Western Massachusetts residents and their pets face extreme heat this week, with dangerous pavement temperatures posing a significant risk to animals.
Western Massachusetts residents will not be the only ones feeling the
extreme heat this week. Pets are also at risk and that's especially during
walks outside when pavement temperatures heat up. 22 News storm
team meteorologist Alexa Bianco is live to explain what pet owners need to
know. Yes, Christina and Ciara. Of course, when we think of the
temperature, we think of actual air temperature, but we don't think about
the pavement that gets even hotter when in direct sunlight. Now, one of the
biggest hidden dangers is what's happening beneath their paws on hot
summer days. Pavement temperatures can soar far above the actual air
temperature hot enough to cause burns in just minutes. I spoke to a local on
how he keeps his dog cool from the heat.
I just try to keep them cool and give plenty of water. They take care of
themselves for the most part. If they get too hot, they just find a cool
place to get underneath his coach or the somewhere where it's cool. If they
can provide themselves with shade, they'll do it. Some signs and symptoms
to watch out for if a dog has heat stroke is excessive painting, fast
heart rate, reddened gums, high body temperature, vomiting, diarrhea with or
without blood weakness and seizures. Now heading into the holiday weekend,
it's, of course, important to be extra cautious with the extreme heat working
for you. Storm team meteorologist Alexa Bianco.
