Global National: July 3, 2026 | Alberta moves toward pipeline dreams becoming reality
#GlobalNews
Alberta has just taken a major step towards making its pipeline dreams come true. On Thursday night, Premier Danielle Smith unveiled her government's pitch to build a pipeline to the West Coast through southern B.C. The proposal submitted to the federal government's Major Projects Office would follow the same route as the Trans Mountain pipeline from Edmonton. And like TMX, it would be built with a lot of taxpayer dollars. Heather Yourex-West reports.
Federal opposition parties are slamming the pipeline proposal for different reasons. The Conservatives wanted a pipeline through northern B.C. which would get the oil to market faster. Meanwhile, the NDP and Bloc Quebecois are condemning the plan to spend taxpayers dollars to the benefit of big oil polluters. But how do ordinary Canadians feel? David Akin has obtained internal government polling through access to information.
Its been about four months since he was killed in a U.S.-Israeli strike, but the funeral for Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei has only now begun after his death at the start of the war. Leaders from across the Middle East and around the world have arrived for the multi-day memorial. As Redmond Shannon reports, there’s still no sign of his successor.
Canada’s prime minister is set to meet his fellow NATO leaders in Turkey next week. Mark Carney recently announced Canada’s goal of spending four per cent of GDP on defence by the end of the decade. To achieve that, many billions of dollars will need to be spent and some economists warn tax increases may be inevitable. As Mackenzie Gray reports, the government is resisting calls to provide details on how the money will be spent.
