What came before time began?

The Big Bang is often described as the beginning of the universe. But that simple phrase hides one of the deepest mysteries in science. If space, time, matter and energy were once compressed into an incredibly hot and dense early state, then what existed before it? Was there another universe? A quantum vacuum? A cosmic bounce?
