Jazmin is an incredibly talented young player with aspirations of playing at the highest levels of the game.
In this forehand session, we focused on one of the biggest differences between good players and elite players: creating offense through positioning and timing, not just swing speed.
A huge part of that starts with hunting the peak of the bounce.
When players consistently arrive early, get their hips organized, and position themselves around the ideal contact point, the forehand becomes far more explosive without feeling forced.
We worked on: • Hunting the peak of the bounce to create more aggressive court positioning • Getting the hips oriented earlier to the incoming ball • Creating better spacing so the arm can stay loose and athletic • Using the ground more effectively to generate effortless power • Building a forehand that can hold up under the speed of the modern game
The best forehands in the world aren't just powerful.
They're efficient.
The earlier you organize your body and arrive to the ball, the easier it becomes to accelerate, create pressure, and dictate points.
Coach Michael provides a high-performance tennis clinic for Jasmine, focusing on transforming her forehand from a technical tool into a dominant weapon. The session emphasizes movement efficiency, the \"peak of bounce\" philosophy, and strategic targeting to transition from a defensive mindset to an aggressive, professional style of play.
You want to dominate with your forehand.
The forehand is the centerpiece of the modern game.
And if you don't have a great one, you're going to get left behind.
You need to know how to attack with the forehand.
You need to know how to defend with the forehand.
You definitely need to know how to get inside out on that forehand.
And you need to know all the different targetings that come along with different positions on
the court.
Hey, I'm Coach Michael.
I'm a high performance coach here in San Diego, California, and I've worked with thousands
of high level players.
And I'm here to share that lifetime of knowledge with you.
Today we have Jasmine.
If you haven't checked out her other videos, check them out.
She's a young player, but she's awesome.
And she wants to be a pro.
She's training to be a professional.
I'm going to push you back, push you out, push you up.
I'm sure you've done some of this before, right?
We're going to look at her forehand today.
I love her forehand.
It's beautiful.
We had three days together, and the forehand's the one technical piece that we're not going
to make too many changes to.
You feel it.
You love your forehand, right?
I do.
Great.
So we're not going to touch it.
But the way that she moves to attack and the way she moves to defend are inefficient.
First off, just peak and bounce guiding everything.
Peak and bounce guiding our retreat also, right?
How far back do we go?
She's got an over rotation of her hips and an under rotation of her hips.
And it's limiting her movement into those parts of the court.
You got your short ball.
Every short ball you got, what'd you do?
I shuffled.
You shuffled.
That problem stems from an inefficiency in her overall base and the cadence of her bounce.
What do I want from you?
Wide.
I want wide and more energetic from the bounce.
She also needs to work on her inside out ball and work a ton on attacking with that forehand.
So then I'm going to go into a little bit more dramatic rotational setup here to get
the juice that I want.
She's also a little unsure of all the targeting that she needs.
And I'm going to open up all the different targets that we need for the different parts
of the court.
I want to work it down these channels.
I want to come up here.
I want to take the left road.
It's going to be an awesome lesson with Jasmine.
Thank you for being here.
Let's go.
Come over here for the forehand.
So I'll warm you up before we get into it.
I'm going to push you back, push you out, push you up.
I'm sure you've done some of this before, right?
Just there, there, there.
Is this a chance to warm up and also to kind of let me watch you in all the directions?
Okay.
Here we go.
Ready.
Cool.
You look good.
A couple more times through that.
Top it.
Even if my...
I know you're just getting warmed up.
So just warm yourself up.
It don't matter.
You feel...
You love your forehand, right?
I do.
Great.
We're not going to touch it.
Let's not change the technique.
Yesterday, I had a little conversation with you, right?
First off, just peak of bounce guiding everything.
Peak of bounce guiding our retreat also, right?
How far back do we go?
As far as the top tells you to go.
There can be some of this in your forehand, right?
It can have sort of like this arcing loopiness that I think comes from the days of you probably
taking more drops and creating more shapes and that the eventual line of the swing is
to be here.
More directly through with the frame and less shaping.
It's a minor thing.
Again, I don't want to do any technique with you today on the forehand.
Probably not.
Actually, you never know with me.
But that's just like a little artistic aesthetic is that over time, I want to see more penetration
through with the racket frame and a little bit less of this mentality, a little bit more
of the hand turning over the ball.
It's good right now.
That's just me.
Basically, it's me also saying things that so tomorrow when we make our big list of things
to take home with you, I want to just make sure that that's still in my mind.
