____________________
The legislation promotes a single Chinese national identity, expands ideological education,
restricts the use of minority languages, and requires parents to teach children loyalty to
the Chinese Communist Party. Here are details of China's ethnic unity promotion law.
In March of this year, China's so-called National People's Congress passed an ethnic unity
promotion law. Now some context here, China's National People's Congress is not like the one
in the U.S. The so-called representatives aren't elected by the people, they answer directly to
the Chinese Communist Party. The new law mandates the use of Mandarin Chinese and simplified
characters in ethnic regions. That basically stipulates at the national level that minority
languages may not be used as the primary language of instruction in schools. It goes further,
the law requires parents to guide their children to identify with the Chinese Communist Party.
The law also pushes for the so-called ethnic integration, that is moving minority groups
into Han Chinese areas and vice versa. Analysts say the measure could lead to the breakup of
communities where ethnic minorities have traditionally lived together. And then there's
religion. The law requires that all faiths ensure cynicization. That means that believers
must put the party above their God. And the ripples of this law are reaching far beyond
mainland China. It says it's the legal duty of citizens in Hong Kong and Macau to uphold this
idea of ethnic unity. It also takes aim at Taiwan, calling for deeper integration to make people on
the island feel more quote Chinese. One article by Human Rights Watch states that organizations
and individuals outside China can be held legally responsible if authorities determine
they have undermined national unity or promoted ethnic division.
