Video Summary
AI GeneratedMiyu Ito secured her second gold medal of the day at the X Games Sacramento Women's Skateboard Street Best Trick competition, overcoming a previous skull fracture to demonstrate incredible resilience. Paige Hine earned silver with impressive switch skating, and Ibuki Matsumoto took bronze, contributing to a tight team competition between Sao Paulo, Tokyo, New York, and LA.
Day three rolls on here in California's state capitals.
We welcome you back to X-Games Sacramento.
It's now time for the Monster Energy Women's
Skateboard Street Best Trick.
What's happening, everybody?
B. Graham alongside my legendary partner, Emilia Brodka.
Of course, we've got Kristen V out on the course.
It was a heavy women's street contest earlier today, Emilia,
where favorite Chloe Cabell was denied a gold medal.
Can she get a gold out here at X-Games Sacramento
tonight in Best Trick?
Well, knowing Chloe, she's got a big bag of tricks.
And she loves to just go huge right off the bat.
So I wouldn't be surprised if she
was on the top spot of the podium today.
But I've already been surprised once today.
So let's see it go down.
A field of seven out here in our 20-minute jam.
Miyu Ito, what a story, earning gold earlier today
in the women's street contest.
Could she perhaps go double gold this beautiful Sunday?
She could.
I mean, I've seen some practice clips of her.
And she's definitely got some really good tricks in her bag.
But if someone else can challenge the podium here,
it's definitely Shiloh Katori.
Because this is the type of format where Shiloh shines.
She loves going out and filming tricks.
And this is similar to that.
Fewer tries, but she could definitely earn that top spot.
So Shiloh Katori, 17 years old, was an X-Games League free
agent before getting the call up earlier this week
to represent Team Tokyo.
Can she get some points for her squad?
Oh, yes.
Wow.
She's going for a shove out of the no slide.
We saw her do a no slide on a 20-stair handrail
at the SLS Takeover recently.
So she's got that trick dialed.
And then shoving out just makes it that much better.
What does 18-year-old Paige Hine have for us?
Oh, she's got a switch frontboard for us.
Heavy, right off the bat.
So here's Miyu Ito, 19 years old,
owner of two X-Games golds, three silvers,
and four appearances.
Oh, starting with a front blunt down the handrail.
I said this earlier today, but I need to say it again.
She had a slam on a back lip last year where she stuck.
And she cracked her skull open.
Yes, Gabby Macedo starting off with a solid frontboard
down the rail.
But for Miyu Ito to be sliding frontside down the handrail
as well, that just goes to show that she has mentally
conquered that incredible slam.
So the frontside blunt slide, a very similar slam
could happen.
But she doesn't seem to be thinking about it.
Ibuki Matsumoto, just 14 years old,
owner of two X-Games medals, skating for XC Sao Paulo.
Oh, kickflip frontboard.
Oh, I want to see that go down.
So Sao Paulo is in the lead right now.
And if she earns that 100 points,
that could really help them moving
into the rest of the day.
17-year-old Liz Akama skating for XC LA.
Again, the barley grind coming out forward.
We thought we were going to see that in her run.
I'm glad she saved it for best trick
because that means it's going to probably score
a little bit better since the judges hadn't seen it yet.
And that was just so well executed, such a twisty trick.
No one else is doing that.
Yeah, I was just going to say, Amelia,
what is it about that trick that the rest of the field
does either seem scared off by or just doesn't put
into their run or even best trick?
There's like a rewind aspect to it.
You know, you got to lock in and then wind yourself back out.
Five time X-Games gold medalist, Chloe Covell.
Oh, starting with the front blunt,
she's stuck and had to bail in the middle of the rail.
You know, it's pretty hot out here
and you could see the hand motion.
The wax motion.
Yeah, exactly.
She's looking for wax.
She knows that rail's sticking a little bit.
Chloe trying to get those points for XC New York
and get them back into the lead.
Here now, Shiloh.
Oh!
You know, I think she could benefit
from a little bit of wax too.
Yeah.
Yeah, with the Sacramento heat today,
the wax has long since melted off.
So here's Paige Hines' second run.
As we touch on the 17 minute mark.
As you mentioned, partner, off the top,
you know, some of these ladies had their struggles
in the street competition,
but a lot of their skating here now,
Miyu Ito drops in for her second run.
Yes, there it is.
The frontside blunt slide.
But so many of their,
so much of their skateboarding is really patented
for something like a best trick contest.