Your movement's great.
I got a little thing for you on the movement stuff.
And then we're going to get into targeting and we're going to talk forehands.
Here's the thing with you.
You need to dominate with your forehand.
We're going to improve your backhand, but you want to be a peak of bounce forehand hunter,
right?
Especially if you love your forehand and you're getting connected to peak.
What that means is we got to have a great forehand and we've got to get more comfortable
in these spaces and blah, blah, blah.
You're going to be, yeah.
Okay.
All right.
Yo, peak team.
If you're enjoying this video and you want even more Coach Michael, tons of Coach Michael,
check out the link in the description.
We're building a community.
It's going to be an awesome place.
It's a place where you can have direct access to me.
I'm going to give you the blueprints for all the strokes step-by-step.
We're going to have special lessons there and more.
I want you part of it.
Now, back to the video.
Ready?
Let's go.
Twice more through.
Yeah, that's it.
Come get it.
Good.
Let's go.
Last time through, I'm going to watch one more thing.
Here we go.
All right.
Awesome.
So, I think you look great.
What I want to do is get into targeting today.
Talk about the forehand.
Really, probably the most important thing for me, when I think about your forehand,
what I've seen so far, and I haven't seen too much, is that when we talked about it,
you're taking all this stuff in the backhand, right?
Yeah.
And so, just as a place of growth, all this is forehands, and all this is going to be
forehands.
So, what's important to us today is we're going to go through some patterns.
We're going to talk about, like you know I talked about in the backhand, the full breadth
of patterns necessary to have kind of like a healthy backhand would be deep cross, being
able to create some angle, line, and then change of direction, and potentially change
of direction there.
Yeah.
That builds up.
Same thing with the forehand.
We've got to be able to go cross, angle, but then we need to really work on this inside-out,
inside-out angle, dominating these two main targets from this space, so that you start
to grow this space.
When I think about you, already what I know about you is that, when it comes to your forehand,
this space is immature.
Yeah.
Right?
Okay.
So, you're going to mature that space.
Okay.
Now, let's talk a little bit about movement here.
If you stand over here.
Okay.
And let's talk a little bit about tops.
Now, you're on board with peak of bounce.
You like it?
I do.
It's awesome, right?
Yeah.
It's something, and I'll tell you this, it's something just to hold on to, especially when
you're playing, when you're in match play, it's like one thing because it's the fundamental
place to play the game.
It's the best place.
You come up here, striking balls instead of waiting here and shaking balls, right?
It's good for your tennis.
But two, when the pressure is on, and the nerves are on, it forces us to go play the
game the right way.
Right?
Because you know when the pressure's on, well, everybody wants to shrink a little bit.
We want to get away a little bit, but top tells us, no, I got to go, I got to go play
that ball at the right place, and when we're not, we go, that wasn't right.
Yeah.
And when the big moments are on, this is what I'm telling kids lately, when the big moments
are on, this is an aside, and I want to tell you this because I do believe this is probably,
outside of peak hunting, the most important habit that you can grow as a student, as a
kid, is this.
When you have the big moments, go for your shots, right?
When the pressure's on, go for your shots, and what I mean by that is when you feel that
tingling of pressure, I want it to be a process, it clicks in your head, wait, this is my chance
to go for it.
Because typically when we feel the tingling of pressure and the tightness, what do we
want to do?
We want to get away.
We want to play a little bit more defensively, right?
It's natural.
It's a flight moment, right?
But we want that tingle now to start telling us, wait, it's time to play, it's time to
go for my shots.
And the way we go for it is we hunt peak of bounce.
The way I'm saying it in my head lately, because I grew up playing defensive my whole life,
I'm like a little weasel out here, and I can be too weasel-y, okay?
And I'm trying to, come on, don't be such a weasel, man.
And what I'm telling myself is this, because I watch like, I listen to like Alkraz and
Sinner talk about it, right?
And I watch the greats talk about it.
In the moments of pressure, some are going to puff up, some are going to puff down.
Yeah.
Mostly the person who puffs up is taking it.
Take that money from the table, I don't know, you know how you gamble, you like to go to
the casino?
Okay, you're going to take that money from that blackjack table, no, okay.
But somebody's going to puff up, somebody's going to puff down.
I like to get to these like little tiny mantras in my head.
So when it's like, the pressure's on, I'm like, it's time to puff up, puff up, puff
up, puff up.
