Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio No.1 in D minor (1839) is a glorious example of the Romanticism chamber music at its best. After reviewing the Trio, Schumann declared Mendelssohn to be "the Mozart of the nineteenth century, the most illuminating of musicians.” One of Trio’s highlights is an intimate slow movement, echoing the composer’s Songs without Words, with a contrasting middle section. Exquisite tuneful material gives each instrument a chance to shine.
