. As we remain within this framework, this sandbox, our portion of the
sandbox increases as we make appropriate choices to choose our own adventure. I think once we dig
deeply into our comparison, the comparison of our individual value systems or worldviews,
we will discover that our deeply held values across cultures and personal worldviews are
inherently similar to a dramatic degree.