Shiloh, especially.
As we take another look,
let's head out to Kristen Beat.
Kristen.
You mentioned the fractured skull
that Miyu Ito sustained a year ago today.
She was super emotional in her interview earlier
when she earned that gold medal
and it was put around her neck.
She was even crying.
Imagine if she's able to go two for two today.
Guys, just an emotional young skater
who has come back from so much devastation
early on in her career.
I still can't imagine a fractured skull
and a year from that point coming back.
Yeah, it was such a terrifying crash
in Salt Lake City,
a practice leading up to that contest.
And to see her back here winning gold a year later
is just nothing short of extraordinary.
And she does have an opportunity for double gold out here.
And she's currently in the lead as you see.
But all that can change on one single attempt.
That is the beauty of the best trick format.
Here's Liz Akama sitting in that silver medal spot.
Oh, she might've been going for a barley to fakie,
I'm going to assume.
But already on her first try,
she's looking like she's in a good spot.
Chloe Covell, she fell on that first attempt
on the front blunt.
What does she got for us here?
Oh, she's got a front blunt big spin.
So Chloe did that trick last week in Rome
on a really long rail, like sat on it
and then did the big spin out.
Definitely a really technical trick to do.
We see that Miu's in first place
with just doing the basic version of that trick,
just the front side blunt slide.
Oh, Shiloh still in search of that first X Games medal.
Still just 17 years old here, page high.
Ooh, she's very close to that front side board slide.
I mean, anytime you're skating switch,
it's your non-dominant footing.
It's like learning to skate all over again
and she's doing it down a massive handrail.
Our current leader.
Ooh, okay, so she might be doing something
very similar to Chloe.
We did see her try a front blunt shove in her run earlier.
Maybe that's what she's going for here.
Having the benefit of that make being in first place
allows Ito the opportunity to do things like that
and deviate a little bit for potential upgrades.
So Gabby Mazzetto, I think going for a back 180.
Right, Ibuki trying to get that kickflip front board.
Here's Liz Akama.
Ooh, going for a hurricane.
I love to see it, Brando.
I've not seen that done in this field.
Such a rad trick.
Similar in positioning to the barley,
but you get your back truck.
Right, the hyper focus from Chloe Cavell.
Ooh.
So with that trick, you can get away with catching it
and kind of dragging the rest of it on the ground,
but this concrete is pretty sticky.
So you have to be really precise.
Chloe was double gold last year.
Can she earn a single gold out here this weekend
as Shiloh Katori still trying to dial that in?
Paige Hine got the call up to represent XC New York.
Yes, switch front board.
That is huge.
GMs take note.
This is a free agent.
Shocking that she did not get drafted.
She's so dominant in switch skating in the women's field.
Yeah, that's a really good point.
She did get called up for XC New York for this one,
but after she will go back to the free agency pool,
she certainly is deserving to be on a roster.
And she puts her name up in a podium position
all the way up into that silver medal spot.
Oh, Miu.
Yep, she's going for the front blunt shove.
You've gotta be really quick with that shove
or the big spin out
because it looks like the rail is a bit steep.
Oh.
So Gabby Mazzetto has such a great style,
just the way that she will bone out her ollies.
And here you see her boning out that back 180.
It's gonna look beautiful when she rolls away from it.
So Ibuki still trying to put this down, and she does.
So well done too.
That's definitely gonna get her up on the podium.
I'm not sure which spot the judges are gonna pick,
but flipping your board onto a massive handrail,
that is no joke.
Yeah, look where she lands on that rail.
Proper.
And the vibes keep coming for Team Sao Paulo,
currently in the overall standings lead.
Nearing 11 minutes to skate with.
And we have a new leader, Matsumoto takes over first place.
Wow, so Ibuki and Team Sao Paulo
are now in the gold medal position.
That could obviously change right here,
right now with Chloe Cobell.
Oh, going for that front lump big spin.
So when you're doing a trick out of a slider grind,
the difficulty level is a bit higher
because you have to get your feet in position
during a trick, as opposed to riding up to a trick
with your feet already in that kickflip position
to catch it in the front board.
So that could definitely knock on the door for first place.
Shiloh Katori, still looking for that make
here on run number five,
as we're hitting the midway point of Best Trick.
Oh, so close to that.
And you just have to speak to the endurance
and just the commitment that it takes
to hunk yourself over the biggest feature on this course,
time and time again, Amelia.
