We Got Hit by a Car in the Philippines… Then They Blamed Us
We were hit by a car while riding a motorbike in Dumaguete, Philippines. But the nightmare didn’t end at the hospital. We were shocked when the driver later accused us of staging the crash for money.
If you are planning to ride a scooter or motorbike anywhere in the Philippines or Southeast Asia, please watch this. This is the honest reality of what can happen when a medical emergency, travel insurance, and a police station nightmare collide abroad.
🏥 The Travel Insurance That Helped Us
In the Philippines, hospitals often require cash or a credit card upfront before treatment continues. Having the right travel health insurance in your corner can make a huge difference. I’ve used SafetyWing for years and they have never let me down.

🛵 What Happened: The Full Story
This was supposed to be a normal night out in Dumaguete, Philippines, but everything changed when an oncoming car suddenly turned directly across our lane and hit us. Ann and I were thrown from the motorbike. I lost consciousness multiple times, my face was bleeding, and we ended up spending two days in a private hospital dealing with a concussion, bruised ribs, soft-tissue injuries, medical bills, and a shocking amount of confusion.
The driver admitted fault at the scene and signed a police report. But when we arrived at the police station after being discharged from the hospital, everything took an ugly turn.
Instead of taking responsibility, he completely changed his story. He demanded 100,000 pesos for damage to his car, accused us of hitting him on purpose for money, and even claimed I deliberately smashed my own face into his vehicle while unconscious.
After spending two days in the hospital and facing over 70,000 pesos in medical bills, hearing those accusations was a massive reality check.
🇵🇭 A Note on Traveling in the Philippines
This video is absolutely not an attack on the Philippines or the Filipino people. We love this country deeply, and the vast majority of people we meet here are kind, generous, and beautiful souls. But travel is not always stunning beaches, epic waterfalls, and perfect moments.
Sometimes things go horribly wrong, and this is the honest truth of our experience navigating a medical emergency and police situation as foreigners in the Philippines.
⚠️ Crucial Lessons for Scooter & Motorbike Riders
If you are renting a motorbike in the Philippines, traveling through Southeast Asia, or living abroad as an expat, please take this seriously:
-Drive defensively. Even if you follow the law, wear a helmet, and drive carefully, you cannot control what other drivers do.
-Have travel insurance before something happens. Do not assume an accident abroad will be simple, cheap, or easy to handle.
-Understand the local process. Police reports, hospital paperwork, insurance claims, and settlements can become complicated very quickly when you are in another country.
Thank you all so much for the love, support, and messages while we recover. We are bruised, battered, and resting, but we are profoundly grateful it wasn’t worse. We are incredibly lucky to still be here to tell the story.
