CHIRICAHUA MOUNTAINS
The Chiricahua Mountains have been on our list to explore for years, and we finally made it!

We did something a little different for this video: we created some of the music specifically for this trip using AI-generated music tools. It has been really fun to take the feeling of a place the mountain roads, sky island forests, birds, rock formations, and sunset hikes and try to turn that into poetry, melody, and instruments. It’s a surprisingly creative process, and honestly, harder than you might think to get something that feels right!

Tucked away in southeast Arizona is one of the most overlooked landscapes in the U.S. — a place of narrow mountain roads, rare wildlife, sky island forests, and rock formations that feel almost imaginary.
In this adventure, we enter the Chiricahua Mountains from the east side near Portal, Arizona, and take a rugged forest road up and over the mountains toward Chiricahua National Monument. Along the way, we camp high in the mountains, explore quiet trails, listen for birds, dodge low branches, check the RV roof for damage, and experience one of the most unique “sky island” ecosystems in the Southwest.
Then we head into Chiricahua National Monument, where the landscape turns into a true wonderland of rocks. We hike through Echo Canyon, Heart of Rocks, Big Balanced Rock, the Grotto, and Faraway Ranch, learning how volcanic ash, erosion, and time created these incredible hoodoos, spires, balanced rocks, and stone passageways.
We also get lucky with wildlife sightings, including a coati, unique birds, a giant spider, and plenty of signs that this remote corner of Arizona is very much alive.
This was one of those places that completely surprised us — rugged, beautiful, quiet, strange, and absolutely worth the effort to reach.