Just telling myself this, when I feel that tingle of pressure, that's the reminder, indicator
was the word I was looking at, that's the indicator, it's time to go for it.
Yeah.
Good.
So we just had a big peak conversation.
Yeah.
I want that habit to grow, because if you, over time, when you feel that pressure, you
go for your shots, it's easier the next time, it's easier the next time, and the next time,
and then you become, you have that mentality that the greats have.
But if you, then it's going to be harder and harder, until you get to my age, and you're
a grown man telling yourself to puff up.
Okay?
So, all right.
Loved what you were doing there.
As we take high peaks here, we're going to teach our hand how to move through more, right?
How you have a little bit of the shapiness.
Yeah.
I want to be conscious of that shapiness, but over time, just, if you take your high
balls at the shoulder, and you take your high peaks, you're going to get it, because we
have to have shapiness on the drop.
Yeah.
Just keep taking your high peaks.
The only thing I'd say that I saw here that I wanted an improvement in initial warm-up,
was the way that you moved to almost every short ball, and the way that you moved to
some of your deep balls.
Your open stance looked beautiful.
What were you doing to your open stance?
Do you know?
What am I doing?
Just running.
Yeah.
Just running.
You got your short ball.
Every short ball you got, what'd you do?
I shuffled.
You shuffled.
Okay.
80% of the deep balls, I gave you.
What'd you do?
Shuffle.
Now, shuffling is not the worst sin.
In a hand feed, it doesn't quite reveal the problems that it actually causes, okay?
And what I like to say is, there's a place right here that I call the bounce circle.
Inside the bounce circle, it's no worries, but outside the bounce circle, what do we
need to be doing?
Running.
You've got to train running, at least, because running's the best movement, and I'm hand
feeding soft balls here that you got to the top on, but a short top right there, maybe
even like three feet more, where you're maybe in defense, and then they shank a ball, then
this is not going to work for you, okay?
What's going to happen?
You're going to be there late, and you're going to be required to get into a shaking
ball, okay?
So, loved your start, but I didn't like the shuffling, okay, as far as training.
Here's how we make sure that we're running to everything.
You've got these lines on your hips, okay, these pelvic lines right here.
If you look at your open stance, where'd your pelvic lines go?
To the peak of bounce.
So, imagine that.
We've got these two lines here, right?
It trapped the peak.
What did that allow you to do?
Pace.
You got your short ball, where'd your pelvic line go?
Here.
Yeah.
But where was the peak?
There.
So, it wasn't trapped, do you understand?
Yeah, yeah.
Now, what are we forced into?
Shuffling.
Peak of bounce.
Now, this is the tough one here on the deep ball.
Because, you know, a little clip-clip here, it makes sense when you get, but I imagine
sometimes on a deep ball, when somebody rounds one quick to you, you're forced into an on-the-rise
ball, right?
And on-the-rise is great, listen, so you need a lot of information here, okay?
On-the-rise is great when we can't retreat to the peak.
If we can't get to the peak, we've got to compress down and take it on the rise.
You see some girls in the WTA, it's like on their freaking knees, okay?
So, that's, there's sometimes a flaw in that.
You look at the best guys in the ATP, they're going to go here, here, and they're going
to play that ball.
Yeah.
The reason you have a difficulty kind of recovering into that space sometimes, it's the same thing.
Where'd your hip lines go?
Here.
Yeah.
Where was the peak?
Here.
Yeah.
So, you got either into a shuffle or you got kind of into a step, like that sort of little
dance move.
The move is this.
Now, this one's easier.
This one's tougher.
The move is this.
Here.
Now, where are my hips?
Now, boom, boom, boom, boom, and I'm pushing out of it.
Understand?
Yeah.
So, let's work on both those balls.
Okay.
Let's just go one ball at a time.
Okay.
Let's do the short ball right now.
All right.
Okay.
Ready.
That's it.
Let's go.
Hips to top.
Now, what's going to feel weird is you might feel like under-rotated on this, right?
So, this is where habit causes problems.
Mm-hmm.
Okay?
Now, I'm going to say one more thing to you.
This is where, like, you need to be coiled up like this for your short forehand, and
then you go like this, and you're like, I don't feel coiled at all, right?
The truth is you've got to come at it like this.
Okay.
Up body has to be into a deep coil so that you can access it correctly.
Okay.
So, there's some work to be done there.
That's habit, and it's costing you.
Okay?
Okay.
