Learning to See Unlearning to Paint Six Centuries of European Painting
A journey through six hundred years of European painting, from Giotto in the Scrovegni Chapel to the main hall of Sotheby's in New York. Line, volume, anatomy, light and colour — the language Europe learned workshop by workshop — and the paths that language took when, from the twentieth century onwards, part of art decided to dismantle what had been learned.
The video names the masters indispensable to trace the thread of the story: Giotto, Masaccio, Van Eyck, Dürer, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, Titian, Parmigianino, El Greco, Caravaggio, Rubens, Van Dyck, Velázquez, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Artemisia Gentileschi, Watteau, Fragonard, Boucher, David, Ingres, Géricault, Delacroix, Goya, Turner, Friedrich, Courbet, Millet, Daumier, Gérôme, Fortuny, John Singer Sargent, Sorolla, Manet, Monet, Cézanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Picasso, Malevich, Duchamp, Kandinsky, Mondrian, Dalí, Pollock, Warhol, Rothko, Lucian Freud, Jenny Saville and Maurizio Cattelan. The list does not pretend to be exhaustive — six centuries told in fifteen minutes, with unavoidable omissions — but to leave enough traceability for the journey to be followed end to end.
A piece for those who want to see the complete arc in one sitting, with verifiable data and the intention of returning to the viewer not a judgement, but a way of looking.
