In this tutorial, I'm walking through how to paint expressive, loose trees in an alpine landscape without getting bogged down in detail.

When you've got multiple trees, elevation, and a river all competing for attention, it's easy to overcomplicate things. But the same principle applies: tonal values and bold brushwork are what make trees sing.

This painting features a mountain landscape with broadleaf and scattered trees across dramatic terrain. I'm showing how to simplify the foliage masses, handle the trees in relation to the landscape, and keep the whole thing loose and painterly.