So, we're going to work on it here and see what we can get going.
Another reason this happens, what do I want from you?
Wide.
I want wide and more energetic from the bounce.
Yeah.
If you're that way, guess what?
You're here.
If you're here, I just don't feel like I'm coiling well, right?
Yeah.
So, then I've got to go into a little bit more dramatic rotational setup here to get
the juice that I want.
Yeah.
So, the habit, one, you've built in terms of how you move, but two, it's growing off
of an improvement that needs to be made right there.
Yeah.
Okay.
So, let's get into a wide bounce.
You know what let's do?
Let's do that fake and real because I want you to set the coil up top right now so that
you can feel easier about running into that.
So, set the rotational coil.
Good.
Ready?
I'm going to give you now pace to that.
Good.
Do it again.
Set the rotational coil.
Good.
Now, pace to it.
You're almost going to feel like you're too fast.
Set the rotational coil.
Good.
Now, step to it.
Good.
Now, that's good.
I think you can even get your hips more aligned.
Some people don't.
This is where on the pros you'll see some people do it different.
Some people will do some shuffling into it, but what I say about shuffling is this.
Let's train running, and then when shuffling comes out naturally in point play, beautiful.
But let's train as much running as we can so we teach the body to move as efficiently
into these spaces as possible, and then the shuffling comes out naturally.
Okay?
So, set the rotation.
Here we go.
Ready?
Let's go.
Go pace to it.
Good.
Now, think about hips to top as the answer.
Set the rotation.
Hips to top.
Good.
Let's go.
Set the rotation.
Hips to top.
Now, it's still shuffly.
Do you feel it?
Yeah.
It's okay.
Good.
Yeah.
You're going to have to work on this.
This is going to be, like, you know, what's so cool is that your coach wanted you to come
to me.
Right?
So, you, we're all on the same team.
Yeah.
So, you're going to go home and work on this.
Yeah.
Watch me.
Watch me handle this ball.
Boom.
You see it?
Yeah.
Practice it without a ball.
Hey, guys.
It's Coach Michael.
Hope you're enjoying this video.
Thanks for being here.
Love you.
Got a special offer for you.
We are building a community.
It's going to be an awesome place.
It's a place you can have direct access to me.
I'm going to have the blueprints for all the strokes, step by step.
We're going to have special lessons there.
Check out the link in the description.
Do it.
And hope to see you there.
All right.
Let's get back to the video.
So, set the rotation.
Yeah.
Run.
Yeah.
That's it.
Don't get that.
Don't get the hips.
Just pace.
And you can go, if you, if you're more comfortable from ready, actually do it this way.
Do it this way.
Step.
There you go.
Yeah.
Do a bunch of those.
Yeah.
You can see how you want to cork it a little bit more.
Keep going.
Come on.
Keep going.
So, this is a little bit like a, a little bit of a virus in your movement.
Okay.
So, you're going to have to, you're going to, we're going to work on it a little bit,
but again, I want to, if you were here every week, we just could spend the whole day on
this.
Yeah.
But we got to, we got to get into everything.
Yeah.
Okay.
So, let's see if we can get into this a little bit.
You understand it, right?
Yeah.
Okay.
And then if I were you, I'd be at home.
Somebody's, you're on the court by, okay.
You're so dedicated to this.
You're on the court by yourself.
Boom.
Just feel it.
And then somebody feeds you a ball.
Why don't we do one like that where you fake it without a ball and then I'll give you a
ball.
All right.
Okay.
Beautiful.
Now, let's set it up and do it.
Top.
Yes.
You almost ran past it.
Yeah.
Did you see how you almost ran past it?
Yeah.
Because you're a fast person who can run.
You're a human.
So, it's like, you're like, oh crap.
I can't go.
Do it again.
Set.
Now, practice it once.
Great.
Now, set it up once.
Now, don't go.
Don't go until you see the top because I want you to connect your hips to the top.
Ready?
No, no.
Wait for the top, though.
Because you don't know where the top's going to be.
So, set the rotation.
Go top it.
Beautiful.
No, that was good.
Here we go.
Do it again.
Set the rotation.
Fake it.
Good.
Let's go.
Set the rotation.
Now, let's go for it.
Go top it.
Awesome.
Feeling it?
Yeah.
Let's go a couple more.
Okay.
Those are cool.
Set the rotation.
Go for it.
Beautiful.
Okay.
Now, let's go for it.
Set the rotation.
Go top it.