You're just slamming into concrete
in the heat in front of so many people.
Wow, switch front 50 for Paige on that massive round rail.
I cannot express how terrifying that is.
I mean, so much could go wrong.
You gotta get both trucks cleared.
A round rail can kind of feel
a little bit wiggly sometimes.
And she did it so well, Brando.
GM Steve Rodriguez knows a thing or two about skateboarders.
Obviously Chloe Covell was the number one overall pick,
but how about this free agent call up just a few days ago,
Paige Hine representing HNYC.
And we have a new leader, Paige Hine takes over first place.
That rail is no joke.
That is a 12 stair handrail.
We're in the double digits here with that stair set.
So it's New York, Sao Paulo, and LA as your top three,
or excuse me, Tokyo, NY, Sao Paulo, and Tokyo.
Hine, Matsumoto, and Ito respectively.
Well, right now Sao Paulo is in the lead.
Back flip, so if Ibuki leapfrogs Paige,
that'll just put them further in the lead.
But New York can try to catch up with this event.
Oh, the hurricane.
Wait, I wanna see a different angle of that.
There it is.
Yep, so you see the, oh, okay, that's what happened.
That's why I wanted to see it.
So the hurricane kind of slipped
in the board slide at the end there,
which you might think, oh, two tricks in one.
But the judges might think, no, no,
you just kind of slipped out of it.
It doesn't work that way.
So Liz Akama still knocking on podium's door.
Chloe Covell, this crowd at Cal Expo is ready to erupt
if she can put this trick down.
Oh, what do you think's going on right now?
Well, judging by her expression, she is in her head.
And we've seen in previous contests,
Chloe gets in her head, she's her own worst enemy.
So here's Shiloh Katori.
For more on Shiloh, let's head back over to Kristen.
I noticed Shiloh holding the left side of her hips.
Guys, she's in pain.
She said the skateboard hit the side of her body.
There are welts all over her side.
It's all red, but guys, she is not tapping out.
Shiloh's a warrior.
She gets in the gritty streets on the daily,
slamming into asphalt, much worse than concrete.
Yeah, I don't know that there's someone
that spends more time in the streets
in this field than Shiloh Katori.
Absolutely.
So our current leader, Paige Heine.
Oh, going for the switch ollie too.
The switch ollie over the 12 stair.
That's heavy.
Oh me, oh my.
So Miyu Ito, who was leading this thing early,
is now in that bronze medal spot.
Front blunt shove.
Miyu certainly positioning herself
for two medals on the weekend.
She'd love for both of them to be gold.
Gabby, knock on podium's door.
Ooh, she could definitely do the most stylish
back 180 down the stair set, that's for sure.
We're gonna see it.
For Sao Paulo teammate, Ibuki Matsumoto.
Maybe, maybe that's a preview.
Maybe we'll see a kickflip backflip.
Or, she did the trick that she already wanted to.
We'll see.
Definitely a really gnarly trick to do on a handrail,
but not gonna knock on the podium this time.
So Liz Akama.
Also a backside lip slide.
Just the back lip train going on.
She's trying to get XTLA on the board.
We take one more look.
Definitely did that, with so much style.
Chloe Cavell, winning this event last year.
She's currently on the outside,
looking in on run number six.
Oh, there we go.
She had more of the rotation from the board that time,
before it looked like she was kind of going to catch it
and turn it the rest of the way on the ground.
So she's figuring it out.
It's certainly the closest she's been all day.
She'll hopefully get a couple more of attempts.
Hey, we may be in Sacramento now,
but this time next month,
it'll be time for the XGL Championship in New Orleans.
Buy your tickets now, scan that QR code,
and come join us in New Orleans in July.
So Shiloh Katori,
who has been battling this trick all afternoon.
Can she do it on run seven?
Oh, so close to that.
Yeah, it's kind of an abrupt ending to that rail.
So anytime you're doing anything out of a trick,
you just gotta move really fast and be ready for it.
Yes, the switch ollie.
Paige is in such a great position right now, Amelia.
Already with a couple of makes in that first place spot.
She's gotta be feeling really good
about not only earning her first X Games medal,
but getting New York some more points.
Oh, and what an incredible comeback she's having.
Wow.
All things Team Tokyo out on the street course today.
All things Mio Ito.
Take another look.
Oh, just so precise on that shove out.
So clean.
Just graduated from high school in the spring.
Now 19 years old.
