Hey guys, welcome back to my channel. My name is Olga and today we have the very first Lisbon
food tour. I will be joined by my local friend Bia and we are going to have so much fun on our
itinerary today. Pifanhas, grilled sardines, pastel de bacalhau, pastel de nata and genginhas.
Let's get into it. So this is my friend Bia. Say hi. Hello guys. She is local and she's
going to tell us a bit about the history and the background of the traditional foods that we are
going to try. The first stop is pifanhas. What can you tell us about pifanhas, Bia?
So pifanhas are a pretty common plate in Portugal during the sancho poplares
and during family gatherings. It can be fried or grilled. I prefer the grilled version.
It's really good. It's like fried meat in bread and it's like one of my favorite plates. Let me
be honest. We usually eat it with mustard which I don't really like but that's life
and like I love it. I love it so much. We almost get to run over. That's how the sandwich looks like.
Usually different places have different sauces. This one is pretty spicy so I put it on a side
but let's give it a try. Ready? Yeah. Cheers.
Even though it's pork it's not greasy or fatty at all. I'm pretty sure it's made in broth so it's
very light and delicious. What's your rating? Let's say from one to ten. Okay like um I'm used
to a different type of pifanhas but I would give this one a solid 8 out of 10. It's really good.
The bread is really crispy. It's not like dry so 8 out of 10. I really really enjoyed it.
I haven't tried any other pifanhas so I think I would also stick with 8 out of 10. Pretty
delicious. Our next stop is grilled sardines. Sardines are extremely popular in Portugal
especially during the summer. What can you tell us about this dish? I'm not a big fan of fish
I'm going to be honest with you but like they're known for being small and really really pricey
by the way. Okay that's an interesting perspective. Let's give them a try. I have tried sardines before
just from the store not the grilled ones and they were quite delicious. I enjoy fatty fish and I just
love fish in general. So I'm excited to see how the grilled ones are going to taste like.
We made it to the second place. Our grilled sardines with a side of salad and some potatoes.
I think they should have put more potatoes. Yeah just two potatoes but let's see how it tastes.
Bia tell us what do you think of grilled sardinas? So um even though I'm Portuguese this was my first
time trying it because as I said earlier I don't really like fish. This was really really good they
were they tasted really really good and as I said I'm not the biggest fan of fish. I give this a
solid 10 out of 10. This was really really good. What about you Olga? I liked it a lot as well. I
liked it more than regular sardines as they are not too oily. The fish was very delicious
with lemon. I give it 8.5 out of 10. Our third stop for today is pastel de bacalao
and I will tell you about this one since I learned something about Portuguese culture.
Cod is extremely popular in Portugal and even though it's not native to this land Portuguese
sailors used to go to northern Europe and salt it and that's how they transported the cod back to
Portugal. There is even a joke that there are 365 recipes for each day of the year with the fish
and we are going to try pastel de bacalao which is basically potato croquettes with this fish
and cheese. Is that correct Bia? Although the normal version of it doesn't like have cheese
on it on the recipe we're going to try with cheese. I've already tried pastel bacalao
and I really really like it. Yes so we are going to try the fancy version with cheese.
So as Bia said the regular pastel de bacalao is without the cheese
this one is with cheese and I think they are usually eaten with beer right?
These ones are really big.
I made it to the cheese part it's really delicious
it has parsley, potato so it's quite filling and yeah I like it. So I really enjoyed pastel de
bacalao with cheese I think it's so much better than without. Without it's still delicious but
with cheese I feel like the taste is more exquisite. What about you Bia? It was my first
time trying it with cheese too. As Olga said I found the flavor really exquisite too I really
enjoyed it although I preferred it without cheese. Okay well my rating is 8.5 out of 10.
What about you? Yeah I would give it a seven because I'm not that big of a lover of cheese
but I liked it I'm saying that I like it. I'm a big cheese lover so that's why for me it's
definitely 8.5 out of 10 maybe even 9 because I love cheese. And now we are moving on to
desserts finally it's pastel de nata time we are going to Mantegaria. Yeah Mantegaria Nacional
it's really really good I love it. Yes they have a few locations in Lisbon we are going to one a
little bit further so it's not as crowded. As we are moving on to a traditional Portuguese dessert
Bia what can you tell us about it? So pastel de nata it's basically a custard tart
and it has like um it's really related to conventional sweets that were most done with
with eggs since it was the the most thing that they had at the time to do sweets uh it's basically
um I don't know I don't know how to call it but it's masa folhada in Portuguese
then it goes to the oven and has like egg custard on it and it's really really good I love it so
much. If you ask a foreign person what what they know from Portugal outside of Cristian Ronaldo
they will say like pastel de nata so Portugal is really really famous for this custard tarts.
Yes and I also know a little bit of history behind it monks sold it to one place in Belém
in 1800s since they lost a founding from the government and as monks were using a lot of
egg whites to starch their clothes they were left with a lot of yolk and they decided to
make a dessert out of it also that's why there are many Portuguese desserts made of egg yolk.
Our pastel de natas and you can have them either with cinnamon or sugar
powdered sugar I like a combination of both what about you girl?
I prefer more like with cinnamon but even without either the cinnamon or the sugar they're amazing
okay let's give it a try I'm gonna give mine some sugar Bia is doing cinnamon cheers
bro even though I know the taste of this this always surprises me I love it so much
I like the thickness of it and it's not um like too sweet that's why I like that I added sugar
yes solid nine out of ten ten out of ten oh we got the first ten out of ten
like one thing that really surprises me is that I found some Portuguese people that dislike pastel
de nata even though this is the biggest symbol of our country really good guys really good
we are headed to our last stop of the day and it's ginjinhas we need to finish our
day with a sour liquor I'm excited I'm excited it's only like 2 p.m in the afternoon but
it's 5 p.m somewhere so oopsies yes so I'm excited to try cherry sour liquor there are two types of
ginjinhas you can get a regular one or you can get it in a chocolate cup today we are trying
more um upscale options of regular Portuguese cuisine so we are going to try it in a chocolate
cup and you can get it either with or without cherries I want to get it with cherry so I can
try it I've never had a cherry liquor before and even though it's traditional Portuguese liquor
we also have it in Ukraine so I'm wondering now which one was first and I'm interested why we
like both of our cultures has it anyways we are almost there are you going to get it with a cherry
or without I think without I don't like having like solid stuff in my oops yes so we're going
to have it in one of those like street carts that's how it looks they also have some that
you can take with you okay Bia is going to teach us something how to drink something let's see
pick up your cup because we're going to do it at the same time okay
and you get a free refill
I like it it's like soury can you eat a chocolate cup 10 out of 10 10 out of 10
good end of the tour and that was the food tour in Lisbon I hope you guys enjoyed it and had as
much fun as we did please let us know in the comments below if you want to see similar formats