Yeah.
You almost, you just don't know, like, it's awkward for you to load into it because you
never have.
But it looks great.
And it's just the way that, it feels good, right?
It's just like, it does feel good?
Yeah, it does.
It's just smooth, right?
Yeah.
Why spend our, I don't, you know, unless you get jammed up in this space.
In this space, it makes sense.
But for somebody like you, looking to get more energetic and looking to get more efficient,
and maybe you're not going to be the tallest person in the world, okay?
Trust me, I've been there.
We got to be fast, and we got to be efficient, and there's no reason to move inefficiently.
Okay.
Let's do the one now where you preset it, I throw you the ball, and then you go from
ready position and you do it, okay?
Okay.
So go ahead, preset it.
Find your top.
Awesome.
Now, go from ready position and go.
Not bad.
Let's go.
Preset it.
Let's go get it.
Oh, yeah.
I love that.
That's so good.
Let's go.
Now, set it.
Good.
You like it?
Yeah, I do.
I like it, too.
What this is going to require of you, if you want this, one, train it with your guy.
He's going to train it.
Two, you can't do it from here, because you see, it requires masterful coiling.
It requires high-level coiling that starts with a base that allows for hip pacing, but
up top coiling, and then striking.
Okay.
Let's try it on the deep ball.
So the message now still comes back to wider base, more energy.
Yeah.
Same message you got yesterday.
Practice it on the deep ball now without me.
Okay.
Practice the deep ball.
Ooh.
Close.
Yeah.
Don't make that first back move.
Perfect.
Okay.
Let's go ahead and preset it.
Preset it.
Good.
Go back.
Good.
Now, it worked so good that you ran too far.
Yeah.
You're like, you can run.
You just almost got to Jason and ran into the fence.
You don't have to go that far.
How far do you have to go?
Just as far as the peak tells you to go?
Okay.
Set the rotation.
Good.
Let's go.
Beautiful.
Do it again.
Come on.
Set the rotation.
Pace back to it.
Good.
Wait for the delivery of the toss.
Okay.
Ready.
Set the rotation.
Good.
That's it.
Still, you're going back one tad too much.
But set the rotation.
Great.
Do it again.
Set the rotation.
Awesome.
How's those feel?
Those feel good.
Yeah.
Maybe a little bit more awkward, but still, they're good.
Okay.
Do a couple more.
We'll do one where you set it up and then one where you come out of split step.
Okay.
So, set the rotation.
Good.
So, you're pacing back.
What I'll say on this drill is you're just leaving early.
So, because you're anxious to do this, which shows the level of a student you are, right
before I deliver the ball, you start to move, so you're moving to a place that doesn't exist
and the ball goes to a different place and then you're having to make a little adjustment
at the end.
You've got to see.
You've got to wait and see.
You've got to let top tell you where to go.
Okay.
So, set the rotation.
Listen to top.
There you go.
Boom.
Let's go.
Set the rotation.
Listen to top.
Wonderful.
Now, let's go do it again and then let's do one from a split step.
Ready?
Push back.
Awesome.
Now, get ready.
Good.
Now, awesome.
We're going to get into targets a little bit.
One target, because we have stuff to do today and I want to spend a bunch of time on this,
one target we might not talk that much about is what do we do when we go back here because
you probably are taking most of those balls on the rise.
I don't mind some on the rise.
I don't mind some on the rise when we can't recover fast enough and also if they're like
at the shoe.
That's good on the rise.
What we don't want is that this ball on the rise, as little as possible, we want to take
that ball that's rising underneath our waist on the rise.
That's the one that creates errors.
We take that when we're forced into it, when we can't make that recovery back.
Let's say we can move back and we get to ... What's the play here?
High, deep.
Yeah, I'd say heavy to the middle.
Heavy?
Yeah, heavy to the middle.
Probably a little bit more shape than you're showing me, although I don't mind the penetration.
The problem is if you penetrate, if you go too heavy here, chances are one, you might
hit in the net.
Yeah.
Two, it's going to drop short.
They're going to attack you.
Yeah.
Also, you go so fast that you don't have time to recover here and they're ding, ding, and
they got you.
Yeah.
Okay.
I'll put a little bit more texture on this, a little bit more shape and play it a little
bit more defensively to give yourself a chance to recover.
Okay.
I like that.
Here we go.
Now, go from ready position.
Nope.
Go from ready position.
Yeah.
I got to throw them out, otherwise I can't push you enough.