Could she potentially earn a double gold?
It's looking that way, Amelia.
Mio takes over first place.
What a beautiful comeback story this is.
No hesitation, no fear.
Mio Ito.
So Gabby sitting in fifth place.
I think she maybe didn't believe
that she was going to do it so well
and was not ready for the roll away,
but hopefully she'll get another crack at it.
Two minute warning.
Here in the Monster Energy Women's Skateboard Street
best trick Ibuki.
So I'm thinking Ibuki already did the trick
that she wanted to do,
and she's just giving us a back lip demo.
I'm not sure.
She looks like she's trying to figure something out.
You know, she might just be comfortable
in that bronze medal spot.
But here's Liz Akama, who's been bumped out of the podium.
Isn't quite ready on that roll up.
She's just outside of medal contention,
sitting in fourth.
I'm surprised she didn't go back for a cleaner hurricane.
Oh!
Is she going 270 frontboard?
Maybe so.
That would be pretty impressive to see.
Chloe Cavell's seventh run.
Yet to land this trick.
Does that change right here, right now?
Just last week on a much longer rail.
Oh!
The thing about doing it on a longer rail, though,
is you kind of have more time to prepare
for the big spin out.
So this one, with it being so abrupt,
you just gotta move so fast.
Looks like we'll get one final run
from each skateboarder here in best trick.
Here's Shiloh.
Oh!
That would definitely be an X Games first,
getting the shove out of the no-slide.
But as you said, it's such a tough out,
and you just run out of real estate.
Paige Hine, who just got first place taken away from her.
Just clipping the end of that stair set
on the switch ollie.
I know, maybe it doesn't seem as impressive
as hitting the handrail, but that's heavy,
clearing that many stairs switch.
Miyu going for maybe a kickflip frontboard,
maybe a kickflip front blunt.
But I think she's feeling pretty good.
So this will be Gabby's last run.
Oh!
I love the way that, just the way that she pops in itself,
just has so much style to it.
I just really want to see her roll away from that.
Ibuki Matsumoto, sitting in that bronze medal spot.
You know what, I was hoping she would try that.
I wish she would have spent the last two tries trying it,
but such a terrifying trick to commit to.
She knew she only wanted to try it once.
Unfortunately, not her day.
Mizukama.
Yeah, the 270 switch frontboard.
That would have definitely been a contender.
I would have loved to see it.
So the only skater between Miyu Ito's double gold
here at X Games Sacramento
is our defending gold medalist, Chloe Cavell.
This will be the last run of the contest.
And with that, the comeback story continues for Miyu Ito.
Oh, so unfortunate for Chloe,
but that was a gnarly trick to throw on that handrail.
And today the streets belong to Miyu Ito,
her second gold medal of X Games Sacramento.
Miyu, have yourself a day.
After an impressive performance in street earlier today,
she comes correct and claims gold in best trick, Amelia.
And she executed that trick so perfectly,
landing bolts, rolling away,
looking like she even surprised her own self.
Love to see it.
Let's head down to Kristen, who's with our gold medalist.
You may have been dreaming about now coming to fruition.
How good does it feel to now earn two gold medals
a year separated from a fractured skull
being here at X Games Sacramento?
You're now a two-time X Games gold medalist.
I'm really happy. Thank you, X Games.
How did you develop your trick?
I practiced enough so I can have the make percentage higher.
Incredible discipline.
Congratulations, two gold medals in one day, Miyu Ito.
What a moment for that young lady.
It's incredible what that 19-year-old was able to overcome
after that terrifying crash in Salt Lake City last year
to come here and earn gold,
not once but twice in the same day.
And congratulations to Paige Hine
earning her first ever X Games medal,
a silver getting 80 for Team New York
and Ibuki Matsumoto rounding out our top three.
With that, Sao Paulo has advanced their lead,
so they're still the team to beat in these next couple events.
So look at our current standings.
XC Sao Paulo leading the way with 920 points.
XC Tokyo right behind them with 860.
New York 830 and XC LA 630 points.
There's still obviously a couple more contests
to go throughout the weekend, so that can all shift.
But that gives you a really beautiful look
at what's gone down so far at X Games Sacramento.
Stop one of the Moon Pei XGL.
We've still got Arisa Tru yet to skate for XC Tokyo.
So this battle between them and Sao Paulo is going to continue.
What a day for the women on the streets.
But when it mattered most, Miyu Ito goes gold.
