Inside the quietest townhouse in New York (House tour)
Inside New York's quietest townhouse, a restored 1860s residence in Greenwich Village reveals a meticulously designed retreat, secluded from the hustle and bustle of city life. Designed by Elizabeth Roberts Architects, the West 11th Townhouse balances heritage and sophistication, transforming an iconic building into a tranquil family home, shaped by natural light, light materials, and open spaces.
Located in one of Manhattan's first historic neighborhoods, the house sits amidst a multi-tiered streetscape of 19th and early 20th-century architecture. While the original structure dates back to 1860, decades of renovations have significantly altered the building, including its conversion into multi-family apartments. Instead of restoring the facade to its original Italian style, the exterior was restored to its 1920s form – a significant chapter in the neighborhood's artistic development. The result is a New York-inspired building that both complies with regulations and preserves cultural memory.
