I'm back from South Africa; caring for Gabriel and Abigail while searching for my new project location, and decided to post an old video of James The Cheetah while I process all the new video to come. I met James some years back and the one thing I noticed and liked right away is that he is ALWAYS purring. He really loves people and you cannot get close to him and not hear him purring. Cheetahs don't purr all the time but I don't know when James turns his purr off. James purring all the time provided some opportunity to record a male cheetahs purr.

The video features a heartwarming interaction with James, a 13-year-old retired breeding African male cheetah. The narrator highlights James's affectionate nature, specifically his constant purring and desire for social bonding, while emphasizing the importance of respecting the animal's autonomy and maintaining strict hygiene during encounters.
I go visit my buddy James again. I always like visiting him. Just making my rounds for the
animals that like interaction, like attention. So James is one of them. Remember James? The big,
beautiful, friendly, close-sitting, snuggling, cheek-rubbing, grooming, thumb-suckling,
African male cheetah? If you're new to my channel, then here he is. He was an active
breeder at this project, but never fathered any cubs. James is now 13 years old and retired from
the breeding program. Besides the many admirable traits to love about James, his purr is one of
the most special. And it's not the quality or power of his purr, it's the fact that he purrs
all the time. You can't get close to him and not hear him purring. It's because he's been
cared for really well his entire life and loves people. James provides a great opportunity to
record a cheetah's purr. This is Eden, a female cheetah. Both male and female cheetahs purr.
A cat's purr represents contentment and announces to those around them that their intentions are
friendly. Just like our human voices are unique per individual, so is a cheetah's purr. Now there's
not much to get James off this mound. He's in the sun, he's relaxed. I don't know if I can get him
down. I don't know if he'll come down for me. James is a really nice cheetah. I don't want to say
buddy. I like respecting these animals too. I can go up there and pet James if I wanted to, but
this is it. To me, this is his private mound. I don't want to disturb him. It's just me, you know.
These cheetahs aren't like dogs, you know. They don't do things to please you. They do things to
please themselves. So I always like having them come to me. It's actually a lot more special too.
When these animals trust and like you enough to come to you for attention, it's just more rewarding
for both of you. So watch what happens if I lay down. If I sit down over here, he might come over.
I'm sitting down now. Hey, it's just not enticing enough. What is? Here he comes.
Here he comes. For the fastest land animal on the planet, that's mighty slow. That's about how slow he
comes to you down these mountains. So that's nice. If he wants interaction, it's his choice.
Hey, James. Hey, James. Hey, buddy. Hey, buddy. Come say hello. So a groom is worth coming down
off this mound for. Good old-fashioned goatee grooming. Got a close-up. Look at that.
Big, big, beautiful cheetah. I love James. Grooming not only keeps coalition friends clean,
it also serves as a social bonding behavior. It's pleasurable to these cheetahs, a source
of enrichment, and why I allow it. I couldn't get so close. I can't keep up. It's right on top of you.
Oh, buddy. As a precaution to their health and safety, I maintain superior hygiene before
encountering them, sanitizing my face, beard, hands, and arms, washing and rinse before every
encounter. I waited for James to finish his greeting groom and settle down so I can record
his purring. You done, buddy? Yes, lay down. Yes, lay down. There's debate whether or not a cat's purr
is conscious or unconscious, meaning controlled willfully or just a stimulus response to an
emotion. Whether it's controlled or not, it doesn't change the fact that James purrs based on the
proximity of people. Whether he sees or senses you or not, as long as he thinks about you, he's purring
or at least until he gets tired and falls asleep. There's many reasons to love a cheetah's purr
or any cat's purr. The emotional attachment to you is just one more.