Yeah.
Do it again.
Set the rotation.
Yes.
Let's go.
Now, from ready position.
Go.
You like it?
I like it.
Yeah.
Okay.
That was strong.
Let's have a little sip of water.
Okay.
And then let's get into some longer feeds where we look at the targets that we need
to work on, but already this, this, and we shouldn't even maybe do this one, but we'll
do this in a little bit, but this is such an important drill because if you can go here
efficiently and you can go here efficiently and you can go here efficiently, then you
have the, you have this whole set of forehands set up.
Yeah.
And so here and here, you need some work.
Okay.
Great job.
In a conversation about targets, okay, just so maybe we're on the same page as far as
targets because we don't have time to hit every target today, but I want to just kind
of make sure that I'll share my view of targets.
Okay.
So if you, you come over here for me.
Okay.
So if we look at, if we look at the three spaces that we just worked in, right, we just
worked in an attack zone.
Okay.
We just worked in like a neutral open stand zone and then we worked back here in a defensive
zone.
Yeah.
Okay.
Here are the targets that I think you should be working in each space.
When you, and here's a question for you, when you get up into the attack zone, what's your
targeting?
Because this is a very important zone, by the way, especially if you're looking to take
those level, level, levels up, right?
And you eventually want to go to the highest level, right?
You got to be able to take your short tops and go do damage.
Yeah.
And the way that we do damage is very important.
Okay.
So when you come up in this space, what would you say is your targeting approach?
Probably to their backhand.
Great.
Just to the backhand.
I mean, do you have a, do you have targets in mind when you practice?
I mean, I like to the backhand if their backhand is the weak side.
I really, it really depends on where the person is.
I agree.
I mean, yes, but let's imagine there is no person.
Okay.
What is the targeting system that you would practice?
Okay, cool.
So let's break it in.
Okay.
So what I think is this, and we'll go, we'll go point to point.
When you're here in defense, our job is to get it high and deep.
The better you get, maybe the less high it gets, it gets a little bit more penetrating,
right?
But it is to get it high and deep.
And you can even say to the middle, although you can bend it a little bit, it just depends
on what you're doing.
But let's say as a, as a basic, we want to go high, deep to the middle.
Yeah.
Man, I'm on it.
Okay.
We catch those?
Better.
Best shot I've hit in a while.
I call that the reset button.
Hit the reset.
You know, when you're playing like Pac-Man and you know, when all the kids are playing
Pac-Man and they got, you got to hit the reset.
Okay.
So that, I guess that doesn't happen anymore, but we want to hit the reset button.
Yeah.
And we want to, I don't know that it was a reset button in Pac-Man, but we want to start
it over.
It's like this.
Hey, guess what?
I don't like this.
Neutral.
Reset.
Let's do something different.
Yeah.
Okay.
Now, when we're in this neutral zone here, okay, our job, you see those points that I
put out?
Yeah.
And I'm actually going to evolve those eventually, so I got a little idea in my mind, but let's
stay with this.
Okay.
Ready?
So our job in this space, if we're out this wide, we can play the angle, although we don't
have to play the angle, but we have the angle.
Yeah.
Okay.
So we have the angle, right?
On this side.
We have the angle.
We have deep cross court.
Imagine that got deep cross court.
Okay?
Okay.
Only videotape the ones that go, do they say videotape either anymore?
A Pac-Man and videotape.
Okay.
Ready?
And then we've got, of course, deep down the line.
Yeah.
Boom.
Deep down that line.
Yep.
And then if we're over here, we have, now we also have angle this way, right?
Yeah.
When we're over here.
God, I went to my continental because I got tight.
We've got, boom, that ball.
Let's go coach.
Yeah.
Okay.
And of course here, we need to be able to go deep down the line.
Boom.
Got it, baby.
And then we need to be able to go deep cross court.
I wanted to show you that I also make mistakes.
Now, point is, those four are our spots.
Yeah.
Back here, what do we do?
Hit the reset button.
Okay.
Hit the reset button.
Yeah.
Hit the reset button.
Here, we play the four targets.
Yep.
Boing, boing, boing.
Yes.
You want to become, have a great forehand, and we're going to look at this.
Practice on this side, being able to go there, there, there.
No.
Practice then being able to go change of direction between those two, and change of direction
between those two.
So listen again.
You want to have a great forehand, because we're going to send this home with you.
Yeah.
Okay?
Because we don't have time to do everything.
