Today, two high-profile fraud cases will be back in the courtroom.
A Feeding Our Future defendant will be sentenced and a man charged in the recently unearthed housing fraud scheme is expected to change a plea.
Let's check in with Bill Keller. He has the latest on both of these stories. Bill, good morning.
Good morning, Tom and Kelly.
Well, this afternoon, one of 79 people who have been charged with stealing more than $250 million from that federal child nutrition program,
well, they will appear before a federal judge to learn their punishment.
Earlier this year, Mustafa Jama pled guilty to a single count of conspiracy to commit white money laundering.
Now, court records show that Jama and five others operated a restaurant in Rochester where they fraudulently claimed to serve meals to thousands of children every day.
Federal prosecutors are asking that he serve 16 months in prison, but his defense is asking for a sentence that does not involve time behind bars,
arguing that Jama's role in the scheme was minimal.
The 48-year-old has already forfeited nearly $240,000 in cash, along with properties in Lakeville and Ohio.
Sentencing is set for 2 o'clock this afternoon at the federal courthouse here in Minneapolis.
Now, also later this morning, one of eight people accused in the housing stabilization fraud case is expected to change his plea.
Abdi Fita Mohammed is accused of using a St. Paul company called Brilliant Minds Services LLC to submit more than $2.3 million in false claims.
Prosecutors allege that each defendant pocketed between $300,000 and $400,000 of that money.
Mohammed, who was initially pleading not guilty, is due back in court at 10 a.m. this morning to change that plea.
Ultimately, the amount of fraud within the state's housing stabilization services was so extensive that the program was permanently shut down by the Minnesota Department of Human Services.
Tom McKellie, back to you.
All right, we'll keep an eye on those two for sure.
Bill, thank you.
