J.K. Rowling’s Transphobic World

This video takes the long road through J.K. Rowling, transphobia, media laundering, and the strange little machinery that turns bigotry into respectable opinion writing. Starting with Kevin Can **** Himself, I take a look at the lingering impacts of abusive relationships that can result in trauma. From there, I dig into a New York Times opinion piece defending Rowling by leaning heavily on other anti-trans voices, including E.J. Rosetta, and ask a simple question: if the defense of J.K. Rowling requires a chorus of people already committed to attacking trans rights, what exactly is being defended?

The answer becomes clearer through Rowling’s own public fights: targeting a trans woman over women’s bathrooms, objecting to Marks & Spencer hiring trans people, and repeatedly framing trans existence as a threat to women’s safety, language, institutions, and public space. I conclude that this is a political project aimed at making trans people impossible to accommodate, impossible to employ, impossible to protect, and eventually impossible to publicly exist. This video argues that J.K. Rowling is not just transphobic, but opening new fronts in the war on transgender life.