You want to have a great forehand.
On this side, practice going to the green target consistently.
Yep.
Practice out here, going to the yellow target consistently.
Yeah.
Practice right here, going to the green and to the orange changing direction.
Yeah.
Practice right here, going to the yellow and to the orange changing direction.
Maybe even practice going green, yellow, green, you know, but these combinations.
Yeah.
Another one that I like is this, that's important to me.
I'm on the baseline, and I've just, I've got to go orange.
I've got to go orange.
I've got to go orange, and then I've got to go green, green, green.
The two most important targets in tennis, when you're in this space, right there are
green and orange.
Yeah.
Watch Djokovic, watch Sinner.
Watch Sinner.
That's all they're doing.
Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang.
Yeah, sometimes Sinner gets the ball way out there.
He's going to go angle.
Sometimes Djokovic is here.
He's going to go to that angle.
Alcarez is going to play those more.
He's going to make some mistakes on those.
But those two targets are the targets.
Yeah.
We understand.
Yeah.
Now, from this space right here, we have to be able to go orange.
Orange.
Yep.
Red.
Look it.
I like, for the angles, make sure you're practicing them out wide.
I got a student who's been going angle from inside the court and making a lot of mistakes.
And I go, you know what, we got to take that away from that guy.
No names.
Rhymes with cameraman.
Okay.
Now.
Okay.
And we also have to be able to go.
So the patterns on this side that I think you work on are red, orange, and then orange-green,
orange-green, and red-green.
You understand?
Yeah.
These combinations of get good at all the targets and get good at changing directions.
And then also learn to troll the baseline and go to one target.
That orange.
Okay.
Are we on the same page?
Yeah.
All right.
That was a deep dive into how I see the targeting.
When you get up in this space, here's your job.
Take a road.
We've got the right road.
We've got the left road.
Here's the thing.
You're up here.
You're getting aggressive.
You're hunting a peak.
It's going to be up here.
You're carrying energy forward.
Yep.
If you're thinking about individual points, you're going to gag.
If you think about individual, those individual targets, you're going to let the ball drop
and you're going to try to control yourself to those targets.
It's not.
Back here is about depth.
Right here is about depth and direction.
And then up here, it's just direction.
Boom.
Yeah.
I want to work it down these channels.
I want to come up here.
I want to take the left road.
I'm going to miss it sometimes because we've got to go for our shots.
Yeah.
But we want to get it down the left road or the right road.
We want to train that.
It's just about channeling into the corners.
Make sense?
Makes sense.
Okay.
Let's do the work that I wanted, which was you're going to have to get good on this side.
Right?
This is the side that you haven't worked on that much.
Yeah.
Do we agree?
It's important to me.
Again, we map you out and you go home.
Forehand looks cool.
Again, this is the space.
We understand.
This is the space.
So let's play with this space here, this inside out.
Because the reason, again, I say it's the space is your whole life you've been taking
backhands here.
Yeah.
And if you're going to be a top, a peak hunter and a dominator with the forehand, you're
not doing that anymore.
Yeah.
Take a backhand when you have to.
I love your backhand.
But as much as you can get out here and make angles and open the court up, we want it.
As much as you can just be a forehand.
Consider yourself a forehand.
Okay.
So I'm going to give you short balls right now.
And we're going to go ahead and we're going to come up on the short ball and we're going
to take the left road.
Okay.
Okay?
Get in that bounce.
Let's go.
Get in that bounce.
Let's go.
Come get it.
Nice.
Let's go.
Come get that top.
Awesome.
Let's go.
I love it.
Let's go.
That wide bounce.
That's it.
You're in that wide bounce.
Let's go.
But that was actually a bad feed for me because you tried to come up into the space and then
you...
What happened on that last ball?
I got close.
Tight.
Yeah.
Close because you ran over the top.
Yeah.
The top was actually back in more of a neutral space.
Okay.
Great job on this.
Let's go.
Get ready.
Hey, if I'm waiting on you, you know what I'm waiting on?
You get here.
Yeah.
I wait here all day.
I want to see you do it.
You should be able to spend an hour there.
Let's go.
Turn it on.
Let's go.
Come top it.
Let's go.
That's it.
Let's go.
Awesome.
Loved it.
Do the roads help you?
Yeah.
Mentally?
Practice your roads.
You get a short ball.
Get to the top.
We take in a road.
Yeah.
The only time you go middle is when?
No, no, no.
If you're in a short ball.
Oh, for a short ball.
Yeah.
When would you go middle?
Would you ever do it?
I'll just give you the answer.
The pros only go middle when they're assured the guy's going to guess one way or the other.
So don't do it.
You don't have it yet.
Ready.
Let's go down this road now.
Yep.
Ready.
Let's go.
Get around it more.
Let's go.
Get around it.
Yeah.
That's it.
That's beautiful.
Move that ball for me, please.
I love how you're backing around it.
I love this movement here.
A lot of people get caught like in a shuffle.
I think your movement's wonderful.
Come on.
Get in the bounce.
Let's go.
Get around it.
Let's go.
Come on.
That's it.
Let's go.
Push.
Good.
Let's go.
Both those balls you missed.
Yeah.
The first ball you made a mistake.
The second ball's fine.
The second ball you got to the top and you took a swing.
Do it.
That's where we're going to make mistakes.
Yeah.
Trying to knock somebody's head off and missing is great.
I mean, it's fine.
That's where we miss.
The problem was on the ball before, you got around it.
What happened to the ball?
It dropped.
It wasn't your fault, though.
We're not going to get to every top.
But what'd you do?
You treated it like a top.
Yeah.
You striked it.
What happens when we get to the drop?
We shape it.
Shape.
Get to the top.
Strike.
Get to the drop.
Shape.
Yeah.
So the second ball that you got to the top and you striked it and you missed.
Awesome.
The first ball you got to the drop and you striked it.
Mistake.
Got it.
Got it?
Got it.
Let's go.
Yeah, you weren't in the bounce, so you didn't get there.
Let's go.
Turn it on.
Let's go.
Much better.
Let's go.
Turn on the bounce.
Let's go.
That's it.
Let's go.
Way better, though.
Okay.
Good.
You get it?
Yeah.
Okay.
You're going to practice the roads.
You're going to practice those roads.
Now, we should do it here.
From here, we'll do a couple here.
You want to get totally full.
It's like, I'm throwing ball.
I can be over there, by the way.
Your coach can, right?
So from this direction, you're taking roads.
Then from this direction, here.
You're getting around it and you're taking roads.
Then from this direction, you're taking roads.
Then here.
And then we go into it.
You understand?
Yeah.
Every direction.
Learn it.
Okay.
Ready?
Ready.
Let's take the left road now.
Okay.
Ready?
Here we go.
Great movement, too.
I saw that movement on that last one.
That was beautiful.
Just what we worked on.
Wonderful.
You're fast.
You've got to use your speed, though.
Here we go.
Get wide and low.
Now, we go down the other road.
Let's go.
Get in the bounce.
Don't wait on me.
Let's go.
Yeah.
Well, it shows you when you're in a bounce and you move your hips right, you're freaking
fast and you just ran 20 feet past the top.
Yeah.
Okay.
Yeah.
Stop being here and stop being here and you're going to rock it.
Okay.
Let's go.
Just a couple more of that road.
Yeah.
A couple more.
Ready?
Let's go.
Come on.
Top it.
Early to that top, though.
You ran over that top.
Listen to that top.
Get in your bounce.
Come on.
Get on.
Listen to it.
Good.
Let's go.
Listen to it.
Let's go.
Go get it.
Yeah.
You got almost late to it because you got in this move right there.
Let's go.
I'm going to give you another short one here.
Let's move to it right.
Get in the bounce.
Come get it.
Good.
Remember.
That's good.
You're great.
Let's do that last one one more time.
Okay.
You did this.
Here's why you missed that last one.
You go like this.
I need to move my hips to the ball.
But what didn't you do?
Coil.
You didn't.
So then you got there and it's messy.
Yeah.
Here, here, here, here, here.
Boom.
Back.
Let's go.
Come on.
Turn it on.
Let's go.
Turn it on.
Don't wait for me.
Let's go.
Last one.
Let's go.
Go take that road.
Cool.
I think you're wonderful.
You see it all.
You see it?
Yeah.
Great.
It's like some shuffling here and there.
It makes sense.
I don't have a problem.
A little corrective shuffles.
We got it.
It's not just one thing.
But we want to train that.
We want to train what we talked about.
Yeah.
Determine the pacing.
Now you have a better view of the target you want to train.
We got to get really good with this stuff.
Yeah.
Okay.
We got to go a little bit deeper in it.
Let me just see where we're at with time.
Hey guys.
Thanks so much for watching this video.
